That's ashame. He stuck it out after contracting COVID19 but I guess he doesn't see a future here... I was hoping things would work out for him...

I wonder what the total number of departures will reach by the time we play Illinois next year? It is quite possible 40% of our team will have changed since we played Purdue.
I don't mind high turnover, I actually think it's good for a team overall because you get more "pitches" to swing at with new recruits coming in vs current players that didn't pan out as hoped (not talking specifically about Feeney, just speaking broadly).
I do have some lingering anxiety about how young the team remains though because we lost several older kids who should have been expected to be big contributors (e.g., Marshall, Miller, Bjornson, & Burgess).
I don't mind it either. In most of these cases it means a younger guy has moved past them, imho.
Aside from a handful of players, most in the portal didn't contribute or get a lot of playing time. I think our additions via the portal are more significant than the losses.
...and the end #'s probably not much different than other P5 programs...
After coming off the season we just had that's not really a bad thing...
The Transfer Portal may very well turn out to be one of the best things thats ever happened to INDIANA Football...
I really don’t know if the transfer portal is good/bad. However in my opinion I think the number in the portal will gradually decrease over the years. I would guess many don’t find a new home and regret their decision.
As a season ticket holder for 56 of the past 58 yrs (missed two years while in the Army), a friend who also has had season tickets all that time used to discuss back and forth -WE GOT HURT BY GRADUATION - not enough graduated!

Sorry to see him go and wish him well in his ongoing battle with Myocarditis.
I think Feeney's reason's for entering the Transfer Portal have nothing to do with inability to "develop" or live up to the ability he demonstrated before coming to IU. ..... Myocarditis is some serious stuff and can easily cause long-lasting heart problems. I'm sure his ability to function as well as he did before he caught it, let alone play football, is playing a huge factor in his leaving.
Feeney's unfortunate situation is, in my eyes, much different than all of the others entering the Portal. I hope all of the players entering the Portal reach their goals... but Feeney, I'm wishing for a little bit more.
How would playing somewhere else help with his myocarditis? I could understand if it led to his retirement from football, put entering the portal implies he will continue playing somewhere else.
Then you don't understand what Myocarditis does.... So, I'll defer to my wife, who is a Vascular Specialist here in Indy...
He probably doesn't have the same strength and endurance he had before and that's from several factors... the virus probably caused some damage to the heart making it pump less blood... He probably was not able to work out for several months and even then he would have come back at a much reduced level. Maybe he's back to 85-95% of his old self but it probably effects his play at a Power 5 level... He's already lost about 2 years due to this condition so playing at a smaller school with lesser competition might fit his physical ability a little more. Who knows, but there's no way to know.... I just don't think questioning him for leaving, especially considering his life the last two years, is acceptable.
You have no idea how severe his condition was or wasn’t. This type of speculation is unfair to everyone involved.

I never claimed in my post to know the severity of his condition... but my wife sure as hell knows ten times better than you that it's very possible for him to be in the situation I described.
I use "possible" because what I described, through my wife, is typical of Myocarditis. Not the same for all cases but very typical.
If you had taken the time to read every word of my post you'd understand I'm trying to illustrate that Feeney's situation is probably a little different than the rest of the transfers.... Unfair?... You're crazy... Again stay in your lane.

I like that, my wife knows more than you or your wife put together! Vascular specialist, a cardiovascular surgeon or medical or procedural cardiologist? Maybe infectious disease specialist since this was a viral myocarditis. Unless she has access to the individual case all is speculation.
Has anyone seen the stats? What is the average number of portal entries and how many actually leave?
Just glancing at other Big 10 Teams our rate of entries in the portal is higher. One influence that also might be impacting our rate, is having to get to 85 scholarships.
Jsenleo: Your description, er....your interpretation of your wife's description, of Myocarditis is correct IN GENERAL. Myocarditis can in fact cause long-term loss of cardiac function. At other times it causes short-term decreased cardiac function that later improves back to normal.
The problem with your assessment of what myocarditis CAN cause is that you applied it to a specific situation. More importantly, if you were correct, IU should fire its medical staff immediately for allowing a player with decreased cardiac function to play football at their institution.
Feeney contracted myocarditis at the beginning of the pandemic when we knew very little about the virus' effects. He was not hospitalized, he was evaluated in an ER. He did not require a transplant as some myocarditis patients may have. Instead, he recovered cardiac function. He was cleared by our outstanding medical staff to fully participate. And he did participate for the next two seasons.
If he has heart dysfunction and his myocarditis was the reason for leaving IU, then he clearly should not be playing football at any level. I am confident that this is not the case.
