Actually, they don't cost the taxpayers of Great Britain that much, The Sovereign Grant was $86 million in 2019. That's really not a lot of money when you think about what governments toss about in a year.

86 million isn't much? What an interesting comment...The whole lot of them needs to be stripped of their rank, royalties, and powers...What a joke.

Absolutely, why would any working man support a bunch of saps like those people!
That amounts to just over a dollar a year per person. I would guess that the royals generate well more than $86 million a year for the British economy. Do you spend a dollar a year on anything someone else might see as unnecessary?

I had a friend in high school and college who was from the UK. He was born in London, his mom was Welsh. He was for most of that time a socialist if not communist. But he loved the royals. He said we Americans just didn't understand it.

He eventually switched from far left to libertarian/anarchist. He wasn't one to do things in half measures. We no longer hung out much at the time he switched, I don't know if his opinion of the monarchy changed.

But isn't the royal family worth billions? Where did they get all that money?

They earned it just like billionaires around the world earned it, by starting out rich and using that money to continue to acquire more money. Are you advocating for distributing the wealth of the rich despite them earning it legitimately based on the laws in place when they did?

I suppose a discussion on whether the British Monarchy is relevant in the 21st Century could be had, though of course we're not British so who gives a shit, but the whole taxpayer angle isn't much of a talking point. It's basically insignificant.
Plus, if you really want to get technical, none of the sovereign grant comes from taxpayers. Rather, the British government graciously allows the Queen to keep some of the income from the crown estate. Most of it goes straight to the government.

It is my understanding that the British Monarchy really has no significant bearing on the British government other than being a "figure head" so to speak. I'm curious as to why she would speak out at all? I haven't been following the British too closely during this entire affair but why wouldn't their Prime Minister speak instead of her?

I think the entire Monarchy is a joke, I mean really what is she "Queen" of anyway and don't get me started on Harry and Megan, the biggest joke in a while.

The monarch is technically head of state in the UK. That said, her powers are very limited by design. But beyond that, I think you have to be British to understand the importance the monarch holds in their culture. While the Queen is not running the government, she she is very important. Her words and actions hold a lot of weight for Britons. Personally, I can't really relate but I understand this to be true.

The fact that this was only the fourth time in her reign that she spoke directly to her subjects outside of the traditional Christmas address is significant. It goes to show the seriousness of this issue and how important she thought it was to reach out and to encourage and motivate her kingdom to stay the course and to be disciplined and strong.

As far as why she spoke instead of the PM, well I guess he's a bit under the weather.

I'm not a student of the monarchy, but I dd find it a little interesting. The Netflix series is pretty well done. I guess I'd rather live in a world with a little color to it. Why not have a few kings and queens to make the world just a little more interesting? How exactly does that hurt anyone?

I don’t think Americans have much room to talk about any other country’s governing right now. Why exactly are Megan and Harry a joke? Just curious...it appears you don’t have much respect for the monarchy so why would it be a joke that they chose not to participate?

My wife followed all the "Royal" hoopla back in the day, me I could care less they are just a "realty show" that has been around for centuries. I respect the fact the Brits find what she has to say as important, personally I didn't take even five minutes to listen. I can't wait until her "shit show" son takes over, there should be a ton of goofy Netfilx originals and reality TV specials on him and his reign.

Aren’t you a Trump supporter? You should take a trip to oh anywhere in the world and actually talk to people and see what they think about Americans who elected a corrupt reality star. He’s an international laughingstock.

I'll leave this one alone. I do enjoy the interviews from the "basement" riveting stuff I tell ya.
Talk about riveting I bet you eat up that daily shitstorm from the WH every day where all the actual experts hide their faces when Trump spouts his lies. I see someone is filing suit today to keep him from promoting an unproven drug. Can’t wait to find out which of his family members or buddies own stock in it. You know it’s coming.

Last I heard from my wife who use to be a fan of the Monarchy was since the "royal" defectors moved to California they wanted protection from the US? If anyone didn't see Harry marrying Megan wasn't going to go up in flames with the "royals" they just weren't paying attention. My wife was so enthralled in it, she actually got mad at me when I told her they would kick him out of the family for marrying her.

I don't think they chose not to participate so much as they decided they could not longer tolerate the extreme racism being inflicted on Megan. I think Harry decided that his marriage and family were more important to him than his royal legacy. I respect him for that.

I agree with you, Americans need to just shut up for a while when it comes to other countries' forms of government. We're the world's laughing stock right now.

If you say so, not the impression I get form the general voting public but then again I am just one guy. You sound like you have it all figured out, good for you.

Maybe all these countries can then stop looking to America for any help in the future, that would be outstanding don't you think? I mean if we are the "laughing stock" as you say they shouldn't need us for trade, protection or financial support in the future. I'm cool with that.

Why do you think Prince Charles is a "shit show?" Seems you have some deep-seated resentment of the Brits. If you "could care less" then why are you posting about them?

I don't even know how to respond to that. Your post had nothing at all to do with my point.

Oh and Harry is still drawing what 4 million a year from the family, he is such a rebel glad he went out and stood on his own two feet.
