It was the last year for Don Mattingly to make it in with the rules for recent players. Now he joins Gil Hodges as local players that were good, but won't make the hall of fame. Don could make the HOF if he is a successful manager, but Matheny has a better shot at this rate.
His career stats line up well with both 2nd basemen and catchers. A career .281 with 3060 hits, 4 time gold glove, 7 time all-star (2 different positions), seems like a no-brainer to me. His stats are better than Sandberg and Morgan who most would agree belong in Hall.
