I know this has been discussed and debated, but curious what the board sees as the starting 5 next year. We have two five start freshman coming in. We were devoid of shooting a year ago. A true Achilles heal. I have learned to tamper expectations as we have seen each year the early season hype does not match the end result. Regardless, who is starting and will we finally see an offense that features TJD taking 15 footers with consistency and knocking them down?

I agree with that 5. Tamar and JHS could battle for that spot and there are people who will say JG can't play the 3 but I disagree whole heartedly.

By January I say:

Xavier
Tamar
JHS
Race
TJD

A nasty bench of Geronimo, Malik, Galloway, Kopp, and Gunn. Would love to see Geronimo beat out Race. Healthy competition.

I see a lot of people starting JHS and I just do not see it. He is our only other point guard so unless he starts and plays like 5-7 minutes and comes out so he can rest to be able to replace X around 10-12 minute mark which seems funky to me.

I think it is
X
Bates
Galloway
Race
TJD

I believe Geronimo will play starting minutes at the 3 and 4 off the bench.

Kopp is the wildcard to me. It would be amazing if he could be good and average 12ish ppg but I just don’t see it after last year. I think Galloway takes his spot. He just does everything except shoot the 3 much better than Kopp.

Hood didn’t come to IU to be a bench player. Our guard play was awful last year.

Did Bates? Did Reneau? Gotta beat out the guys in front of you. I personally do not see it. Primarily because we will need him to backup X. You could make it work but it’s not like he is a known shooter/scorer coming in better than our wings. I think he comes off the bench.

I don’t even think he gets starter type minutes unless he proves to be better than Bates, Galloway and Kopp which I do not see either right away. Perhaps by the end of the year.

If he doesn’t then we will be average again. We need much better guard play. Talent ahead of him isn’t that great

It will be interesting if Woody plays with the line up this year. The same starting 5 all year long blew my mind.

Galloway took Stewart's spot before he got hurt.

Otherwise, we really didn't have good replacements for Kopp or Stewart. Their flaws aside, any possible replacements were either ill suited for the position (Geronimo) or had glaring liabilities of their own. New blood and a year's development/competition will hopefully change that picture.

I’m not sure why people still think JG is starting at the 3. He didn’t even start at the 4 all last year. Kopp will start at the three spot.

If we start him again we won’t be any better then we were this year
Laughable. Who do you put in his place that’s proven? JG sure isn’t. Bates isn’t. Not yet at least. JG was terrible at the 3. He was ok at the 4 but not starting level good.

Only 1 is proven. We aren’t playing JHS at the 2. He’s going to play back up point. None of the freshman will start day one. Will JHS play some 2? Probably. TG will start at the 2. Will some of them work their way to starting? Yes.
You play your best 3 guards. We are not good enough for 2 5 stars to be on the bench

Playing and starting is two different things. You start guys who do everything you ask. The most talented don’t always start. In this case that’s what will happen. Kopp will start. At least for awhile. We had 2 five stars sit the bench last year. I’m not sure what you expect. I’m not sure you know.

You play your 3 best guards. Kopp needs to ride the pine. He can’t play, period. Play hood, X bates. Galloway can come in and relieve hood or X.

Galloway was considerably better than Bates last year as it relates to winning a basketball game. So, unless Bates shapeshifts away from current paper tiger his is, then no he should not be playing in front of him.

Yes, I’ve factored in shooting even though Bates can’t really do that either. Yes, I’ve factored in the sophomore leap Bates hopefully takes, but Galloway was a better freshman too.

I wouldn’t be surprised if Galloway has big summer too.

Only thing I ask is that the best players play. Stewart and Kopp starting all year is embarrassing on several levels.

Somebody has to play big minutes in that scenario. I expect X to play 30-35 min. But the other 2 spots? Who plays the most?
Bates and Hood. Galloway and Leal give bench minutes and if you go big you use JG at the 3. The Dukes, Villanova of the world don’t play deep into the bench. They play 7-8 guys.

Hilarious to me that people are pencilling in Bates and a Freshman JHS over Galloway. He would probably bully both of them in a game of one and one. They could develop to be better, but he’s currently just way better than both of them.

He was one of the better players on the team aside from injury. He came in cold and out of shape to help WIN at he end of the year even though he was gassed.

Not sure what world some of you live in. Woody couldn’t even play Bates at the end of the year. I don’t GAF what his ranking was.

I’m asking you who plays the most minutes. I’m still not sold on JG playing consistently at the 3. So who plays what spot? No more than 9 deep. Most likely 8.

Paper tigers until proven otherwise. I do not need to watch Tamars sticky hands dribbling until forcing a bad shot then blowing it on D.

Agree. Kopp and Galloway both start. They just don’t F’up.

Galloway is a nice role player but he can’t shoot period

It doesn’t matter between the 2-3 spot. They are wings. Bates abs Hood plays major minutes…they have to or we are not very good.

One thing Kopp does not do is F up/blow possessions. Plus he’s at least in position on D even though he’s the slowest guy on the court. He rebounds.

All things Bates did show any consistency with.
That’s why I say what I do. Bates and JG are more athleticly talented but god they make bonehead plays. Miss a shot and give up a 3.

Yes it does. JHS isn’t a 3 by any way shape or form. Bates isn’t a 2. Not a good one. He’s more of a 3. You’ve only seen JHS in high school games.

Why can’t they? Take PU for example…our 2-3 vs them would guard Ivey and Stefanivic.

I’m bullish on JHS based on his tape, but I’m about 40/60 on Tamar being the guy people think he is. He shows a lot of traits AAU paper tigers have in common. Over dribbles, can’t guard, doesn’t really rebound, talks a big game. He seems to have a decent attitude and hasn’t acted like a baby yet, so that’s good.

It’s silly to suggest any unproven player “plays major minutes or we’re not very good.” It’s that mindset that makes IU shooting for 5th every year, and the opposite makes Wisconsin win the league.

Our fans don’t always understand hoops. I get that IU needs Bates and JHS to be as good as billed to be like a Kansas. Doesn’t mean they are that good. They have to prove it.

Galloway is a better athlete than Bates. Plus he’s always in position while Bates rarely is.

Remind me of those Bates highlight dunks?? Galloway had several. Galloway mid court steals to trigger runs??? Bates none.

Players are allowed to improve.

Just as Galloway can improve on his 20% TO ratio, which needs drastic improvement by taking better care of the ball. Tamar can improve in areas where he's weak.
