We are 7-1 and 2-0 in the Big 10. I couldn’t have realistically hoped for any better.
I am impressed with some of the defensive tweaks Coach Woody has made to shore up our perimeter defense. The endless switching against small lineups exposed us big time in the early games and we have moved away from that.
Malik and Ke’l are just an absolute force as a tandem down low. With just a little outside shooting, defenses would really be at a loss as to how to defend us.
This team plays really hard. I don’t remember a game all year where I walked away from it thinking the effort wasn’t there.
Coach Woody sure does have a recruiting pitch to any big man at this point. After helping transform Trayce into the NBA-level player he is and instantly getting the lightbulb to come on for Ke’lel, the results speak for themselves.
We are really watching Malik hit a maturity level. He was absolutely horrible for the first 30 minutes last night, but instead of sulking, came back to dominate the final 10. And the stupid fouls are vastly declining.
This bench may really have something. Walker, Banks, Gunn and Cupps all bring something a little different and it makes me feel better if we do hit some injuries.
Coach Woody has really stepped up the past few games. I mentioned the defensive tweaks, but he has drawn up some great plays coming out of timeouts, his second half rotations have been on point, and he just seems to be getting guys to buy into their individual rules as the season goes on. Switching Ke’lel onto Nkamwoah last night late was also huge.
I looked at the Big Ten schedule for us and it is really set up for us to succeed. The teams we play twice are not good other than Purdue (Maryland, Minnesota, Penn St, Nebraska). It should help our win loss record, but maybe stunt us a little in the computer rankings.
Let’s go get one of the next two, baby!
