Starting QB?

I'm surprised there's no thread. It seemed to me a good case was made for Ramsey.

Ramsey is a field general. Nothing flashy but he put some balls in great spots today. He manages the down and distance well.
Penix throws laser beams. We are in good positions with both. It’s been about 6 years since we had a QB who can run (Tre Roberson).

We've got two kids who we can reasonably expect to win games with. Ramsey is certainly less talented in many ways, but the kid does play hard and smart. Penix is the guy who just oozes talent with his high velocity arm/good mobility.

Penix lacks the experience right now, that's what's holding him back. I expect Penix to come in and play meaningful minutes in a couple of Big Ten games and allow us to win them. I also expect Penix to be the starter next year...maybe later this season. The reason for that is simple, he's the more talented player and once seasoned, he can do things Ramsey can not do.

Buck was talking about how good and complex the BSU defense was before the game. Ramsey pretty much ate them for lunch. Penix struggled a bit. He has a great arm and he could be a great one. He isn't there yet as Ramsey wasn't quite there yet last year.

I have nowhere near the optimism you have for Penix this year. To me he's a poor man's Ramsey. He did not look good to me today at all. Fumbled a snap, and then threw a stupid pass that was tipped and almost picked off.

He also botched the timing on a play-action, and on another play threw way behind Majette, though Majette did do a 360 and make the catch on a swing play.

I'm not saying Penix looks horrible, just that he looks nowhere near as good as Ramsey.

He looked very good against FIU. Ball State's D probably wasn't a good match-up for him at this point in his career.

Mike Fiacable looked better than both of em.

He's my starter against M$U...

And that will hopefully wrap up our "QB controversy".

Ramsey's the starter till he is either injured or plays himself out of the job.

Or until Penix is more proficient than Ramsey.

Ramsey is fine as long as we are in the lead or in a close game. Penix will be the bullpen, or ace we should call upon when the time calls for airing it out, all or most of the game. I'll say it again, he should be our starter against the heavyweights. If I'm calling the shots, Ramsey is the backup vs the big dogs. After today's game of Penix playing, there is no longer the question if he will be redshirted. If that hint didn't give it away, you don't know football.

Ramsey is still my starter, but Penix actually had a higher QB rating in today's game

Penix's day will come but it isn't today. Struggled yesterday and looked flustered,

One thing I've noticed, is Penix throws so damn hard sometimes the receivers arent ready for it. I haven't seen enough of a sample size to know whether he can put some touch on the ball.

Penix will be damn good. We're in a good spot with the QB situation. Need to get some hogs in next years class to have some time to mature so we have a nice line when Penix is a Jr/Sr.

I think he put nice touch on that little flare he threw to Majette for a T.D. down at FIU. That is something Lagow could not seem to do.

Yet on that same play against Ball State, Penix threw a horrible pass to Majette who was forced to do a 360* in order to catch it.

I vote for Johnny Pabst! He's Blue Ribbon!!!

I don't know about that... I happen to think Fiacable has a stronger arm...

//(and now we've created a walk-on backup 3rd string quarterback controversy)//;)

? I didn't know there was a question as to who the starter is. Did I miss something?

Just the usual "everyone loves the backup" cr-p...

All I know for certain (given that I haven't been at practice; nor am I a highly experienced, highly paid, professional coach) is that we have a 3-0 record with Ramsey as the starter. Works for me...

So I didn't miss anything? This is just speculation for...no particular reason?

Yes, that is true. I was just addressing the idea that Penix cannot put touch on the ball. He can. And he can throw a bad ball occasionally.

He started 2 years in high school and threw 61 touchdown passes and 6 interceptions. He also averaged 12 yards per carry.

So he didn't start as a freshman over someone with more experience ? Even though he could throw the ball harder and farther ? His HS coach must have been an idiot. What if he had transferred ? Didn't the guy know that eventually against better competition Penix's laser-rocket arm was going to be their only chance to win ? dws

Find a post where I said Penix should be starting over Ramsey.

Not necessarily aimed at you. Just commenting for the benefit of a couple of others who still are convinced Penix will need to supplant Ramsey once we hit better competition.
