BS 1 - we force 3 and out with decent coverage.

IU 1 - we need (and get) a FG due to a Hale drop and Penix missing Westbrook

BS 2 - Ball called for PI early in drive. I thought it was a weak call. Yes, his right hand was touching the WR but he actually knocked the ball down with his left. And the only reason the WR was even in the play was because the ball was under thrown. A regular pass was probably overthrown, but the guy had to slow and come back so Ball was on him instead of between him and the ball. Nice drive by BS, but nice red zone hold by IU. FG.

PS - 24. James. On kick receive team. Up front. Pushed a guy in the back. No call.

IU 2 - 7 in the box with 8 sneaking in late when Scott shifts. Happened often. Scott gets 3. Next play - 7 in box. No shift. No 8 sneak. Boom. 75 yard TD pass. Penix stands on 15 to throw. Westbrook flat out-runs the safety and catches it in stride at the 32. 53 in the air. 32 YAC. 75 from scrimmage. Niiiice. Interesting TV shot. They brag on Scott blocking. Show him on the sideline. I’d swear he is still a bit woozy from the helmet shot.

BS 3 - another TV moment. Mention slips by the WR. The LOS turf seems slick. Dropped pass a little behind the receiver. 3 and out.

IU 3 - Gest in. Our backfield movement is now noticeable. Our backs need to know a lot. So does our QB. Scott clears out left. Hale is wide left. Fake throw to Scott who is open. ?? Doesn’t get open on the long route. We throw to Hale and it’s a pick. Bad decision.

BS 4 - we get burned in zone coverage - gave em a wide open catch inside the 10. Their early run game was better than late and they get a TD.

At this point, with everybody fresh, it’s disappointingly evenly-matched. They gave ND a tough opener last year. I’m hoping that is why they gave us a tough ride yesterday.

IU 4 - it’s now 10-10. Here is where you WANT us to fight back hard. Hendershot takes a hard kidney shot. He is not fast or delicate. I like. Nice Westbrook catch. No run though. Scott can get 3 but nothing is open. Then a bad throw behind the receiver. INT No. 2. Crap.

BS 5 - a jump over Fitzgerald and a PI call when Matthews got beat by a nice cut keeps them alive, but we win the drive on a solid 3rd down run stop and pressure on QB 4th down stop. A NICE one arm grab-you-and-throw-you-down tackle by Ziemba is a highlight.

IU 5 - long drive. Weird. 11 plays. A couple of free plays. Penix is 1-7 on the drive because the free shots were thrown up. Walker gets a nice run. Run game moves it. Philyor misses a catchable TD. Philyor misses a second catchable TD. FG.

BS 6 - Harris not mobile. Misses Plitt. Plitt gets a nice 3rd down run. But we stuff em when Head hurries a third down pass.

IU 6 - A bad overthrow of Hendershot by Penix. 6 in the box - Scott gets more. 7-8 and we get nada. Nice scramble by Penix after Walker misses a blitz by diving at toes, and got his butt chewed by Hart. Nice nice catch by Whop. FG after Penix gets hit and stays up. Free play and Westbrook doesn’t catch a possible TD.

We scored on 4 out of 6 drives. No punts. 2 INTs.

Second Half

IU 7 - Ellis gets 2 shots at KO return. On second, if cuts out, it’s a TD. He cuts in. Fitzgerald grabs him and makes him watch the video on the way off the field to show him. I like. Reverse to Whop. Good runs. Quick hitters. Penix goes under center and Scott scores up the gut. TD. YAY! A second half first-possession score!

BS 7 - defense needs to send a message and shut em down. Doesn’t. Follow up a sack with a 2nd and 17 TD pass. Can’t survive success. We make a big play, get happy, lose focus, McFadden misses a tackle and boom. Momentum rejected.

IU 8 - danger throw. Missed pass. 3 and out.

BS 8 - Ball gets a stupid penalty. Still make em punt. Looks like maybe depth is starting to take a toll. But not really ...

IU 9 - incompletions. Gest misses a catchable. Only good play is QB run for 15. Punt.

BS 9 - incompletions. Punt.

Why do people not run the dang ball?

IU 10 - wide open TD dropped by Westbrook. Still score. Plus trickery for 2.

BS 10 - nice pressure by us, followed by another big play allowed in the zone coverage. Plus Balls second penalty. Still Held em to a FG shot - wide right.

IU 11 - 3 and out. Late game malaise. But BOOM. Punt to the 7. 63 from scrimmage.

BS 11 - wasted punt. They work us a 93 yard TD drive. 5 passes. 3 rushes. One was caught while laying on ground. Next took 4 guys to tackle. Allen calls time and chews butt. Good. Last one matters. Missed INT. 36 yards. TD. I fear we take too much big play risk. Let’s just do our job? Take what the game gives us.

IU 12 - Big run by Penix. Scott gets 2. Hendershot again. And now, James is in for his only carry. (Why? Not sure. Game is still in doubt.) We need a score. Momentum is with BS. We settle for a 50 yard FG. But up 10 at 2:15 to go. Excellent clock burn. Take a lesson, Kevin Wilson. And better than last year too.

BS - gotta pass. Pick. Game over.

Overall:

BS schemed to stop Scott and make the newbie QB prove himself. Still, I’m disappointed our OL did not impose their will.

Defense gave up 2.2 per rush. Not bad.
Comparable to other Big 10/MAC games.

Nice opener for DeBoer. Had to be creative. Was. Success breeds success.
Strong passing game. Used TE, RB and everybody. Drops gotta stop.
Running game insufficient. 8 in the box a lot. But still ...
Defense scheme seemed good. Missed tackles gotta stop.
Not bad for a first game jittery with HC in new role, DC in new role, OC new and QB new.
Did not play like an 8 game winner.
If Maryland is better, may be hard to get at this level. What does Howard game show?
NW looked like more of a winnable than Maryland or Nebraska.

After 1:

Still looks doable to beat Ball State, Eastern Illinois, UConn, Rutgers.
Maryland? Looks less winnable, but it was Howard.
Nebraska? Gave up more than expected to South Alabam. Where Wommack came from.
NW? Looks more beatable. Johnson was called “ineffective” and replaced until Green was hurt.
Purdue? Looks more beatable. Scheme to beat Moore, if you can. Sindelar was better than expected. But they choked. No other way to put it.
