T.Rump quote:

"The governors need to do the right thing and allow these very important essential places of faith to open right now--for this weekend," Trump said. "If they don't do it, I will override the governors."

Just so the pubs won't clutch their pearls, I have included a link to the FNC story:

So, how do you think the militia groups with their big guns will react to a POTUS telling states he will override their govenors?
Should it make any difference if they agree with him? (Correct answer is "No")

Seeing reports now he was just talking shit. Now it's just a strong recommendation or something like that.

Behind Trump’s demand to reopen churches: Slipping poll numbers and alarm inside his campaign

https://www.politico.com/news/2020/05/22/trump-churches-evaneglicals-coronavirus-274842

A sudden shift in support for Donald Trump among religious conservatives is triggering alarm bells inside his reelection campaign, where top aides have long banked on expanding the president’s evangelical base as a key part of their strategy for victory this November.

The anxiety over Trump’s standing with the Christian right surfaced after a pair of surveys by reputable outfits earlier this month found waning confidence in the administration’s coronavirus response among key religious groups, with a staggering decline in the president’s favorability among white evangelicals and white Catholics. Both are crucial constituencies that supported Trump by wide margins in 2016 and could sink his reelection prospects if their turnout shrinks this fall.

Sounds like Custer's Last Stand. If he doesn't do it, he will lose in Nov. But his he does it, then the inevitable clusters of Covid community spread emanating from the re-opened churches -- they get sick/die and cant vote?

I am sure there are many moments at 4am that Trump wakes up in cold sweat and wondering why he didn't stay in NYC and continue on hawking crap products or conning people out of their hard-earned cash with new university certifications.

I’m not a church goer, but you can’t tell people they can’t go to church in this country, any church. No matter what the emergency is

That's just complete BS. I'm a practicing Christian. I have ways of availing myself of the resources I need to sustain my personal practice of my religion, online. While I would prefer to meet with my fellow parishioners weekly in person, we are able to make it work in this situation - pretty well in fact. In a way that is sensitive to the needs dictated by this current crisis. Tell me why those you defend are unable to do the same.

At a minimum church going folk need to be aware that churches are a tinderbox for this thing.

Enclosed room
Lots of people
Singing and yelling (which means deeper breaths and more forceful projections)
Longer duration of hanging out in a cesspool of risk.

Just takes one dude who doesn't think he has it but really does to ravish a congregation.

There's a reason why so many outbreaks have happened from church services all over the world.

My guess is most aren't aware of this which came out of contact tracing.

Its like bring disco back to Covid. Ol Skool retro.

In our 1st wave here back in Feb, the bulk of cases comprised of four church clusters. Korea's 1st cluster was due to a church super-spreader.

I never got to thank you for posting the 'Risks, know them-Avoid Them' article because I saw it so late in that thread.

It was extremely insightful so thank you for sharing.

And from all the “states’ rights” republicans, crickets.

Yeah, I wonder what our local Constitutional "expert" pastor thought of T.rump saying he would override governors.

Can you imagine if Obama had said that?

Obama wore a tan suit and once asked for fancy mustard. Republicans lost their collective shit. If Obama had said half the shit Trump says, there would have been cross burnings on the White House lawn.

No but you absolutely CAN tell them they cannot gather in groups larger than X due to public health concerns. Churches if they are smart would have three services Sat and four Sunday.

I'm glad that my family and friends who attend church are not stupid and selfish enough to endanger their lives and the live of others
when safer alternatives exist. They discovered a church cluster in a Church of God in a rural Arkansas town of 25,000 people. The first infections in the entire town were the Pastor and his wife. Some 92 people attended a children's activity at the church in March, 45 were tested and 35 of those were positive. None of the people who were tested were asymptomatic and out of the attendees three members of the Congregation died...

From those original infectees another 26 people in the community who interacted with church members tested positive, and 1 of those died. All of that from an event attended by less than 100 people in rural Arkansas. And people are flaunting health professionals who warn of the dangers of congregating in a crowded sanctuary of a church? How stupid do you have to be to do things this idiotic?

Our president understands this.

In an election year, appealing to church goers which includes evangelicals that make up a high percentage of his base shouldn't come as a surprise.

Our democracy which includes electing presidents does make playing politics even at the expense of health concerns one of the potential downsides of our style of democracy.

Playing politics with public health policy is appalling.

[I must say, that's some badass phrasing. ]

Tragic.

Typical mask wearer. You think you know it all.

Typical non mask wearer, freedom above all. Or masks really don't help. Or mask wearers are know it all socialists. Or mask wearers are living in fear. Or mask wearers fall for media hype. Or mask wearers are the ones preventing people going back to work and getting the economy back on track. Mask wearers want people to look at them as responsible people when they are really uninformed sheep.

I'll keep wearing a mask because I am not a know it all and don't see any harm in not wearing one. Heck it might even help keep me healthy. Who knows.

Hoot, unless you wear a mask 24/7 you haven’t said much. A much better question is when don’t you wear a mask and why not?
