The game in front of us on BTN has been loaded with walks and is still going on as IU's game begins to start.

It will be RHP Cole Gilley on the mound for IU with Stadler behind the plate. Gilley has an ERA of 4.62 and a WHIP of 1.13 in 50.2 IP. He has 64 Ks to 14 BBs and an OBA of .219.

This will be Taylor's last appearance at the Bart, and also Dickerson, and here is the batting order. Moore, Taylor, Dickerson, Hanley, Malamazian, Wiggins, Denny (DH), Cerny, and Stadler.

We need far more than what we got at the top of the order in yesterday's game if we want to take this series, where the top 3 batters in the lineup went 1 for 10. We just didn't get any clutch hitting when we had the opportunity to score yesterday and finished that game with seven straight innings of zero on the board. IU has yet to go yard in this series.

Purdue will counter with LHP Easton Storey on the mound with an ERA of 4.28 and a WHIP of 1.40 in 40.0 IP. He has 51 Ks to 21 BBs and an OBA of .236.

It's mostly sunny and 81 degrees with no rain predicted. The wind is E at 10 mph with gusts to 17 mph.

T1st:

Gilley gave up a single to start the game, but the runner was nailed by Stadler trying to steal 2nd. A groundout got the 2nd out. Gilley then gave up a two-out walk on a full count. A groundout retired the side.

B1st:

Moore led off and was hit by a pitch. Taylor walked on a full count and IU has two runners on with no outs.

A WP sent the runners to 2nd and 3rd and no outs.

Another WP scored Moore with Taylor on 3rd and no outs. Dickerson popped up for the first out.

Here we go again. A runner on 3rd with no outs and Dickerson popped out, Hanley Kd, and Malamazian popped out, stranding Taylor at 3rd after no outs. It seems that this season, if IU has a runner on 3rd and less than two outs, the odds are they won't score the runner from 3rd.

End of 1st: IU 1 PU 0

T2nd:

Gilley faced the 5 thru 7 hitters and got a groundout, and then got a K for two outs. Another K retired the side as Gilley put them down in order.

B2nd:

It's the 6 thru 8 hitters up with Wiggins up and he Kd. Denny walked on a full count.

Cerny walked on a 3-1 count to put two on and one out.

Stadler walked on four pitches to load the bases and one out.

That chased the Boiler starter who had major command problems while giving up no hits. They brought in RHP Avery Cook who is normally their closer (I believe) and his ERA is 3.57 and a WHIP of 1.39 in 35.1 IP.

Cook walked Moore on four pitches to score Denny and the bases are still loaded with one for Taylor.

Taylor hit a SAC fly to score Cerny and IU has a 3-0 lead without a hit in the game.

A two-out, three-run homer by Dickerson on a no doubt homer to LF to five IU a 6-0 lead and their first hit of the game. Hanley flied out to end the inning.

End of 2nd: IU 6 PU 0

Gilley faced the 8 thru 1 hitters and he got the leadoff hitter on a groundout and the a K for two outs.

A two-out single put a runner on. A groundout retired the side.

B3rd:

It's the 5 thru 7 hitters up with Malamazian leading off and he grounded out.

Wiggins was hit by a pitch to put a runner on with one out.

On a pop-out, Wiggins was caught off base to end the inning.

End of 3rd: IU 6 PU 0

It's the 3 thru 5 hitters up and Gilley Kd the leadoff hitter. A single put a runner on with one out.

A FC put a runner on at the 1st with the runner at 1st reaching 2nd and one out.

A groundout sent both runners to 2nd and 3rd and two outs.

A two-out, three-run homer cut IU's lead in half at 6-3.

The FC play was changed by the official scorer as a throwing error on Moore and that came back the haunt IU with the homer. A groundout retired the side.

B4th:

It's the 8 thru 1 hitters up with Cerny leading off. IU still has only one hit in the game and that was Dickerson three-run blast. IU needs to wake up at the plate as the lead was cut in half after the error led to the Purdue homer.

Cerny grounded out for the first out.

