Ouch - "Indiana couldn't guard a toddler on a Fisher-Price hoop"

Little harsh but pretty true - this team isn't going to have stops

But you can make up for a bad (mostly undermanned) defense with efficient offense. We are 10th in the nation in offensive efficiency.

I've had to start watching this team differently with different expectations (otherwise I would have broken my screen). Our best defense is a good offense. And since our best offense is our offense - when we lose it's usually ugly ;). I know, not rocket science but it's been a real adjustment for me watching games. I have given up expecting stops and more importantly watched time management and offense - some minor disruptions in defense become oh so important - making the wrong guy take a less high percentage shot is a win for this team (i.e. Michigan last second 3 point shot).

My perception last year (2-7 in close games?) was that we needed stops and I actually enjoyed watching end games more for some reason - thinking we had more of a chance to win - this year we are 7-1 in close games but I feel more frustrated after a win at times then I did a close loss last year - very bizarre.

I'm very proud of this team and enjoy watching them - but it's been a weird season for me - very weird.

Pretty cheap shot by Brennan

I'd like to see a toddler try to score on Yogi. DWS.

Of course, it's hyperbole, but that from an IU guy? I thought he would have been taught better than that.

Last year was WAY more frustrating for me

1. Turnovers, Turnovers, Turnovers
2. A lottery pick in the middle we couldn't get the ball to.
3. Yogi dribbling all over the place, because no one would move.
4. No one outside of Yogi who could shoot.

This team has a higher basketball IQ by far (and it's still not great...it's good) than last years team, and they knock down shots.

Hey...but they played defense, so our Kenpom #'s were better. ;-)

Does anyone know why Rivals screws up ESPN links?

No matter how you put it in, Rivals always turns ESPN links into https links, which messes up the formatting when you click on them.

Or is it just me?

I'm an IU guy.

And I'm jealous I didn't come up with that line first.

Our defense is historically bad. It's so bad, in fact, that despite being 2nd in the conference in scoring offense, we're still in the negative in points differential. Each of the rest of the top 7 teams in scoring offense has a positive scoring margin.

Anyway, it was kind of funny, I guess is my point.

I thought he was being polite. I can't think of words to describe how bad

the defense has been. I have visions of Kaminsky getting uncontested dunks because Holt and Williams fronted and jumped into the passing lanes... Lob and dunk ten times out of ten. Someone on the staff told them to do that!!!!!

Re: I thought he was being polite. I can't think of words to describe how bad

IU made Doyle look an All B1G guy. Our "defense" is embarrassing.

IU should forfeit every win with less than a margin of 10

That would not only set a progressive trend in NCAA basketball but also enforce a defensive orientation for coaching and assure that certain fans who think that D is more important than W are pacified.

As and IU guy...

...I would have thought IU players would have been taught to play better defense that what they have shown.

I must say that was funny! I hope we can show up and play

some good defense before it is all said and done. That comment sums up our defense in some games.

Re: As and IU guy...

AAU ball is not a good place to learn how to play better defense. In fact, it might be enlightening for someone to attempt to put together an all-freshmen, college defensive team.

Where would you begin? In effect, how many recruits can one name that were recruited for their defensive prowess?

culture of D actually is more important than any single win

programs that sustain success build a culture of D and the Ws follow. Please, name a perennial top 15 power that doesn't emphasize defense?

Like I said - perception ;)

I look at the real numbers and you are absolutely correct but I just felt more comfortable at the end of games - weird - very weird.

I'm guessing IU's +/- in the last 5 minutes of games is pretty terrible

IU has been fortunate to build 10-20 point leads at home that completely disappear in the last 5:00. These games that end up being very close according to the final score really shouldn't have been close games.

I mean, I'll take the W, but regularly seeing in-game stats/trends like "IU: 0 FGs last 4:30" as the lead shrinks from 14 to 4 is really frustrating. IU just can't close out games (with Maryland being the exception).

Re: I'm guessing IU's +/- in the last 5 minutes of games is pretty terrible

Iu is on borrowed time with escaping these close games. At some point terrible defense will come back to haunt you.

Re: 263 teams full of AAU products are playing better defense

I'm talking young players, that's why I asked anyone to name an all-freshman defensive team. When those 263 teams all play in the Big-10, your point will have some substance, until then.....not hardly.

Who said anything about AAU?

This team is 3/4's of the way through the season. We don't have an AAU program or AAU coach. We have a highly compensated coach at a B1G conference school that should be teaching these things...

You don't need an all freshman defensive team.

We have two sophomores and a junior playing major minutes...and most don't seem to know how to play basic defensive principles.

help me understand, please

If none of the freshmen are trained by the feeder system to play proper defense, then it's up to the college coaches to evaluate talent and then coach proper defense in a good system.

So let's say that its true that nobody is recruited for defense. I'll let you roll with that. Now that the players are on their respective rosters and being coached up, CTC has his team playing worse defense than 263 teams. 263 other coaches recruited their players for reasons other than defense, but have somehow managed to get them to play better defense than CTC.

plus, IU's defense ranks last in the B1G according to kenpom

By a wide margin. At least according to my quick glance through the B1G teams, nobody was below 200 except IU.
