Purdue Expels Student

I'm not sure. Sounds like the crazy liberal socialist Mitch Daniels is at it again. What happened to our right to be complete racist assholes?

The ACLU would probably like an answer to that question too. And before anyone goes there, the only credible "threat" in that video was to Purdue's reputation.

To be clear, the First Amendment does not protect behavior on campus that crosses the line into targeted harassment or threats, or that creates a pervasively hostile environment for vulnerable students. But merely offensive or bigoted speech does not rise to that level, and determining when conduct crosses that line is a legal question that requires examination on a case-by-case basis. Restricting such speech may be attractive to college administrators as a quick fix to address campus tensions. But real social change comes from hard work to address the underlying causes of inequality and bigotry, not from purified discourse. The ACLU believes that instead of symbolic gestures to silence ugly viewpoints, colleges and universities have to step up their efforts to recruit diverse faculty, students, and administrators; increase resources for student counseling; and raise awareness about bigotry and its history.

Sounds like to me that Daniels decided that threatening to run over protesters is inciting violence. See below:

In a statement, Daniels calls the post "racist and despicable," adding that "repeated statements posted on social media by Lawrence appear plainly intended to incite others and therefore create a risk of public safety issues in the current environment."

Other messages from Lawrence, which have circulated on social media, show him calling Black people the N-word.

The statement goes on to say:

"While some University officials had concluded the statements were protected speech under the First Amendment and University policy, President Daniels decided instead to take this summary action, calling Lawrence’s conduct completely and utterly unacceptable by a member of the Purdue community and cited the danger Lawrence poses to public safety.

Already addressed that.

In other news, he's been accepted at Ball State, with honors. ;)

More likely headed to lexington.

Can transfer in August and be eligible immediately for the bass fishing and protestor running over teams.

Good for Purdue good riddance. And don't think this won't happen in Btown...it will.

If that video is what got the kid expelled, then Mitch has gone off the deep end. No way that rises to any kind of level that would warrant expulsion. Kid may be a dick, but West Lafayette is full of them.
Just curious, what line would he have to cross in order to be expelled?

I don't know, but that video isn't it. Like I said, the kid may be a dick, but I just don't see how that video warrants expulsion. Now if the fishing team kicked him off, that might be appropriate. Representing the University and all that.

I didn't weight in earlier because I have no idea what else the joker may have posted but if that video is all his expulsion is based on he'll most likely be seeing a pay day from p u in the near future (in my opinion)...

The video was stupid and sophomoric, but to be fair it isn't any worse than the stupid and sophomoric our Commander in Chief has retweeted of him attacking members of the media.

I can't view the full video (we block Chinese companies for good reason), but I find no issue with the action.

However, this response did make me think:

One of the rare times I agree with you. I think the kid should be roundly condemned for his actions, but I also think we should be much more forgiving of stupidity that hasn't yet caused great harm when it is in the actions of teenagers. I've felt similarly torn about simply revoking admissions offers to students whose social media accounts revealed some ugly stuff. I'd prefer we find a better balance in teenagers feeling the consequences of their actions without sending them on a further negative path. All of that needs to start with honest remorse on the teenagers' part though.

I think that a lot of today's adults are quite lucky that such outlets weren't available when they were younger. How many of them would have survived the scrutiny that they are so eager to apply today?

Wouldn't we all be happier if facebook, twitter, instagram just didn't exist....the bad far out weights the good. Social media is just stale

if you’re active on social media outside of promoting your business you need therapy

The kid also had other soc med posts using the N word. I agree with mitch that this kid could easily incite further issues with the makeup of that campus and the volatile time we are in.

no one is taking his ability to get a degree away, he just needs to start fresh somewhere else and be far less of an asshole. The Paint Crew will miss him though.

no other school is going to let him in.

purdue, a state school, violated his first amendment rights

Someone needs to brush up on their Constitution.
In absolutely no way were his first amendment rights violated.

"Congress shall make no law respecting an establishment of religion, or prohibiting the free exercise thereof; or abridging the freedom of speech, or off the press; or the right of the people peaceably to assemble, and to petition the government for a redress of grievances."

The first amendment means you can't be thrown in jail for exercising free speech, not that you can't be thrown out of school for being an idiot.

I tend to agree with this take. If it’s a lifetime achievement award for other tweets in his profile, then I get it...but that tweet alone is not expulsion worthy.

It was one of several mentioned.

Plus the kid has a punchable face like the rest of the kids in the Paint Crew.

I can't imagine how much shit I would have gotten into. I was a mouthy smartassed kid; had I typed stuff I said and it was out there for all to see in perpetuity... <shudder>

like it or not, it is a right

Was he arrested? I'm sorry where do you get the substitution of Congress for

I just think apart from his words/actions, that it would be hard to allow him to continue at PU, and there not be real safety concerns. Maybe if he wasn't a member of the "crowd favorite" Bass fishing team LOL... Seriously, where are they gonna hide him?

This may be your answer...

repeated statements posted on social media by Lawrence appear plainly intended to incite others and therefore create a risk of public safety issues in the current environment."

Other messages from Lawrence, which have circulated on social media, show him calling Black people the N-word.

I'd like to think I'd be smart enough not to broadcast my assholery all over the Internet, but then I do post here so....

If it's a "whole body of work" thing, then maybe there are grounds. I'm still withholding judgment. "Incitement" was used against the antiwar demonstrators in the 60s and 70s, so that doesn't hold much water with me. I'm pretty hard core on free speech. Mitch might be fully within his rights to expel the asshole, but I'm not sure I think it's justified. I suspect he's going to be looking over his shoulder for a long time as it is. Justice doesn't always have to be meted out by the authorities.

I cut my teeth in the alt hierarchy of Usenet. This place is like an ice cream social.

You and me both. Hell, half of my music collection today came from the alt.binaries.* hierarchy of Usenet, long before anyone ever dreamed of Napster or Limewire. That was like the wild west. Fun days.

I took a lot of shit for using Outlook Express as my newsreader, but it had the slickest 'combine & recode' functionality built in of any of the other options available.

alt.binaries.* was where I got my pr0n in the dialup days. Damn, that was work.

Forte Agent was my newsreader. Yes, there was lots of pr0n in those binaries groups. You'd have to download all the parts and put them all together..only to find out it was a fat chick with hairy pits. What a pisser.
