Here are comparisons from last season to this season on returning pitchers to our bullpen, and I only listed the pitchers that have seen the most action so far. This just compares a few of the key stats. The 2021 stats are for the entire season of 44 games, with the 2022 stats current through today's games with 30 games played so far. I didn't include HBPs but for the season we are at 62 in 30 games, while we had just 31 in 44 games last season. In BBs, we are at 180 in 30 games, while we were at the same 180 BBs for the season in 44 games last season. On WPs, we are at 43 in 30 games so far and last season we had just 26 total in 44 games.

Stahl - 2021 season stats - 3-0 with an ERA of 1.80 in 25 IP, 5 ERs, 5 BBs, B/Avg .250

2022 stats thru 30 games - 0-2 with an ERA of 10.07 in 19.2 IP, 22 ERs, 12 BBs, B/Avg .325

Modugno - 2021 season stats - 3-1 with an ERA of 2.09 in 38 IP, 9 ERs, 16 BBs, B/Avg .207

2022 stats thru 30 games - 0-2 with an ERA of 9.39 in 23 IP, 24 ERs, 15 BBs, B/Avg .320

2022 stats thru 30 games - 0-5 with an ERA of 10.87 in 25.2 IP, 31 ERs, 19 BBs, B/Avg .291

Tucker - 2021 season status - 0-1 with an ERA of 4.09 in 22 IP, 10 ERs, 5 BBs, B/Avg .264

2022 stats thru 30 games - 1-2 with an ERA of 4.55 in 27.2 IP, 14 ERs, 15 BBs, B/Avg. .250

This is almost shocking....

Thank you for making my point that Glant is the most incompetent coach this program has hired. Every pitcher does not get worse unless this guy is a complete clown that has no idea what he is doing.

Throw in the fact he has produced the worst ERA in team history and I hope this idiot never works in college baseball again. Wouldn't wish this incompetence on my worst enemy.

I honestly had no idea it was this bad. Those numbers tell a terrible story, but it’s one I don’t fully understand. Seriously, how can a simple pitching coach change turn a whole staff to mush? Did he make them throw with their off hand? Pitch blindfolded? It’s just crazy to me.

Control is a lot like a golf swing, finding the most efficient swing, and repeating

Without knowing, it almost seems as if these pitchers have been trying something different....and have not reacted well.
The number of BB and HBP, year to year, are very troubling.

I was going to post something like this.....stats are probably even worse now, a week later. This is absolutely ridiculous. Perhaps worrying about spin rates is not the way to go. I have lost a lot of the confidence I had in Mercer, tbh.

I was watching Modugno pitch standing right behind home plate. (You can do this at RU because we don’t have a stadium per se.) We were looking at his numbers compared to what good stuff he had, and none of us could figure out why his season numbers are what they are. One former longtime high school baseball coach was particularly perplexed. I would expect his numbers to move closer to his talent level, no matter who is coaching him. If, theoretically, he wanted to transfer back home, I would be happy if RU got him.

Well his numbers aren’t great. He’s got 30/18 k:bb, and a whip of 1.93 in 29 innings pitched. He’s given up 15 XBH On 38 hits allowed. The more illuminating stat would be how often he is in positive counts vs negative counts. I be that doesn’t look good either, and the scouts pretty simple on him. He doesn’t work ahead often, and can’t land his secondary stuff, and the fastball is usually in the zone. Unless he’s 94-96, kids can hit the fastball at this level.

There is no doubt the pitching coach is making all of these kids do something completely different than what they've had success doing in the past.

It is the height of both arrogance and incompetence. Especially - ESPECIALLY - if it has anything to do with spin rate.

A spectacular failure by Mercer. Unbelievably awful and he'd be wise to pull the plug immediately.

I totally agree that the tinkering by the pitching coach during the off season has resulted in a disastrous season by the pitching staff, and there can't be any other reason for it. It was posted that Mercer said in an interview that they were working on the spin on pitches when I think they tinkered about more than just that, and pitchers that were reliable last season all of a sudden are having all kinds of control problems as well as getting hammered. How do you recruit kids when they and their parents as well as their high school coach see that IU pitchers aren't getting better, but are getting worse under the current pitching coach, and it all falls on the shoulders of the head coach. Would you want to send your kid to IU if you feel your kid could be ruined of any possible future in the game? I wouldn't. There is absolutely nothing wrong with our hitting and it has to be frustrating to the hitters to see what is going on.

I hate to see what next year's roster brings. Sadly I see a lot of defectors again unless something changes. The Portal can be a big help but if the kids don't see any hope we will be stuck with a bunch of D-II kids next season.
I can't blame kids for trying to move up to the Big Leagues but it was a "head scratcher" to see the roster turnover that we had. It seems that about everyone that could leave--- left! There were several players that were drafted that could have come back and possibly better there status but they chose to move on. It looks like losing our Pitching Coach was maybe the biggest loss.
I want it on the record that I have nothing against the current Coaches or that I have some inside info. I love IU Sports and want all things "IU" to go well! It is maddening to see this kind of drop off. I feel like there is talent on this team. It just makes a person wonder what is going on.

I’m glad to read opinions that mirror what I’ve seen from almost the first inning this year. But I’m more sad it’s true. From my favorite program to about like the rest in just a couple years. Bummer.
