Peyton Hendershot Arrested:

Well shit. Not good at all.

“Bloomington police arrested Indiana tight end Peyton Hendershot late Saturday night on multiple charges.

According to jail records, Hendershot was booked into Monroe County Jail on preliminary charges of felony residential entry, as well as misdemeanors for domestic battery, criminal mischief, and criminal conversion.

His bond was set at $2,000.

Bloomington police Sgt, Ben Burns confirmed Hendershot’s arrest. IU athletics released the following statement:

“Indiana University Athletics is aware of the arrest of redshirt sophomore Peyton Hendershot,” a department spokesperson said. “IU Athletics will continue to gather facts, cooperate with and monitor the legal and administrative processes, and take further action as the evolving situation warrants.”

Hendershot is coming off of an All-Big Ten season where he set the program’s receiving records for a tight end. He caught 52 passes for 622 yards and four touchdowns.”

Not trying to make excuses for what was clearly immature, idiotic and irresponsible behavior, not to mention being incredibly stupid, I don’t think he’s going to get kicked out of the program. His girlfriend will drop the charges. He will have to go to anger management counseling. And I imagine Coach Tom Allen will have somebody checking on him at the library at closing every Saturday night.

I imagine CTA will put some other bells and whistles on him too.

It may happen that way but it's pretty much the story book version.

We ( I mean college sports supporters) are very harsh with peer universities whose programs have had a history of the “wink and nod” approach to actions of athletes that we would consider deplorable were they committed against our daughters or our sisters. What we must remember is we are all only one unfortunate incident by an 18-22 year old “jock” from being in the same position. College sports is the classical “glass house” and when we allow ourselves to throw stones at others for tolerance of offensive behavior we better be prepared for our next such occasion. It is not a question of IF, but WHEN such a moment will arrive.

Based on what I read, that sounds like it could be possible. Cops always overcharge; odds are he'll plead to a misdemeanor and be on legal probation, and CTA will have him on a super short leash.

If I were in charge, all male scholarship athlete would be given a subscription to PornHub and be forbidden to date.

And you would be scratching in the chicken coop looking for male athletes. Surely you forgot the “tic”

He seems like a good kid, but this is not cool. No male, but especially no FB player should lay a hand on a woman. If he really grabbed her by throat and threw her against the wall, that’s a serious offense and he may not realize how on thin ice he could be to continue playing FB at IU. I personally like to believe in fairness and second chances in life, but his may have to be at another school.

I thought he had an amazing year and a bright future, so I’m not trying to “throw the book at him” pe se, but a 6’4 250 lb guy can’t let a GF (or ex) cause him to go warrior mode on her even if worst case scenario she wasn’t faithful. He has to know better and in today’s world, he “may” have punched his ticket out of the program.

TBD to see how Tom Allen, LEO culture handles an assault arrest in the program knowing a school can’t have kid gloves in 2020.

There is a lot we dont know. Where they estranged? Did he break the door down to gain entry or did he just enter without her letting him in which maybe he has done a hundred times? Did he grab her around the throat and push her against the wall or was he just warding her off and she got pushed against the wall? Not excusing anything and he screwed up by taking her phone at the very least and maybe a lot worse than that.

I read somewhere she accused him of choking her.

Not apologizing for him as if guilty of all of this he’s facing serious consequences.

But as psychologists say “kids frontal lobes aren’t fully developed until maybe mid-20’s” which can lead to bad decision making.

I can picture Peyton sitting overnight in jail cell, feeing mad at himself & ashamed that he let himself lose his cool and in one snap moment and is now in all papers, chat boards, embarrassed himself, family, & team, and how he wish he could take it all back.

Thats why I believe in forgiveness and redemption. If his second chance ends up having to be somewhere else, I would wish him well, hope that he gets some anger MGMT, learns from a mistake and can move on positively ahead. For now we wait.

If he did what he’s accused of doing, good riddance.
We don’t need to turn into Michigan State South or Ohio St West.
He knew the consequences of his actions, his second chance would be not kicking him out of school.
Getting a free education at a Big Ten school is something a lot of kids would die for and he blew that privilege when/if he did all the things he’s accused of.
And if he did do all that and remains on the team,I’ll lose a lot of respect for CTA.
If he were my kid Allen wouldn’t have to kick him off,I’d do it for him.
No excuse for putting your hands on girl under any circumstances, walk away and cool off.
I’m sure many on here won’t agree with that and that’s fine.

