Stat of the day: returning 5 assists per game

Xavier Johnson averaged over 5 assists per game last season.

The last time Indiana returned a player who averaged 5 or more the previous year?

1981, Isiah Thomas
This stat makes you wonder just how good Yogi was if he couldn’t average 5 or more assists per game.

He avg 4.9 jr year, and did get 5.6 sr year. He was only really good as a sr. IMO. Underachieved first 3 years.
didn't have to do much his frosh year except help break presses, make some FTs, and distribute. He was on the court with four 1000 career point starters. His soph yr team was a dysfunctional CTC mess. His Sr year was one of the better we've seen in the past 25 yrs. Put the team on his back (unfortunate irony is that it probably bought CTC another year in Bloomington, but....beggars can't be choosers...)

if JHS plays like a true 5 star this year, and X plays like he did the final 1/3 of last season, we are going to be tough to beat.

X is so locked in..... You have to remember this guy is the same age as Luka! I expect huge things out of X. He will be a top 5 PG in the country. You just dont see Freshmen be breakout guards that often in the B1G. I hope JHS can hit open threes, not turn it over and be a good facilitator, and play above average D. I dont see him scoring more than 5-6 PPG.

a player returning who had 5 assists per game isn't really a surpising stat, but the last one to do it was Isiah? That's very surprising, bordering on unbelieavable, as we've had some really good assist guys in that span, including most of our career assist leaders I believe: Yogi (career leader based on Wiki... I thought it was Lewis), Lewis, Covey, Guyton, Bailey, Meeks... Hard to believe one of those guys didn't average 5 apg before their senior year. Yogi especially.... are you certain of this stat?

I think X can be the standout PG in the BIG and the country. 16-18 ppg and 7.5 apg if we find a way to play up tempo and get to 80 ppg as a team.

That’s way too many points and assists. I won’t be shocked if his numbers go down from last year. We are a more balanced team.

Too many as in unrealistic perhaps, but hardly undesirable. For my part don't think his numbers go down as I expect him to be at least incrementally better and Team offense significantly so. He and TJD were getting pretty jiggy with the high pick and roll toward last Season's end, Xavier's decision-making was definitely improving and seemed his shot selection as well. If JHS is as advertised, expecting crisper overall ball movement and a lot more inside-outside activity leading breakdowns in coverage/open looks. We'll see...

Premature perhaps, but sweet to see IU on the cusp of something great/memorable just 18 months after Coach Woodson's hiring. No 'honeymoon' required, and no question in my mind that every Player on the Team is one of 'his' guys or doubt about IU being able to go head to head against anyone this year.

Let the reign begin.

I also think people get their POV on assists out of whack, because of the 10 apg threshold in the NBA, but those guys are playing with 20% longer games and a 24 second shot clock vs 30, so they not only have much longer games, but they are putting up way more shots during the games. If you equate it to shots, I would think the equivalent of 10 apg in the NBA would be something below 8 in college; probably closer to 7 than 8. Not a lot of guys average 5 apg in college, as this thread demonstrates.

We should probably have some on court success before we declare “no honeymoon required”.

Assists are also a byproduct of the type of offense the team runs. UNC players because of style of play and how they use a PG will put up higher assist numbers than a team like Wisconsin. .

My "guess" is his stat numbers stay very similar...the hope is he gets them much more efficiently though.

As of now, I think its safe to guess that the overall minutes and/or usage numbers for X, TJD, Race, and Miller will be similar to last year. Miller's minutes might go down a little, but I bet he shoots it just as much overall.

It'll just be how these 4 are used...and then will we get more offensive usage from the remaining minutes from: Tamar, Trey, JHS, Malik, and Jordan...than we did from: Parker, Rob, Trey, Jordan, and Michael.

This years "supporting cast" should be more versatile in the ways they can contribute and make plays. They're definitely more talented. So it isn't too big of a reach to guess that we'll get "more" stats/usage from our 5-9 players than we did last year.

To your point, that will spread things out a little more evenly. But Xavier is going to play 30 minutes, and the ball is going to be in his hands most of that time. This year he has more/better weapons around him...and HOPEFULLY, the offense will be more wide open, which will suit Xavier better as well.

Long winded way of saying I think he'll have similar stats, but better efficiency.

There is no "we", but if you feel Woodson is still needful or deserving of some extra consideration/latitude before he proves himself, then you do. Not my affair even if I find the judgment amusing. I see it otherwise, but willing to reconsider if you can name one person who predicted IU would begin Woodson's second year with two five-star recruits and consensus pre-Season B10 #1 and Top 15 national rankings. Not the same as proving it on the Floor, but know what I saw last year on the Court/Courtside - no one I'd rather see Coaching the Cream & Crimson this Season than Michael Dean Woodson from Indianapolis, Indiana.

Hoosier nation is a “we”. IU alumni are a “we”.

So you had anointed Archie Miller as needing no honeymoon because he landed a top 10 class and had us predicted highly in the Big Ten in his second year?

Woodson absolutely needs to prove it on the court. If we come out and finish 5th or worse in the Big Ten this year, then it will be obvious he is not the guy.

And you speak for both, eh? Not for this fan/alum you don't.

Have never used the term honeymoon in relation to Archie Miller. Quite willing to wager that IU finishes better than fifth in Conference this year. Interested, or is all the devil's advocacy just so much noise?

On court results are all that matters. Woodson has not proven to be successful on the court, YET.

I think we will finish ahead of 5th as well, but I thought we would be better than we were last year and pretty much every year under Archie as well.

See that as wrong on both accounts as well but you do you. My enjoyment of/satisfaction with the Season has already begun and don't need an acid test or approval for its enablement.

He was darn good. IU has desperately missed a point guard of his caliber since he left. Hopefully X can build off of last season which showed some potential.
