Spring Roster Weights Up

https://iuhoosiers.com/roster.aspx?path=football

James Head 264!
Jonathan King 276
Cam Jones 218 LB? He has to play somewhere
Thomas Allen 245
Madison Norris 206
Coy Cronk 321
Michael Katic 312 already
Gavin McCabe 280
Aidan Rafferty 312
Nick Marozas 300
Matt Bjorson 255
Shamar Jones 284

If accurate I was hoping Madison Norris would have bulked up to at least 220. It will be hard to compete as a DE at 206. At best could be utilized as a situational pass rusher on obvious passing downs. The good news he still has 4 years to add bulk. There is still time given his athletic ability.

It was clear with his frame that 225 or 230 was his upper limit. I was hoping with focusing on football it would give his body time to add weight. Some times it is just takes your body maturing to gain weight. I entered the Marine Corps weighing 150lbs and it took me 3 years to get to 190lbs. I hope his speed and strength is enough to get him on the field and sack QBs this year.

The weight increases should indicate increases in strength and power, if so then the OL and DL should be better than anticipated.

Nice size on the Tight Ends, everybody is north of 250 pounds.
It appears both Bjorson and Ivy have jumped 30 pounds (from their 247 recruiting pages).

I am TOTALLY surprised by the gains made by Cronk & Rafferty. I think Rafferty was about 275 when he was recruited.

Interesting that Jones will play FS but is listed as an LB on the roster.

SEE BELOW:

James Head 264! -Possible year 2 BEAST mode breakout!
Jonathan King 276 -Like more size here!
Cam Jones 218 LB? -Amazed at the talent in DB/S room - could maybe go 1st/2nd team interchangeable!
Thomas Allen 245 -Please say he might go to DE? (Don't think he has the wheels for LB)
Madison Norris 206 - 3rd down rush specialist only? Send that boy to food table for seconds!
Coy Cronk 321 - Still like idea IF Caleb Jones could handle tackle, Cronk could be like a Nelson at G?
Michael Katic 312 - Freshman saying "Hey, I want to be in the mix fellas!"
Gavin McCabe 280 - DT reinforcements anyone?
Aidan Rafferty 312 - 6'6 NOW he's got some beef too
Nick Marozas 300 - More OL beef!
Matt Bjorson 255 - Finally some Iowa/Michigan or Wisconsin like TE size at IU? Utilize them better too?
Shamar Jones 284 - Hagen said when recruiting he was a long-armed, very solid player. Need DL help!

Other jump outs at me:
Brandon Wilson DL - 284 - 5th year senior, let's end strong
Britt Beery 6'6 313 - RS Soph - get him in the rotation
TJ Ivy TE 6'5 256 - See Matt Bjorson above

And none of the above names considers any of the incoming freshman who don't arrive until the fall, of whom I assume 5-7 will be good enough to contribute to playing time next year.

Feel like year 2 of S/C, new coordinators and more experience...let's start getting the right people on the right seats on the bus!

Our O-line will he huge. Getting up to Michigan State/Ohio State type of size. I hope we can pound teams this season.

Did anyone else notice Stepaniak at 321? Road grader size. I love his nasty streak, but walk away when the whistle blows!
I hope the entire OL becomes road graders. The size of the OL will match up well with the B1G and I hope the power and strength they have matches up as well.

Think the three seniors give this room great leadership. They want to end with a bowl year and seem to be setting a great example. But the second year of S/C also seems to be paying off as well. If some of the guys step up as it appears they will, going to be a nice line of big 310+ legit players. If they do their job believe DeBoer has the talent at skill positions to do his.

All makes sense. I know other teams are going through their S/C phase and getting bigger/better as well.

It seems as if our guys had more room for improvement over the past year based on Ballou's statements. That may mean something to our favor.

I just think we will live off the upgrade between our new OC and what Penix and Tuttle (if eligible) can deliver. We will need Ramsey...but the other 2 have more potential as difference makers.

Just wanting that difference to mean a bowl game. So close to establishing IU as an upper level program versus an average one.

Not trying to be too over the top but we could be talking about the names on this team as the ones that finally turned that corner.

Thanks for adding in a comparison. If the weight gain is all muscle with no loss of speed or quickness its all good. I know thats the the goal of our S&C folks. I would like to see Juan Harris play at about 325 instead of his listed 350. More muscle...more quickness...

If Harris goes from 350 to 325 and adds muscle then we are probably looking at a minimum of 40 lbs of fat taken off.

If he is as athletic as people say then that would make him a manster.

While I agree that freakin dude from msu was standing on his calf and twisting his foot into it. BS non call by the ref!!!!
Michigan State is the dirtiest team in the B10. Fact!

I agree completely with you. I wasn't even referring to Step's play against the player who stepped on his leg. Regardless of what the whiny UM fans claim Step did nothing wrong when he blocked him to the ground and covered him.

I referred to the play where Step came in and hit the DB in the back well after the whistle blew on Stevie Scott's 20+ yard run into the red zone. IIRC we ended up with zero points on that drive due to Step's personal foul.

As long as they are not slower. Speed kills in B1G.

I would guess that the Ballou/Rhea strategy is try to maximize speed first, and get to a place were those metrics start to plateau, and use that as a baseline while adding weight. Also, last year, there seemed to be a lot of emphasis on equalizing strength imbalances (left side stronger/faster than the right or vice versa). I would guess that's probably why we are seeing the weight gains appearing to be much bigger this cycle - with speed and balance at a good spot, the focus then switched to mass for a lot of players.

Last season University of Massachusetts had the biggest offensive line in the country averaging over 328 pounds. They had big wins over Duquesne, Charlotte, Connecticut and Liberty on their way to a 4-8 season!
