Personally I think we'll see all three guys out there at some point this season...; whether they'll be in as prepackaged plays, or otherwise... The good news is that it "sounds" like we might actually go three and a half deep who are actually ready to play (the "half being a solid Walk-On) this Fall... Plus an emergency QB now playing at WR (who will also probably line up at QB at some point as a Wildcat style back [just a guess on my part]...).

Things are looking up!!!

What happens if all play very well in the scrimmage with little separation between them? As a coach, you like to think the gamer steps up but that doesn't always show up in scrimmage.

Player and Coaches vote 10 days prior to Kickoff would be how I'd do it... Than a coin flip if it's a tie...

May as well have them listed as 1A & 1B +...

History tells us we'll see them both out there at some point...

How the backup handles the news can tell you a lot about a guys leadership skills too... or lack of...

Exactly. If no clear #1 emerges the decision as to who will start most certainly must consider which QB would best accept being #2.

I found Trey Walker's bio interesting:

Prep/Personal: Did not play football at New Trier High School ... three-year hockey letterwinner ... team captain his junior season ..

He's a hockey player! You know he'll love to get in there and scrap!

With CTA’s emphasis on ball security, and the need to improve decision making, there will need to be a dramatic difference Friday to pick a QB1. I don’t expect that to happen. It’s not that surprising that a RS SR and RS JR are still close. A week longer won’t hurt.

I predict there will be a 1A and 1B and both will play. Maybe 1C.

A good Vegas bet would be if the starting QB finishes the game.

So.... will it actually be decided, or has it always been decided?

Nobody is going to know when "it's decided."
It'll be announced less than an hour before the kickoff against Illinois and it'll be Bazelak.
Tuttle may look as good in practice, but sometimes golfers look good on the driving range and look totally different on the course.

He will hold onto the name to make preparation more difficult, but it won't be a surprise.

They put them both underneath giant cups and mix them around and have Tom Allen pick a cup.
Whomever is underneath it is the starter.

Does Dexter Williams have a shot as the dark horse? He would seem to fit Bells run 1st offense better than the other 2.

Not early. Bazelak likely wins the job. Will be interesting when they actually decide so they start allocating practice reps, which they aren’t currently splitting.

I predict they will both need to play in the first game. Not sold yet. Go Hoosiers!
I have always advocated for giving your backup reps in games early in the schedule as well as during mop up duty, and have been critical of TA not doing so considering the injury bug that follows IU.

If and when this happens, I think it will help.

Word. I know people don't like hearing insulting comments about Tuttle, but the truth can be harsh at times. This is 1 of those times. Bazelak had better be the clear #1.
They are both getting significant reps (which is smart), but they know who they are going with. As do we.

And yet, we rarely do it.

You say that, but Gremel looked as good as any of them last year.
Better than MP and JT? I didn’t see that. Sheridan was let go in large part because he didn’t manage that position well, especially given the injuries that we all knew were a strong possibility. Having to start and play the #5 guy was clear evidence he didn’t look after that room well, in my opinion.

Limited practice time allocates reps to the starter, and nearly every coach likes to use games to maximize those reps. Go talk to any coach at just about any level and they’ll tell you that’s the tough choice they have to make.

It doesn't matter who is quarterback if the offensive line is anywhere near as bad as it was last year.

I'm with you... he did look AS GOOD ... since you didn't say better. ;)

Unfortunately, none of the QB's looked good, at all. Bu, I don't think there was a QB in the country that would have looked any good with that pathetic of an "O" that was put together last year.

It was decided when they decided to recruit Bazelak.
That’s obviously their preferred outcome, but I think there is genuine surprise that CB hasn’t been able to win the job on the field. He‘ll start the season but we’ll need both of them, at least. We’ve needed multiple quarterbacks for most of the 2000’s.
