So ND offers one of our commits, Joshua Johnson

Nice to know he is attractive to schools like ND. Hope we keep him. It will stink if ND offers late and walks off with him.

A good prospect will get multiple offers. It's up to him to choose. If the situation fits, he will come to IU.

If only recruiting were that simple. Now, please realize, I am NOT casting aspersions but, U of L basketball shows us that is can be much more complex than, "If the situation fits, he will come to IU." :(

I don't need this information in order to hope ND never wins another game, but on the plus side it tells me we have gotten some pretty good players to commit for 2017. As always it's fairy dust until signing day. It's is unfortunately equally probable that none of the three sign as it is that all three sign.

Recruiting sucks.

In answer to your question...IU, in a perfect world, should not allow committed recruits from another school to visit. Nor should any school. Kids need to learn their word is their bond. Don't give it If you aren't sure...period. However, until all school play above board, IU has no choice but to wallow in the mud with the rest. A sad time...

This is how it's always been. These are the rules, signing day isn't until next Februaury so everyone is fair game until then. I don't see anything wrong with that. The sadness is the stuff you see(or don't see)at Ole Miss recently & others breaking the rules. Bringing in a fall signing day as CKW has talked about would eliminate some of what you're talking about, but it's just the way the game is played.

I'm still pissed about that fake punt Holtz pulled off when the game was out of reach in 1991.

I don't think it's a big deal. I'm ok with the poaching thing. It's not bad manners on either end like it was back in the day and it's a known dynamic on all sides. The modern coaching carousel environment means lots of new developments and moving pieces so players should have that right. Until the NCAA changes the rules to find a way to allow students to sign instead of verbal, then it's just going to be like this forever.

With that said, I think this 4 star athlete sees our RB's being so productive and wants in on that hot action. I don't blame him. I think he'll stay a commit with IU.

Just saw the "Flip coming?" on the home page.

I guess the kid just really wants to play football in the great state of Indiana.

Of course, if we are to believe the broadcasters/fans of ND, EVERYONE wants to play there. It must be an unbelievable letdown to have to play for any other program but the Irish. So much so that they shouldn't play any other place because their hearts wouldn't be in it. If we believe that BS about all players being fans of ND then that makes it more amazing that they aren't going for their 100th straight championship! Must be because of bad officials calls, weather working against them, injuries ravaging their team (see every bowl game they play) or just plain running out of time!

Several of you have reasonable, realistic views of poaching. Perhaps the only one that adds up to me is the short status of coaches. But that should speak more about transfers of existing players more than incoming freshmen. Competition from other teams for freshmen is normal. Perhaps the problem would be solved is that no prospective player can committ to a school until signing day. After that the NCAA should allow changes only in the event of special circumstances like a sudden coaching change. But make it hard to do. Players are not like regular student. They receive free benefits galore and should be obligated to their contract like anyone else. Situations arise where the fit just proves bad. Let the NCAA handle it one case at a time.

In a time where in many states at 18 you can vote, drink, smoke pot, and die for your country, What's so hard about learning that your word is your most valuable possession, and that once given you must stand behind it, no matter how things eventually work out. A promise has,no caveats imo.

Yeah, I know...I'm dreaming...Vbg.

I just don't understand what harm would be done in having signing day in December. The high school seasons would be finished by then and nothing more could be accomplished on the recruiting front. It would cut down on poaching for at least a month or so.

I think the top schools like it just the way it is. They can sit back and cherry pick once they've had time to see all the prospects. An early signing day would help imo. And I would do it early as possible and make it iron clad. Kids should not be picking schools based on just sports. Their education should be first prioity. I'm not sure I like what we call recruiting today anyway. A charismatic coach and glory dreams lead to bad decisions every day. Not sure coaches should even be allowed contact with prospects...ever. If the kid comes to visit, fine, but they should come for their own reasons, not because they were pressured or talked into it.

Of course...I'm getting a bit old. Vbg...

I agree with you on that. It happens all the time that a good player goes to a high-level program and just sits for his entire career, or maybe realizes after a couple of years that he isn't good enough to play at that program and then has to find another place. And if he would have gone to lower program he would have had a good chance to play right away. I guess I can't blame a player if he is told by the recruiter that he is terrific and then he thinks he can play, but then finds he is over-matched once he arrives on campus.

Wow it would be a real mess if no one could commit until signing day. At least as it is the coaches have most of the kids committed sticking so you have a fairly good idea what you have and where you need to concentrate your efforts towards the end. If no one was allowed to commit then the last few weeks would be a crap shoot and you would have no idea what you are going to end up with.

Well, yes and no. Fact is if kids had to commit early, and had to stick to it, seems to me coaches would have a far better idea what he going to get than he does now with all the last minute poaching that goes on right before signing day. The longer big programs have to analyze the kids your getting, the more time they have to use your footwork to their advantage. Just not happy at all with current system. Not certain what the cure is.
