Question about coaching big men

Does a good big man coach have to have played as a big man himself?

To use a football reference, I just don't see how a defensive back could ever become a good o-line coach because of all the little tricks an ex-o-lineman would know. Does this make sense?

I think it does to some degree but it makes more sense in football because their are so many very different positions on both sides of the ball.

Absolutly not, but IMO it helps considerably if they actually played the game at some meaningful level at some point.
