3rd inning:
T3rd:

Rybarczk faced the 9 thru 2 hitters and he Kd the leadoff hitter. A ball that didn't look to be hit that hard just cleared the LF wall for a one-out solo homer.

Rybarczk then gave up a no-doubt solo homer to LF to make it 9-3 IU with one out.

Rybarczk then gave up a single for the third consecutive hit and he is not long for this game with there being one out.

Rybarczk then gave up another homer which again was to LF for two more runs and that was it for Rybarczk as Rutgers was teeing off on him.

IU brought in RHP Aydan Decker-Petty with an ERA of 7.64 in 17.2 IP and a WHIP of 1.93, and he faced the No. 5 hitter. D-P got a flyout for the 2nd out. A groundout to D-P retired the side with a comfortable lead not so comfortable right now.

With the 9 thru 2 hitters up for IU, Rutgers went to the bullpen again and brought in RHP Jake Marshall with an ERA of 7.13 in 35.1 IP and a WHIP of 1.59.

6th inning:

T6th:

D-P faced the middle of the order and the leadoff batter reached on a throwing error on Pyne which pulled Brenczewski off the bag.

A grounder got the first out with the runner at 1st moving to 2nd. The runner on 2nd stole 3rd with one out.

A grounder got the 2nd out with a run scored which was unearned, and the error and stolen base cost IU.

D-P then hit a batter to put a runner on with two outs. Another error in the inning with a bad pickoff throw by D-P moved the runner to 2nd. A groundout retired the side.

B6th:

It's the 3 thru 5 hitters up with Mitchell leading off. Mitchell got a leadoff standup double.

A WP moved Mitchell to 3rd and no outs. Cerny walked on a full count to put runners on the corners with no outs and Brenczewski up.

Rutgers went to the bullpen and brought in LHP Joey DeChiaro with an ERA of 2.35 in 15.1 IP and a WHIP of 1.50.

Brenczewski singled to score Mitchell to make it 11-6 IU with runners on the corners with no outs and Burckel pinch hitted for Stadler. We will see the Schuyler behind the plate in the 7th.

Cerny scored on a suicide sqeeze play with Burckel reaching 1st on the bunt, and runners at 1st and 2nd and no outs.

Sefcik walked on four pitches to load the bases with no outs and Mathison up. There was some kind of injury problem with DeChiaro and he had to leave the game with Rutgers bringing in RHP Gavin Stellpflug with an ERA of 8.22 in 7.2 IP and a WHIP of 2.09.

Mathison had a 2-0 count when the new pitcher came in and he walked on a 3-1 count to score

D-P was back out there to face the 9 thru 2 hitters and with it being a Sunday travel day, the 10-run rule was in effect and this could be the end of the game.

D-P got the leadoff hitter on a grounder and we were at the top of the order. A flyout to the wall in CF was caught by Mathison for the 2nd out. A grounder ended the game with D-P putting them down in order.

Final: IU 18 Rutgers 6

Ok, I give up. Where has THIS team been all season??? What an absolute butt-kicking of those jokers from NJ!!

🧹🧹🧹 Rutgers had a higher RPI and impressive nonconference schedule performance.
Getting the sweep was big.

Maryland won the split series v. Illinois in College Park.

Let’s hope the Wildcats find a way to knock off the Boilers this PM.

IU now has 25 wins for the season.

It was IU's second series sweep of the season with Baylor being the other, and IU's first in the conference after three straight series wins. It was a wild 2nd and 3rd inning and it looked like a home run derby with IU hitting 3 homers in the B2nd and Rutgers hitting 3 homers in the T3rd. Seventeen of IU's 18 runs came in two innings (2nd and 6th), and IU outhit Rutgers 12 to 5 with 8 of IU's hits being for extra bases to include 3 doubles and 5 homers. IU was 12 for 29 for a team average of .414, while Rutgers was 5 for 25 for .200.

Cerny - 2 for 4 and a GS homer for 4 RBIs.

Mitchell - 2 for 3 with a double and homer and 3 RBIs.

Mathison - 1 for 3 with a homer and 3 RBIs.

Sefcik - 1 for 2 with a homer and 2 RBIs.

Taylor - 2 for 4 with a double and homer and an RBI.

Brenczewski - 2 for 4 with an RBI.

Burckel also had a pinch hit RBI with Stadler contributing a double.

IU added two more errors to the season total with one error contributing to an unearned run, while Rutgers had no errors.

The pitching was strikingly similar to yesterday's game when IU also used just two pitchers like today. Yesterday, Bothwell ran into problems in the 4 and 5th innings with Buhr coming in to pitch 5 innings without being charged with a run. Today, Rybarcyk ran into all kinds of problems in the 3rd with Decker-Petty coming in to pitch 4.2 IP and not being charged with an earned run with only an unearned run scored because of an error.

IU used just seven pitchers total over the three-game series, and with no midweek game next week leading up to the Purdue series, we will have several pitchers with a lot of downtime between appearances.

Rybarcyk - 2.1 IP, 5 hits to include 3 homers and 5 earned runs, 2 Ks, and 2 BBs.

Decker-Petty - 4.2 IP, no hits or earned runs with an unearned run scored, 2 Ks, no BBs, and a hit batter.

Perhaps an intra squad scrimmage is in order, say Tuesday, to give a number of pitchers say 3 or 4 batters.
Put runners on base and practice situations. Keep the backup catchers sharp too.
Decker-Petty - 4.2 IP, no hits or earned runs with an unearned run scored, 2 Ks, no BBs, and a hit batter.
Yes Decker Petty had a good game. Helped himself on defense a couple times.
After the early innings home run derby, He had a mini pitcher’s dual …
Until IU broke the game open to threaten the 10-run rule.
It was good to see the game on BTN.
