I'm currently in Tokyo due to work, but was just in NYC a few days ago. I'm willing to offer any advice I can, although some of the posts on here have been really helpful. A few things I would absolutely recommend:

  1. Use the Subway as your primary mode of transport. With google maps app, etc it's incredibly easy to navigate. Also, I was with my wife and 10 year old son and never once felt unsafe.
  2. See Times Square, but don't stay in Times Square. See above, commuting is so easy in NYC but it's not my favorite place in the city...but something to be seen. I stayed there last week but I wasn't paying and didn't make the reservations.
  3. Go see a show even if you don't think you're a "show guy". It's worth it. Also, my favorite show is Stomp! At the Orpheum Theatre near NYU.
  4. If you eat at a chain restaurant while you are there then you deserve a punch in the face. Literally every block is littered with awesome places to eat, so try something new. I've found Yelp to be especially spot-on and helpful in NYC.

Finally, this is why I was lucky enough to have a trip to NYC someone else picked up the tab for. This here is my kid.
