I just knew Schlundt as the dude Alford topped and then Cheaney...but I heard a recount of the national title teams and Schlundt was an absolute monster. A beast.
We were on our way to back to back titles (as every starter from the previous year returned, led by Schlundt) but Notre Dame supposedly triple teamed him and we couldn't take advantage. Think we lost by one as there was a very questionable call that sent some Damer to the FT line to win it.
Anyway, Schlundt detroyed our record book and the Big Ten's.
He did it playing about 20 games a year, no three point line and no shot clock.
He did, however go to the line a million times because he was unguardable.
Another way to look at it is Cheaney and Alford averaged around 19 a game. Schlundt was around 24.
Dude was a BEAST.
