Opponents have figured how to beat Indiana. Play good defense inside and challenge Indiana to shoot from way out.
Maryland and Indiana have loads of similar statistics. Except IU gets to the line better. Notably, neither shoots the 3 well. Maryland is known as a very good rebounding team.
One other thing is that their PG Cowan is a senior. He is very good. Well, he is very good when he moves the ball and doesn't overdribble.
UMD lost two recent games. Why? What can IU learn from those UMD losses? Penn. State beat UMD by playing a great defense. Seton Hall beat UMD by playing a great defense. Any questions?
So there it is. Indiana has to keep trying to get inside. If Indiana can draw the fouls then they need to make them, too. One of our guards, or a couple of them, need to defend Cowan like Penn. State did.
On offense, Indiana has to move without the ball. The spacing must be good all game. Assists, come on guys, pass the ball to the open players! Does anybody know how to screen? And value the ball like Wisconsin does, duh. Brunk, you don't have to go outside to screen and then try to fight back to defend in the middle every play. And on defense, IU cannot leave that one poor-shooting UMD player to get set beyond the 3. Draw fouls on their big and get him outathere.
Of course, IU won't do all of that. IU has a problem at our PG position at times. And our wings...have really bad stretches when their brains take siestas. And opponents now know how to beat us. It is at Maryland...being a road game...so that is in UMD's favor. But there is one very real wild card. The twins will be leaving UMD and their mother is ticked at UMD's head coach Turgeon. I mean real mad. Does this disrupt UMD's team much? Stay tuned after these messages:...…..
Here is what I predict. Indiana grows up.
Indiana 70; Maryland 68
OK it is more hope than what I think. But, I am an optimist.
