All of the talk going into this regional was about a showdown between the Vols and So. Miss. IU threw a little monkey wrench into that on day one with a win in which they never were really challenged in the game with the Golden Eagles scoring their runs after IU had already taken a commanding lead in the game.

So. Miss came into the game as one the hottest teams in the country having won 14 for their last 15 games and their starting pitcher, Billy Oldham, considered one of the top pitchers in the regional, who is expected to go fairly high in the draft. IU chased him in the 4th inning.

IU outhit USM 17 to 11, and IU was 17 for 44 for a team average of .386, while USM was 11 for 37 for .297. IU had five multi-hit players with Taylor, Tibbitts and Stadler each having 3 hits, and the bottom of the order came up big by going 6 for 15 on the game.

Tibbitts - 3 for 5 with a double and homer and 4 RBIs.

Colopy - 2 for 5 with a double and homer and 3 RBIs.

Taylor - 3 for 6 with an RBI.

Stadler - 3 for 5 and he scored 2 runs.

Mathison - 2 for 5 with a run scored.

Mitchell - 1 for 2 with two walks and he was hit by a pitch, and scored two runs.

Pyne had a hit with 2 RBIs.

Both teams had one error with an unearned run scoring on both of the errors.
Added: In my 6th inning summary, I had Cerny with the error when it was actually Oliver who committed the error and I corrected that.

The pitching was great with Bothwell and Buhr giving up just a combined 3 earned runs with a 4th run being unearned. It certainly helped IU going forward that they used just two pitchers in the game.

Bothwell (W) - 5.2 IP, 7 hits to include a homer and 2 earned runs, 9 Ks, 2 BBs, and a hit batter.

Buhr (S) - 3.1 IP, 4 hits to include a double and 1 earned run, 2 Ks, and 1 BB.

In other action involving B1G teams, 2-seed Nebraska lost to 3-seed Florida in the Stillwater Regional, 5-2. Sears went 5.0 IP for the Huskers and gave up 10 hits to include 4 doubles and a homer and three earned runs in getting the loss. The Huskers had the bases loaded with one out in the 8th and they failed to score.

Illinois plays Indiana State tonight in the Lexington Regional.

Illinois beat Indiana State in the Lexington Regional, 4-1, and Illinois starter, Jack Crowder, went 8.0 IP and gave up just 3 hits with the lone run given up being a solo homer in the 4th inning. Both of the B1G's 3-seeds won today, with 2-seed Nebraska falling.

As I post this, the Vols lead NKU 7-3 with the Vols batting in the bottom of the 8th, so there will be no upset there barring a 9th inning rally by NKU.

The Vols beat NKU, 9-3, and they added to their lead with a two-out, two-run homer in the bottom of the 8th. The Vols outhit NKU, 9 to 6, and 3 of their 9 hits were homers.

2 walks and 9 Ks is a great performance for Bothwell … I also saw 2 double plays in the box score.
Buhr 1 run in 3 relief innings got it done too.
Bats woke up after going quiet in the last two games of the BTT. Let’s jump on the Vols too.

So. Miss knocked off N. Kentucky, 6-0, in an elimination game and they will play the loser of the Tenn/IU game tomorrow at noon ET.

In other B1G action, as I post this, Nebraska trails Niagara, 4-3, in the 4th inning in an elimination game. Illinois plays Kentucky tonight in a winners bracket game.

In other action of interest, Indiana State stayed alive by beating Western Michigan, 6-4, in an elimination game in the Lexington Regional. Luke Hayden started and went 4.1 IP in a no-decision, and threw 97 pitches while giving up 3 hits and 3 earned runs.

If we can pull off the miracle tonight tomorrow will be a blast to watch. Those top SEC/ACC teams just have so much freaking firepower
