So looks like Wisconsin is voting tomorrow

The Wisconsin Supreme Court voted along party lines to overrule the governor’s ruling to postpone until June. Then the US Supreme Court ruled, again 5-4 , no surprise that Wisconsin could not extend absentee voting. We really want to make sure everyone in the country has the right to vote, don’t we?https://thehill.com/homenews/campai...urt-blocks-governors-effort-to-delay-election

It is crazy to think there is no escape for a pandemic. And why are the Republicans demanding people line up and infect each other.

Meanwhile, Texas is a state that requires one to have a reason to vote by mail. Inability to physically vote in person is one of the criteria. For the general election, the Democrats have filed suit to get the courts to find that a pandemic counts as being a reason one cannot physically vote in person. Guess what other major party is opposing that lawsuit?

didn’t two of the hot spot states (IL and FL) carry on with voting despite the obvious stupidity of doing so?

Wouldn’t surprise me that Wisconsin follow suit even later, given my historical interactions with people there.

Neither Florida nor Illinois were underv"stay at home orders" on election day, Wisconsin is. In addition, learning from mistakes should be encouraged.

yes but they both had increasing reported cases already, particularly in Chicagoland.

But you do not see a disconnect between ordering people to stay at home, and telling them to go out and vote.

The GOP has a 5-2 lead in state Supreme Court justices. One is being elected today, it could go to 4-3. Anyone doubt that is why the state legislatures refused to consider postponing?

I’ll give you an even more morbid thought, the conservative judges want the democratic primary to go on and voters to be infected and affected for political gain

The vast Majority of Republican voters live out in the boondocks, far from the madding virus. Far at least for now.

Leave it to republicans.
If the field is level and the rules fair they will lose and lose big. The only thing they can do (since apparently they have no ideas of value) is to game the system by disenfranchising voters. Whether it's by gerrymandering, removing voters from the rolls, closing polling places and now with a novel twist making it dangerous to vote.

Saw there were five voting places open for all of Milwaukee, down from the normal fifty. This is really repugnant and reckless.

Google Robin Vos. He is the speaker of the Wisconsin Assembly and opposed moving the election. He is decked out in full PPE, gown face guard, mask, visiting a polling site and telling people it is safe.

Goat or anyone... on what basis did the SCOTUS rule that the absentee ballots could not be extended?

It's hard to say, because it was a very poorly justified decision. They keep stressing two things:

1. The plaintiffs did not originally request the particular relief of extending the postmark deadline; and
2. That's totally not the reason we are saying no, we swear.

Ultimately, they say it "fundamentally changes the nature of the election," but they can't really explain why other than to repeat that the relief granted by the district court was never actually asked for by the plaintiffs, so despite their protests to the contrary, I guess that's really the basis they relied on.

It appears RBG was harsh on her dissent. My suspicion is the court will uphold Texas' abortion ban because of the emergency situation. And frankly, except for life of mother, I probably agree with that. But if an emergency can override the right to abortion it should also override the election until it can be done safely or by mail.

In 2018 Democrats Democrats won the popular vote by 180k votes, meanwhile the Republicans won 64 of 96 Representatives for the Wisconsin House. Gerrymandering at its best.
No wonder this fiasco took place

Liberal Challenger Defeats Conservative Incumbent in Wisconsin Supreme Court Race

https://slate.com/news-and-politics/2020/04/jill-karofsky-wisconsin-supreme-court.html?via=taps_top

Jill Karofsky, a liberal judge running for the Wisconsin Supreme Court, has defeated Daniel Kelly, the conservative incumbent, according to results from the April 7 election that were released Monday afternoon. Karofsky’s victory narrows the court’s conservative bloc to a 4–3 majority, putting progressives in striking distance of flipping the powerful court. It may also force Republicans to reconsider their position on absentee voting during the coronavirus pandemic. Wisconsin Republicans sought to exploit COVID-19 to suppress Democratic votes, forcing citizens to risk their health to stand in line for hours at a handful of polling places or surrender their right to vote. Donald Trump and his allies appeared to be eyeing a similar strategy for November. But in Wisconsin, at least, that strategy seems to have backfired.
