My favorite of all time.
Unforgiven, Hoosiers, Firm, Mississippi Burning, etc....the best.
Superman, French Connection, Bridge Too Far, dude was around a long time and was a Marine I just learned!
I wore Superman 1 out as a kid. All of them actually, but Superman 1 was special to me.
I spent some time with the guy who runs The Hoosier Gym in Knightstown & he said both Hackman and Hopper were awesome during the filming of Hoosiers. They socialized with crew and were very cool (unlike the leading lady in the film).
Underrated actor. He was believable in so many different roles. I'm glad he got the lead in Hoosiers instead of Jack Nicholson.

He was pretty widely considered one of the best of his generation. Two Oscars, etc.
Sad news. If anything, a greatly underrated actor who could seemingly play any part. He was even great doing comedy, as he did in Young Frankenstein (the blind hermit Lol!) and his part in The Birdcage. RIP

Kinda interesting during filming he thought Hoosiers was going poorly and the movie would wreck his career. Then it did just the opposite. He was perfectly cast in that movie.

Underrated by his peers, not us. I liked everything he did.
I remember reading details about Young Frankenstein and I believe he did the role for "free" if that's possible.
Lex Luthor was fantastic too.
His portrayal of the conflicted attorney in The Firm was perfecto.
But he will always be Little Bill to me. Unforgiven is like Jaws: the perfect movie. There's not many IMHO.
I try and watch Hoosiers at the beginning and end of every season. Might move it up this year to this weekend remembering Coach Dale. Thanks Coach, for one of the best sports movies and characters of all time!
PS, Hickory High was Ninevah High (now long demolished) about 45 minutes south of Indy. My Mom graduated a mighty Ninevah Bluebird, and she cried during the opening scene when Coach Dale walks into the school and is looking over the trophy case. A more special movie for me because of that.

yeah we used to drive by it quite a bit heading down to Lake Cordry/Sweetwater back in the 80s. it was a landmark.
His peers are the ones who vote for acting Oscars. He was nominated by his peers 5 times, and won it twice.

Michael Rooker said he was wearing a cup, but Hackman went for it and Rooker could feel the cup starting to crack. Gene was a big dude, former US Marine. Rooker said they did the scene in just one take, fortunately, because the pain he was showing was not acting.
Frank's big mistake....don't ever lay hands on an Federal Agent. Not ever going to end well for you.

Are those considered "Princess Lakes"? I remember my Mom mentioning all those names as the area she grew up in. Wish I'd taken her down there when we were still both in IN.
yep, asked the question because everyone knew the answer, and he knew none of them had the balls/stupidity to say those three little letters with him in the room.
The first time the movie was on TV I taped it with the tape recorder. This was before VCRs.I would close my eyes and reenact the scenes as I was listening to the audio.
actually this is my favorite scene. two of the best ever....can't confirm if the slap was real (for Dafoe's sake, I hope not, because Gene really nailed him). Hackman never really seemed like he was 'acting'. He was the perfect "everyman"....sans the Lex Luther role which was also awesome, as he was the only real comic relief in Sup 1 and 2 (I don't acknowledge the other 2 movies, they were just that bad).

favorite line was when Lex was watching Otis walk through the train tunnels on camera, on his way to Lex's underground lair.....Lex says something like "amazing that his brain can generate enough power to move that body".
Learned something new today: I always thought she was saying "Princess Lakes" but it's "Princes Lake". Guess I can start drinking now!
His magic being he could just make himself 'fit' whether French Connection, Little Bill, Captain of a nuclear sub or Norman. Top 5 on my actor list. Missed his prowess since his retirement in 2004. Good man, good work.
I know that the film was only (very) loosely based on the 1954 Milan state championship run. But I always thought it was a shame that Pizzo didn't feature Milan's game in the semi-state finals...played against Indianapolis Crispus Attucks, who was led by star sophomore guard Oscar Robertson.
Attucks, of course, went on to win the following two state championships behind Robertson -- with records of 31-1 and 31-0.
Attucks coach Ray Crowe actually did appear in the film, as the head coach of the South Bend Central team that the Huskers played in the state finals.

An under rated film of his was Uncommon Valor. That movie brought me to tears.
At the end when Luther and Otis were taken to prison by Superman, Otis kept repeating Luthors words and Luthors gets mad at him was a funny scene.
