After 41-0, they’re officially “rutge.” Gotta earn the r and s.
I'm not condoning this misconduct but, frankly, I think it pales in comparison to some of the other stuff that's been happening around the conference.
Too many of the adults in the Big 10 have set a very low bar for what is good conduct.I'm not condoning this misconduct but, frankly, I think it pales in comparison to some of the other stuff that's been happening around the conference.

Holy sheet, its been a bad year or so for the Big 10........
As far as RU bringing down the BT, the reality is that RU was sure to fail for the first 10 years or so in this conference. When they were brought in, they had the smallest budget, next to MD the most debt, and by far the worst facilities and coaches (program wide) in the Big 10. And they wouldn't get a full slice of BT $ until 7 or so years in so it was only going to get worse for awhile. Really about the only sport they had a chance to be competitive in was football, and their last coach screwed that up.
So when someone says, "Man, Rutgers really sucks in (name the sport), remember that that was absolutely the expectation. Blame the cynical Delany and the ADs, not the people at RU.
When the Hoosiers beat Rutgers they were without two starters. Let’s not forget the biggest win of the year was against a Norte Dame team that did not make the NCAA tournament. McSwain and McRoberts were starting forwards and the guards were a pair of underachieving seniors. IU football was a lot more fun to watch last season. I think both will be a lot more fun to watch this year. Back to football.More embarrassing was the loss to Rutgers in last years BIG tournament. What a steaming pile of a game that was! How do you lose a game like that where we blew them away at their place a couple weeks prior? That was the icing on the cake for last year’s basketball season. Just awful. Bad coaching too.

It’s in New Jersey. Sorry Bruce.but a total head scratcher why they haven't been better all along.
they have a state with a population significantly larger than Indiana all to themselves, with another 10 mil right next door with no other even semi major program any closer than UConn, and not much else within a couple hundred miles to compete against either for recruits.
they should have been great in fball and bball for decades.
Historically, Rutgers has a fairly pestigious reputation as an academic institution particularly research-based. Their admission standards aren’t exactly light. They might even have more undergrads than IU. I think they are close to 50k undergrads. You beat me to it. It is NJ

yes, nothing hurts recruiting more than a huge home recruiting base. (and those other schools ruled at one time). From a historical perspective, this probably hurts them more than anything. Without semi major programs in close proximity, they didn't have quality opponents to raise their profile. Looking back over their historical schedules, and you are predominantly seeing the likes of NYU, Lehigh, Bucknell, Colgate, Delaware. The highlights of their schedule were the occasional Ivy League school, and this was the case up until the late 70s
Different sites have different numbers. The school itself lists 67K total for all three campuses. New Brunswick/Piscataway (main) has around 46K on campus. The Newark Campus has about 15K, and Camden has just under 6KI think that number is all three campuses. I number I found for their main campus is 36k.
Also have major professional sports teams competing for fans interest & money.yes, nothing hurts recruiting more than a huge home recruiting base. (and those other schools ruled at one time).
while they may have played lesser competition until the late 70s, they should have dominated lesser competition all the more.
and what's the excuse since the late 70s?
just saying, how many other schools have the geographical recruiting base advantage that Rutgers has.
OSU, UCLA, USC, UT, UF, Miami, FSU, (and ND as the nation's home Catholic school).
any state with a decent population that has the state all to itself should do quite well, as there aren't that many schools that do. (OSU, RU, UW, Mizzou, Minn, UMd, who else?) (to a lessor degree, PSU, UGA, Illinois, Washington, who have another big 5 program in state, but one that will never be on even terms).
when you have a high population state all to yourself, and another huge population base right across the river, with no other major programs even close in proximity, how can you have not done better historically?