This sucks. What a way for a talented kid to waste a chance. But he's gone. And I hope the university/team doesn't try to cover up for a talented kid (I suspect they won't).

Opinion as a former deputy prosecutor:
There's no probable cause affidavit on file yet, but with the reporting on what happened, he'll likely catch a Strangulation charge (Lvl. 6 Felony), Residential Entry (Lvl. 6 Felony), and some level of battery charge as a misdemeanor. Based on the reporting, there's a chance he'll get a criminal confinement charge, which would either be a Lvl. 6 or Lvl. 5 felony, depending on some factors, but I'm guessing Lvl. 5. Potentially could be a Lvl. 3, which would obviously be a big deal for him personally.

I'm not buying the "his brain isn't fully developed" defense. If these allegations are true, he went to this woman's apartment looking for trouble and roughed her up. He knows, as we all do, that physical violence against women is wrong - - and criminal.

I, too, believe in forgiveness and redemption. But forgiveness is up to the victim, and redemption can come at another school.

I simply like to try and see best in people, and don't think he's an animal by nature. He totally lost his cool (it appears) and did something really, really stupid (and could have been dangerous) and a guy who was sitting really on top of world in a great situation, may have just pulled the plug on his own warm bath!

I don't want to revel in someone's mistake, as that's what I believe it was - a terrible lapse in judgment and not his normal self. I don't know him but that's my guess and I think at 20, kids are still or can still be immature. If the girl were my daughter, I'd be there for her in a second and would not want him near her after this. But my empathetic side for him (knowing I fully support the woman here) is just hate seeing athletes do dumb moves that jeopardize what could be in some cases their way out or chance to make a great living, let alone the free education. Just hate to see kids make bad mistakes, but he's now accountable for it. Hope it works out for her moving forward and that he gets the help he needs to proceed productively in life in the future too.

Not taking up for him or his conduct but I am also not judging on one side of the story. Seems like if there was proof of strangulation then it would not have been a misdemeanor assault charge.

Not to get too deep into the weeds, but arrest charges often don't mesh with what actually gets filed by the local prosecutor (and that goes both ways).

Like, I've seen arrests for Public Intox & driving while suspended that got charged as DUI. And I've seen arrests for something more serious that got charged as a lower level crime for various reasons.

I disagree completely. Immaturity is not ever an excuse for violence toward women. There are a million things he could have done instead. Calling it a "mistake" just makes it more likely he'll do it again since mistakes are often repeated.

Unfortunately, precedent from the Ellison case shows he is likely gone, even before all other facts surface, if any. Good luck, and get help.

I will definitely defer to your opinion.

Yes, he will likely plead down. But the University will likely not take that into account. Ellison was never charged with sexual assault, was allowed to practice with the team, only to be suspended from the university and subsequently permanently dismissed from the team.

OK, here's the part that is really strange. This is his EX-girlfriend...
How in the world does he end up doing her laundry?

EX;"Hey, could you come over to my apartment, take my dirty clothes, and wash them for me?" ??????????
OR
PH: "Is it ok if I do your laundry for you?"
Either way, if they are no longer dating, why would you do their laundry???

That's why I wonder if they were ex before the incident or just after. Why would he accuse her of being unfaithful if they were broken up?

There'd better be some evidence of physical harm for any of these charges to be a felony.

There are instances where someone beats the hell out of someone and puts them in the hospital and gets a midsemeanor charge.

I respect your view as a prosecutor, but you guys are trained to go for the throat. These are college kids, probably in a lovers spat. The woman has already tweeted that it's not the big deal it's made out to be, and she considers him a good person.

A probationary sentence with relationship counseling would suffice, if that's the situation.

But, there may be more come out. I'm not judging either way, but from what has been shown so far, a felony conviction is WAY out of line.

The charges and allegations against Ellison were a helluva lot more serious than this.

And, he was never charged - I've always found that odd.

If players are going to get thrown out for this type of lovers spat (assuming that's what it was - we'll find out the story in time), then we're starting to swing the wrong way, where no one is allowed any mistake without a chance at redemption.