Stadler walked on a 3-1 count with one out.

Moore lined out for the 2nd out. Taylor fouled out on the infield to end the inning.

End of 4th: IU 6 PU 3

Gilley faced the 9 thru 2 hitters. Gilley got a flyout for the first out and then a K for two outs. Another flyout retired the side as Gilley put them down in order and with his pitch count nearing 100, it was probably his last inning.

B5th:

It's the 3 thru 5 batters up and IU still has only one hit and thanks to control problems by the Boilers, they have six runs to show for that one hit.

Dickerson singled to lead off with Hanley flying out to the warning track for one out.

Dickerson stole 2nd to put a runner in scoring position and one out.

Malamazian doubled to score Dickerson to make it 7-3 IU. It's a good thing that Dickerson was not on 3rd or he may not have scored from there the way IU likes to strand runners there. I had to get that in.

With Malamazian at 2nd and one out, the Boilers went to the bullpen and brought in RHP Austin Klug with an ERA of 5.50 and a WHIP of 1.44 in 18.0 IP.

Wiggins flied out on the first pitch from Klug for two outs. Denny grounded out to end the inning.

End of 5th: IU 7 PU 3

I was mistaken about Gilley's pitch count and he is at 77 and back out there to face the 3 thru 5 hitters.

Gilley got a groundout on an outstanding play by Moore at 3rd.

A double that bounded away from Wiggins off his glove put a runner in scoring position with one out. A groundout moved the runner to 3rd with two outs.

A K retired the side.

B6th:

It's the 8 thru 1 hitters up with Cerny leading off and he singled.

Stadler reached on a bunt single to put two on and no outs when no one covered first base for the Boilers, and they were late getting there. It was the top of the order up for IU.

A SAC bunt by Moore sent the runners to 2nd and 3rd and one out with Taylor up.

Taylor was intentionally walked to load the bases with one out and Dickerson up.

Dickerson Kd for the 2nd out and it was another situation with a runner at 3rd and less than two outs and we couldn't get him in unless we get a clutch two-out hit.

Hanley walked on a full count to score Cerny to make it 8-3 IU with the bases still loaded and two outs.

Malamazian flied out to end the inning. IU has scored eight runs on five hits thanks to the Boilers command issues.

End of 6th: IU 8 PU 3

It was the bottom of the order up for the Boilers. IU brought in LHP Brayton Thomas with an ERA of 7.24 and a WHIP of 1.17 in 13.1 IP.

Thomas gave up a leadoff double with a groundout moving him to 3rd and one out.

A hit batter put runners on the corners with one out and Mercer better have a quick hook here if the next batter reaches. Thomas has put two on from the bottom of the order and now faces the top of the order.

A single scored a run with runners still on the corners and one out. IMO, Mercer has to go the bullpen since Thomas doesn't have it today.

Just as I posted that, Thomas day was over and off to the showers. IU brought in RHP Aydan Decker-Petty who got roughed up in his last appearance on the mound. D-P has an ERA of 7.25 and a WHIP of 1.57 in 22.1 IP.

D-P got just what the doctor ordered, a DP ball to retire the side with the damage limited to one run scored by the Boilers.

B7th:

It's the 6 thru 8 hitters up with Wiggins leading off and he cranked a homer to LF to give IU a 9-4 lead.

Denny grounded out for the first out.

Cerny doubled and then Brenczewski came in to pinch hit for Stadler and he was hit by a pitch.

The Boilers went to the bullpen and brought in RHP Joe Trenerry with an ERA of 4.22 and a WHIP of 0.94 in 10.2 IP.

Moore was hit by a pitch to load the bases with one out.

Taylor walked on a 3-1 count to score Cerny to make it 10-4 and the bases still loaded with one out and Dickerson up.

Dickerson singled to score Brenczewski to make it 11-4 and the Boilers went to the bullpen yet again and brought in RHP Enas Hayden with an ERA of 7.45 and a WHIP of 2.17 in 9.2 IP. IU could run-rule this game.

