My church is open non-stop too, with no covid that U’ve heard of. We also spend a fortune on sanitization, strict enforcement of masks, distancing, and contact tracing. I don’t see that working in public schools for reasons of legal liability and laws.

Vaccines will be the next flash point. Teachers unions wanting to continue remote learning after teachers are vaccinated. Numbers are relevant, but won't be relevant much longer with regards to school openings.
Because they stand in front of 20-30 kids, sometimes as many as six different sets of 20-30 kids, teaching our kids. Schools which are open for even hybrid schedules, the teachers should be toward right after first responders.

Teachers should be at the front of the line and should be required to teach in person once they're all vaccinated. If they refuse the vaccine then they should be discharged.

Public sector unions have long enjoyed the job-creating utility of the ratio...kids per teacher, prisoner per guard, and my wife tells me, patients per nurse. The CDC has now delivered to teachers unions one of the cleverest ratios yet: 6-feet separation in school buildings, indefinitely.
Parochial schools have a modicum of control over the kids and families. They also tend to have involved parents which makes all of the difference. CPS like IPS is largely a dumping ground for free babysitting.
American Academy of Pediatrics from June: "6 feet between students is not feasible without drastically limiting the number of students. Schools should weigh the benefits of strict adherence to a 6-feet spacing rule between students with the potential downside if remote learning is the only alternative."
Unions I have 1st hand experience with tend only to protect those who really do not want to work.
