Our freshmen punter makes me nervous.

I sure hope Evans gets up to speed fast or we could have problems. The guy literally just started wearing a helmet a few months ago and has zero experience kicking in true football situations from what I understand. This could be very problematic for us if he struggles and I'm not talking about how far he kicks. Distance is one thing but he has to be able to handle the snaps and kick quickly under pressure. Screwups in this area are game killer/changers.

Our Australian kicker had no prior experience, either. I believe both went to a kicking camp.

No doubt he'll have a learning curve, but I don't think he'll be sent out to punt until he's ready.

Whitehead was quite literally in the exact same situation. He punted for us for 6 years.

He's certain to see the punt block scheme thrown at him until he makes them pay for it regularly and makes it clear it doesn't bother him... I figure he'll see it nearly once or twice every game this season...

It's important to remember that he's only the tip of the spear of the punt team... If the other 10 guys don't do their jobs it won't matter how cool Evans is under fire... Let's hope they're all ready...

I'd imagine the staff will be sending the heat all thru Fall camp...

The punt team and our first time D.C. learning on the job are my two biggest concerns...

not worried, and no doubt we have more than one punter on the team.

and i have zero problem with using one punter for long distance punts, and another for drop it inside the 10.

i'm surprised that isn't done more, especially since someone could make a specialty out of wedge play, instead of always using the same guy off the tee as with a wedge.

and you could probably find someone great at dropping it inside the 10 who doesn't have a big leg, who you wouldn't need a scholly for.

do we have tryouts for such?

and i don't mean just tryouts for punters in general, but tryouts just for wedge play specialists.

if not, i propose it.

I'm surprised that this kicking school doesn't actually have the kids wear helmets and uniforms while practicing. Seems a pretty simple thing for them to incorporate. His success will depend on the other 10 guys on the punt team and the blocking he gets.

Who knows - they might.

I think that kickers should be the easiest players for coaches to evaluate. Whether they be punters, field goal kickers or kickoff specialists it should be the same no matter what level of high school competition.

If there is one thing we have learned about CTA is we can rest easy knowing he understands how to put a team out on the field that performs on offense, defense and special teams. However it is he does it, be it recruiting, coaching staff, strength conditioning, team moral....whatever it is.....he gets it done. This is the first off-season I've not racked my brain on things I think the IU coach probably should be doing. Our guy with the reigns has it under control.

Special teams are always B1G, especially in season openers.

Indiana at Iowa

Good Kirk Ferentz teams are usually solid in these areas.

Iowa punter made his first football game punt last year. Was an empty stadium better or worse to step on a football field for the first time?

These Australian trained punters are the rage in the Big Ten.

Rutgers has a good one. Nebraska pulled in one from New Zealand trained in Australia.

Iowa's punter had never stepped into a game, until Purdue last year.
