Philyor is key to success

He will no doubt be a center piece of this year's offense. DeBord has a big time/NFL WR in Westbrook and a young, but very talented WR in Whop.

Contrary to the Big Ten crew, I think that's a very good foundation to build upon. Are people forgetting how good Westbrook was?? He is better than Simmie Cobbs because Westbrook brings consistency AND big play ability.

Glen Mason was too busy talking about Nebraskas WRs that we've never heard of.

We have some players coming off injuries. I like our receivers if they are all ready to play and we don't get another first game injury.

I think it would be easier if the starting QB was known and they could work to develop the timing between each other. There is always a QB competition. That can be a good thing at some positions, but it would be helpful if we had a clear #1QB to take the majority of the snaps as the season is near. Maybe they have given one QB more reps without naming them the starter.

If this article is correct and Philyor is the key to WR success, then our WRs are in good hands, this season.
Go ahead! Call me a Philyor Fan! I've seen him WHOP! too many defenders not to be one!

Here's the thing......you know if Penix does not win the starting job, he'll get significant time in at least 4 games under the new RS rule. The coaches wouldn't risk letting him transfer when he is already right there with the other two as a true freshman. And he might do so well in limited action that he wins the job outright.

Although I agree with you that it would be better to have a clear starter, I think you have to let it play out between Ramsey and Dawkins as the first game starter.

I also think there are a couple of other angles to this. First, Allen would have to have some big balls to name Penix the full-time starter out of the box. I don't think that happens unless he is clearly, on opening day, better than the other two. Second, I bet the coaches hoped that Dawkins would be the obvious starter right away. As others have said, you don't normally get a high profile JUCO QB if you don't think he's going to start. Now the first thing Allen said about the QBs on Saturday was that Ramsey was 'extremely accurate' (or words to that effect) in his passing, and that Dawkins had had less than a great day passing on Sunday (but had been better on Saturday).

Bottom line is I'm thinking Ramsay's going to be the starter on day 1 after all............

If it's very close between the three with minimal separation, I'd like to see Penix get the nod. Letting Penix start as a true freshman would pay HUGE dividends down the road. I can live with that...

The question becomes does Penix know and understand the playbook? He should because he was here all spring and played in the spring game.

If he's as smooth as people are reporting, he just might be the starter come October.

I remember Allen commenting before last year about Lagow's accuracy. I don't usually hear coaches address that publicly. Accuracy may be the final measure of who he wants starting. In a way it would be positive for Ramsey to earn the spot over an experienced player. On the negative side, it means that Dawkins isn't a big step up in talent as some hoped he would be.

The new rules do make it almost a certainty to see Penix at some point. If Ramsey does start, Dawkins could be a wildcat option with enough passing ability for defenses to respect. Is that why we brought him here?

We should expect a QB competition next year as well, I would prefer Ramsey become a team leader with Penix understanding his time will come.

I am excited to see Dawkins. Happy for Penix to redshirt. Only play him if it’s an emergency.

If things are all about equal between all 3 QBs at the moment, I'm thinking Dawkins will be the starter week 1. Dawkins didn't just miss IU's spring practice, he didn't participate in Arizona's and that fits with Allen calling him rusty, but shaking that rust off. He's behind in learning the playbook and practice, but also means that he has the highest likelihood of making a big jump and creating separation from Ramsey/Penix between now and opening day.

I'd like to see Ramsey start with Dawkins coming in for key situations and to provide another thing the defense has to worry about. Think he could be a weapon in the red zone. Could be possibly play a different position with two quarterbacks on the field?

Hope Penix redshirts.

I'll be happy if Dawkins is ready to seriously help during the last 7 or 8 games of the season, particularly over the last 4 when injuries have usually taken their toll on the starters...

Ramsey is going to be the starter. I think Allen has more trust in him and we have to win the 1st 3 games and I just don't see them risking it with Dawkins who can get wild with his passing.
