I AM VERY EXCITED AT THE INITIAL STEPS IU HAS TAKEN FOR THE CLASS OF 2017...

Yes that's all caps for a reason.

Because the NCAA doesn't allow unlimited scholarships this next class will undoubtedly be the smallest Coach Wilson has brought in during his tenure. This past one was larger than we anticipated (Matt Weaver excluded) and until the spring roster is produced, we don't know what attrition may have taken place.

Obviously we have 11 months or so before national signing day. So much can happen. IU has a terrific start to the 2017 class. Hanging on to these commitments will be a task. I'd rather be "hanging on" than scrounging for talent. IU has come a long way.

So with r (4) commitments and roughly 10 (we know of) to 15 commitments for this next class, where does IU go?

I've tried looking at the roster and identifying needs.. (No luck).
Knowing Coach Wilson likes to replace a player the year before he leaves, I looked at numbers at the position for 2015 and anticipated the roster next yr... (a pointless and stupid waste of time)
I've researched the 4/2/5 defense and tried to look at what the needs might be.... (even dumber as we haven't seen how the defense will look or be played.)

I came to a conclusion... I'm just hyped and anxious and pumped over IU football and can't wait for the season to start. In fact, I think they should play year round so I can get my IU football "FIX" right now..
(Ok my being an only child is starting to show).

Since we haven't seen this defense, I'm not sure a true OLB in the SAM style has a position. I'm not sure how the old "Bandit" will be used. I've seen the 4/2/5 with both the down AND standing DE. That's much like the BANDIT but until we see it. WE DON'T KNOW.. The old open field SAM linebacker hat now becomes the hybrid (Husky) safety role. So we have two positions that we don't know how they will play out. How will guys like Newton and Covington and Stringer and Walker be utilized in this defense? Same with Gooch, Sykes, Wilson. WE DON'T KNOW...

It will be interesting to see and fun to watch.

I'm not sitting in the IU recruiting office and I have no idea how they view or rank the players on their "big board" for 2017.
I know I really really really want R.J. Potts at safety. Since they've recruited Fitzgerald to play the Husky spot, Potts would be great as a rangy, fast mid field attacker who can cover the middle and get to the sidelines.
I know I'd really like LeShaun Minor of BD and/or Derrius Mullins of Ohio to play the defensive interior.

I don't know if IU will be recruiting any traditional OLB players. Unless it's to move them inside to play with speed. Everyone talks about how you have to have guys who can play in space. But if you can't stand up to OSU and Mich and MSU's inside run, it won't matter if you can cover the quick bubble screen of Rutgers.

SO TONS OF ??? remain.

So right now you're asking yourself why you're reading this post.

Well, it's because like me.... You're an IU football junkie and you can't wait for spring practice to roll around. Let alone next fall.

Go IU football.
