Penn State Game 1 (links): PSU wins 5-2

Clearly, we need to take care of business with a team like this. Even if successful, our RPI will probably take a small hit considering PSUs weak RPI. Our SOS, which is now 14 for both overall schedule and non-conference schedule, will probably take a little hit. All of that can be mitigated somewhat if most of our previous opponents and their previous opponents have a good weekend.

Penn State has 2 Big Ten wins on the season. Would definitely be a bad loss for IU.

Top 2nd: Nick Riotto grounds out to shortstop. Willie Burger grounds out to the third. Ryan Sloniger singles to shallow right. Christian Helsel flies out to right.

Still scoreless heading into B2.

Bottom 2nd: Luke Miller flies out to left. Craig Dedelow walks. Logan Sowers singles to left, advancing Dedelow to to second. Matt Gorski lays down a sac bunt advancing Sowers to second and Dedelow to third. Ryan Fineman grounds out to the pitcher.

Still scoreless heading into T3.

Top 3rd: Brett Davis flies out to right. Logan Goodnight triples to right center, then scores on a balk by IU starting pitcher Jonathan Stiever. Nadeau strikes out swinging. Hughes homers to left. Giavedoni flies out to left after a diving catch by Krupa.

Penn State 3, Indiana 1.

Bottom 5th: Krupa flies out to right. Butler singles through the left side. Lloyd strikes out looking. Miller strikes out swinging.

Still 3-1 Penn State heading into T6.

Penn St. pitcher looking pretty good throwing 93-95 mph fast balls. Beginning to get his curve over makes him tough. Lot of our guys having trouble getting around on that fast ball. Wonder why he hasn't won more.

Top 6th: Hughes reaches first on a fielding error. Giavedoni singles up the middle, advancing Hughes to second. Riotto reaches first on a fielder's choice, advancing Giavedoni to second with Hughes out at third. Burger strikes out swinging. Sloniger strikes out looking.

Still 3-1 Penn State heading into B6.

Pitching change for the Hoosiers entering T8: Junior righty Kade Krzysko now on the mound, replacing Stiever.

Stiever's unofficial final line: 7.0 IP, 6 H, 3 R, 3 ER, 7 K

Pitching change for Penn State entering B8: Junior lefty Taylor Lehman replaces starter Sal Biasi.

Biasi's unofficial final line: 7.0 IP, 4 H, 1 R, 1 ER, 3 BB, 6 K

Bottom 8th: Lloyd doubles to left center. Miller hits an RBI single up the middle, scoring Lloyd. Dedelow strikes out swinging.

Penn State decides to make another pitching change, swapping out Lehman for junior righty Nick Distasio. Lehman's unofficial final line: 1/3 IP, 1 ER, 1 K.

With Distasio on the mound, Sowers flies out to right then Gorski flies out to right.

Penn State 3, Indiana 2 heading into T9.

Top 9th: Riotto walks. Burger's sac-bunt advances Riotto to second. Sloniger grounds out to pitcher. Helsel hits an RBI single to left center, scoring Riotto. Davis hits an RBI single to score Helsel but is out after getting too far off the bag.

Penn State 5, Indiana 2 heading into B9.

Bottom 9th: Pinch-hitting for Fineman, Laren Eustace pops out to shortstop. Houston gets hit by pitch. Krupa fouls out to first. Butler pops out to shortstop.

FINAL: Penn State 5, Indiana 2.

While it wasn't a devastating loss, it was certainly a bad loss. We had better take the series, because if not, it will be a major black mark on our resume at this point in the season.

Costly loss! It will hurt our RPI and our seeding (if we make the tournament). PSU had given up 65 runs in their last 8 games!'

We need to win our last 5 B1G games!

IU's certainly not in position where in can afford losses like this, especially if Penn State takes the series.

This loss has already dropped us down to 31 in the RPI rankings and there are still plenty of game results yet to come in.

Yep can't play down to the competition like that. Let's take the last two and move on.

Hoosiers Drop Series Opener to Penn State, 5-2

BLOOMINGTON, Ind. – Indiana baseball (27-19-2, 10-8-1) ran into good starting pitching on Friday night, falling in its series opener to Penn State, 5-2.

Sophomore Jonathan Stiever went seven innings in the loss, allowing three runs on six hits while striking out seven and walking none. Stiever had his streak without allowing a run end at 20 innings.

Junior Logan Sowers put together a two-hit game, while sophomores Luke Miller and Ryan Fineman each drove in a run.

After a scoreless pair of innings for both teams, the Nittany Lions got on the board first in the third inning. Logan Goodnight tripled with one out and then scored on a balk to make it a 1-0 game. Then with two outs in the frame, Conlin Hughes homered to left field to extend the lead to two runs.

With one out in the fourth inning, senior Craig Dedelow worked a walk and then advanced to second on a single by Sowers. Then with two away, Fineman went the other way singling through the left side to plate Dedelow, cutting the PSU lead to 2-1.

The Nittany Lions rebounded in the fifth with a solo home run by Brett Davis to make it a 3-1 game.

Sophomore Matt Lloyd led off the top of the eighth with a double to the left centerfield gap. Things were looking promising for Indiana when the next batter, Miller, singled up the middle to score Lloyd and trim PSU's lead to 3-2. The Nittany Lions made a pitching change and the next three hitters were retired on a strikeout and pair of flyouts.

PSU added two insurance runs with two outs in the top of the ninth to make it a 5-2 game.

Indiana and Penn State are back in action on Saturday. First pitch is slated for 2:05 p.m. ET.

Go Hoosiers!

Yeah. Bad loss. Told my wife in third inning 'this is that game'. Hammering the ball early, just right at someone, every single time!

Their guy was as lemo said. His last pitch to finish off the seventh was 94!

Baseball isn't basketball, or football.... the best team doesn't always win... But that's why i love it! Win or lose i wanna be at the park!