Hanley singled to score both Moore and Taylor to make it 13-4 and Dickerson on 3rd. If they can get Dickerson in, this game will be over with.

A single by Malamazian ended the game with Dickerson scoring.

Final: IU 14 PU 4

IU got 14 runs on 10 hits as they outhit the Boilers, 10-7. Command problems by Boiler pitchers were the primary reason for IU taking this game and the series. At one point, IU had six runs on just one hit which was the three-run blast by Dickerson. Purdue pitchers gave up 13 passes today to include nine walks and four hit batters, plus two WPs that played a part in the scoring.

IU had three multi-hit players.

Dickerson - 3 for 5 with a three-run homer and 4 RBIs.

Malamazian - 2 for 5 and a double plus the walk-off hit that ended the game on the run-rule. He had 2 RBIS.

Cerny - 2 for 3 with a double and he scored 3 runs.

Wiggins - 1 for 3 with a solo homer.

Hanley - 1 for 4 with 3 RBIs.

Taylor went 0 for 1 but walked 3 times and had a SAC fly for 2 RBIs.

Moore also went 0 for 1 with a BB and 2 HBPs and an RBI.

The pitching was good today with the exception to Thomas's very short outing, and the three pitchers used only gave up one earned run. Gilley had three runs scored on him, but only after a throwing error by Moore extended the inning that led to the 3-run homer and three unearned runs. Here are the pitching numbers.

Gilley - 6.0 IP with 5 hits to include a homer and double, 3 runs scored unearned and no earned runs. 6 Ks and a BB.

Thomas - 0.1 IP with 2 hits to include a double and an earned run. He also hit a batter.

Decker-Petty - 0.2 IP and his slate was completely clean while facing just one batter and getting an inning ending DP ball.

IU had the only error in the game and it led to the three-run homer by the Boilers after the inning should have been over.

An absolutely beautiful day for baseball on Mother's Day. And we had a chance to spot a rare sighting--a couple of clutch hits!

A satisfying conclusion to a pretty decent home season. Not all we fans had hoped for, and I'm sure it was not all that the players had hoped for, with so many talented hitters up and down the lineup.

Sad to realize that we won't see Devin or Korbyn up-close and personal again. Would have been nice to see them have a season that added up to something special.

But that's the fate of Northern college baseball. The odds are always against you. Well, we'll try again next year.

I checked to make darn sure I was correct and both Buhr and Vogel did not throw a pitch over the weekend. I haven't caught any of Mercer's post series comments so I don't know if that was a coach's decision or both just happened to have a setback right at the same time which is not likely. He may have been saving their arms for a tough road series at Michigan. If we are going to make any noise in the B1G tournament, we need middle relief innings out of both those pitchers and hopefully they are at full or near full strength in their comebacks from injury during the tournament.

I must be slipping, but one thing I meant to mention and didn't is that Mercer used just eight pitchers over the three-game series with the Boilers, and the need for both Buhr and Vogel just wasn't there for that reason. I suspect that was probably the case. Maybe against the Bearcats tomorrow, they might get an inning apiece to get them ready for the Michigan series. Just my thinking.

Understood but I would have thought getting buhr some work was planned since we would want more than an inning at a time from him. Maybe we’ll see him tomorrow?

Moot point on pitchers for tomorrow as game’s been canceled due to “weather”

I don't claim to closely follow the stats, but it seems as if the team is using the sacrifice to move runners much more than earlier in the season. Ptrich has lamented the inability to get runners home from 3rd with less than two outs....hopefully the issue is being addressed.

I don't know how many times we have had a runner at 3rd and less than two outs and the next batter up Kd, and we have to lead the conference in that stat. We just seem to not be able to make contact with the ball in that situation.

We seem to be stealing bases more frequently, or at least attempting to steal bases, as the season winds down. We are still 15th in the league in stolen bases this season with 41 steals in 51 games. Only Maryland with 37 steals in 53 games, and NW with 25 steals in 48 games are worse. By contrast, PSU leads with 102 steals in 49 games.
