I'm kinda a nostalgic small school / small town, "map guy", wondering where these towns are, and what makes them tick. There was an ESPN doc on 6-man Texas football the other day that I watched, then I found this cool map that some guy had created for Texas football.

https://www.google.com/maps/d/viewe...&ll=31.31325536519058,-100.13421070569166&z=6

You can basically click and see the locations of every school in the state based on size.

I saw a similar map on the IHSAA website, but because of consolidation in Indiana (I guess), it's not as cool as I guess it was back in the day, when there were 900 or so HS's instead of 300 or so.

Anyway, I started wondering about these small towns like Smithville (which is nearby where I live now), and Oolitic (down the road), and where all these teams were. What were their "Sectionals"? When did they ever win "Sectionals"? Did they even have a team?

Which leads to my "rabbit hole" last night that kept me busy from 9pm til 1am (and I only got to the "C's"!)...

I found this site that lists every historic Sectional Champion...

Then just started google mapping all of these little towns. I started in the A's, and looked up locations of school that had been consolidated.. Tons of them. Little one stop towns like Hickory. Just amazing doing the street view and seeing what the towns look like now. On some occasions, you might find an old school that looks like it's either now unused, or an elementary school. One in awhile, you could see the town "Rec Center", and know what it must have once been.

Nostalgic, for sure.

Maybe one day I'll try and do a map like that guy did in Texas with all the historic Indiana Sectional Champions, Regional Champions, etc...

talk about a time waste. :)

Question though...

back in the 20's through 50's....how many teams were typically in a Sectional? How many Sectionals were there?

At 900 teams, you'd have to have 15 team Sectionals just to get down to 64 teams....

You'd have to win 10 straight to win State,,,right?
