Taylor Hawkins dead: Foo Fighters drummer dies at age 50 as band share heartbreak

The Foo Fighters have shared their devastation after the untimely death of their drummer Taylor Hawkins

Foo Fighters drummer Taylor Hawkins has died at the age of 50, his heartbroken band members have announced.

A statement on the band's official Twitter page read: "The Foo Fighters family is devastated by the tragic and untimely loss of our beloved Taylor Hawkins.

"His musical spirit and infectious laughter will live on with all of us forever.

"Our hearts go out to his wife, children and family, and we ask that their privacy be treated with the utmost respect in this unimaginably difficult time."

Local news reports say Taylor was found dead in a hotel room in Bogota, Colombia, where the band had been due to play at a festival.

Reports in Colombia also say police believe Taylor's death could be linked to narcotics and that he'd reportedly complained to hotel staff about having chest pains.

RIP Taylor.

One of the best drummers ever.

He struggled with addiction early in his life. Sorry to hear of his death.

Loved his Chevy Metal stuff too.

Edit: Forgot all about the emergency landing for a medical issue earlier in the year. Wonder if that was for Hawkins?

Terrible to hear. Really loved his drumming. Foo Fighters have always seemed like great guys.

On a side note, what the heck does a timely death look like. Never get the use of untimely.

Still had money and fun shit left to do. A timely death: sentencing hearing; prison; caught in bed; when the money runs out, when you realize crypto isn't real, on and on

Sounds like he had some issues in 2021 too.

And like Dave, one of the nicest guys in rock.

Great guy. Such a tragedy. I remember hearing the story of Dave Grohl wanted Taylor to be Foo Fighters drummer and Taylor almost had a panic attack, because he felt like Dave Grohl was the greatest drummer in R&R. This is even though Taylor was one of the greatest at the time too.

Just a real tragedy that he passed away. RIP, Taylor Hawkins.

Unfortunately, the tox report shows he had those problems in 2022 as well.

Shame such a talent went to waste.

serious question, do you think being under the influence actually helps with talent and success? Look at all of the musicians, particularly in the broader rock and roll category, that have passed away but still enjoyed decades of success?

I’m not advocating that musicians use and abuse drugs, but I just wonder how so many talented ones go through it successfully for so long

And authors. Look at King. He's a genius but the amount he produced is insane. Well he was a coke head.

My two cents: For those shy or afraid of judgment (maybe even from an inner voice), it’s a quick fix to start or continue performing when faced with fear of screwing up. That applies to any creative process, even sitting in your basement writing, painting , or playing a piece of music.

Therapy would be a much better option, IMHO

Untimely, as in unexpected. A person in their 80’s dying of late stage 4 cancer is expected and not untimely.

I have no idea, but i would argue did some talented musicians succeed because of drugs for so long or did drugs end their careers far to soon?

The 27 club comes to mind.

I don't think drugs gives one a "one up" over another musician just because certain drugs are suppose to open minds.

Weird. I was in Seattle the day before it happened and someone gave me the new Dave Grohl book.

as a drummer I was much more upset about losing Neil Peart, but really appreciated the Foo Fighters performance and tribute at the Rock and Roll induction for the Canadian Trio.

Poor soul was full of drugs and meds:

“The report said a urine toxicology test was carried out on Hawkins and 10 substances were found, including THC, tricyclic antidepressants, benzodiazepines and opioids.”
do artists do this shit because they have money and feel invincible and above the law or whatever?

Or do they do it because part of the reason they're such talented artists is because their heads are really Fed up and it's a way to cope?

Or both?

Purely speculation on my part, but my money is that they can afford it and being on the road all the time sucks. You don't get to be around your family, instead you're entertaining other people's families. Staying in hotels all the time, even if nice ones. I hope if it were me I'd stay away from the hard stuff, but when every day & night is the same, substance abuse isn't too big a leap to make. Hell, even not necessarily serious abuse, but daily moderate use will catch up with you after 30 years of it.

No one knows why one person (artists or otherwise) gets in over his head and another one doesn't, but if you talk to drunks/addicts/abusers who have gotten their shit together, they almost universally will tell you it was because "I loved it". It really could be just that simple.
