Hoosiers Defeat OSU to Win Series; Will Face Minnesota in Tournament Opener

COLUMBUS, Ohio – Indiana baseball (32-20-2, 14-9-1 Big Ten) closed out the 2017 regular season with a 4-3 victory over the Ohio State Buckeyes, 4-3.

Indiana will be the No. 6 seed in the Big Ten Tournament and will face the Minnesota Golden Gophers to open the tournament on Wednesday at 10 a.m. at Bart Kaufman Field.

Indiana collected 10 hits in the game, with sophomore Matt Lloyd leading the way with three hits and an RBI in the win. Sophomore Logan Sowers picked up his ninth multi-hit game in his last 12 games going 2-for-5 with an RBI. Senior Tony Butler and freshman Jeremy Houston also had two-hit games for the Hoosiers.

Freshman Cal Krueger picked up his fourth win of the season, going six inning of five-hit ball, allowing just one earned run. Sophomore Matt Lloyd picked up the save, as he went 1.2 innings giving up just one hit.

Butler led off the game with a single through the left side. Then with no outs, Sowers' hot-hitting continued with a double to right center to give the Hoosiers an early 1-0 lead. Ohio State answered when it got a runner on third with one out, who eventually scored on a sac fly to even up the score.

In the second, the Hoosiers got one more to get the lead back. An infield hit by freshman Matt Gorski eventually got him on second base with two outs, where Houston followed with his RBI single to right to make it a 2-1 game before the weather delay.

Following the weather delay and 4.5 scoreless frames, Indiana put two more runs on the board in the seventh inning. Houston led off a sing and Butler advanced him on a sacrifice bunt. Lloyd then doubled to plate Houston and then scored later in the frame on a wild pitch to make it 4-1 in favor of the Hoosiers.

Ohio State's Jalen Washington made the game closer in the bottom of the eight with a two-run home run to left, trimming the lead to 4-3.

Despite the leadoff guy getting on in the ninth for the Buckeyes, Lloyd forced three-straight outs to pick up

The Hoosiers closed the regular season with a 32-20-1 overall record and a 14-9-1 mark in Big Ten play. The Big Ten Tournament, hosted by Indiana, is a double elimination tournament that will run from Wednesday, May 24 to Sunday, May 28.

Hoosiers get No. 6 seed, will face Gophers in tournament
by Mike Miller

Indiana’s initial postseason itinerary is set.

The Hoosiers will open next week’s Big Ten Tournament at Bart Kaufman Field as the No. 6 seed, facing the No. 3 seed Minnesota Golden Gophers on Wednesday at 10 a.m.

Indiana won a three-game series with Minnesota in mid-April, dropping a Friday night contest 11-0, before bouncing back with wins of 13-12 and 4-0.

The Hoosiers are 90-30-1 all-time at Bart Kaufman Field, which opened in 2013.

Nebraska, which won the first two games and tied the series finale at Bart Kaufman Field in April, won the Big Ten regular season title.

This year marks the first time that a Big Ten school will host the tournament since 2010, when Ohio State brought the event to Columbus. The tournament will return to TD Ameritrade Park in Omaha from 2018 to 2022.

Bart Kaufman Field also hosted NCAA Tournament regionals in 2013 and 2014.

Following IU’s tournament-opening game at 10 a.m., No. 2 Michigan will face No. 7 Northwestern at 1:30 p.m.

Top-seed Nebraska will face No. 8 Purdue at 5 p.m. and No. 4 Iowa will square off with No. 5 Maryland at 8:30 p.m.

Big Ten Network will broadcast each game.

That win meant nothing. Seeds were set.

It's too late to 'set the pitching staff up'. We will be going with what it has been for the last 3 weekends.

Home field means nothing when you have a 10am start.... maybe a thousand there... vs. 3 had it been the night game.

Win the first game and allow the fans to have some say.... maybe on thurs home field could matter.

Sorry. That probably came off bad! Hoosier baseball is my passion! We are at every home/ close game.

Frustrated we gave up the 5 seed on Friday night.... meaning i probably have to miss wed.... and we forfeited a huge advantage playing the early game with no fans.

Momentum in baseball is as good as the next starter.... and we've not been good outta the gate.

It might have meant nothing as far as seeds for the Big Ten tournament, but every win is important with trying to get into the NCAA tourney. We can't lose 2 of 3 to a team that is at bottom of the standings at this point.

The start times are rough but I feel like we have a better chance of actually playing on Saturday being on this side of the bracket. Had we got the 5 seed we would be dealing with the Maryland Ace and Nebraska instead of Minnesota in the first game and Michigan.
