Maryland Advances Past No. 22 Indiana in Penalty Kicks

COLUMBUS, Ohio – The Maryland Terrapins advanced in the Big Ten Tournament semifinals over the No. 22 Indiana Hoosiers in penalty kicks on Friday afternoon in Columbus, Ohio. The match ended in a 1-1 draw, with the Terrapins advancing, 3-2, in six rounds of penalty kicks.

With the draw, Indiana's record moves to 12-4-3 on the season, while Maryland goes to 9-5-5 on the year.

Phil Fives notched his third goal of the season for the Hoosiers, while Derek Creviston had his first assist of the year. In goal, Colin Webb had five saves for the Hoosiers.

After Maryland took an early, 1-0 lead in the 10th minute, the Hoosiers answered right back just three minutes later.

Off a corner kick, the ball fell to Creviston, who turned and cracked a shot that was blocked. The rebound came to Fives, who blasted a left-footed shot from 16-yard out that deflected off a Maryland defender to the top-left corner, notching the match at 1-1.

In the 40th minute, the Hoosiers had a chance to take the lead headed in to the half. Working from left to right, Tanner Thompson cracked a right-footed rocket from the top of the box, forcing the Maryland keeper to push the shot over the cross bar to safety.

At halftime, the match was tied at 1-1. In the first 45 minutes, shots were even at 6-6, with IU having the advantage in corner kicks, 3-0.

In the 56th minute, the Hoosiers nearly struck again on a corner kick. On a failed Maryland clearance, the ball bounced back in to the six-yard box. Billy McConnell made an athletic attempt at goal, but his windmill kick was saved by the Terrapins' goalkeeper.

Later in the half, Femi Hollinger-Janzen nearly put Indiana in the lead in the 83rd minute. Running down the right side, Hollinger-Janzen's shot from eight-yards out just missed left of the far post.

As the clock wound down on regulation, Webb came up with the biggest save of the season for the Hoosiers. With one second left, Maryland's Eryk Williamson had a shot, but Webb came up with a diving, one-handed save to send the match in to overtime.

In the first overtime, the Hoosiers nearly had the match winner in the 97th minute. Off a cross in from Ben Maurey, McConnell chested the ball beautifully to Hollinger-Janzen, who's scissor kick from 12-yards just missed left of the far post.

Hollinger-Janzen had another opportunity in the 99th minute, but his right-footed shot from 16-yard out was saved at the near post. IU dominated the first overtime, out-shooting the Terrapins, 5-0. Still tied at 1-1, the match headed to a second overtime.

In the second overtime, IU had a pair of great chances off a corner kick in the 103rd minute. Off the cross, Hollinger-Janzen's first shot was saved. The rebound came back to the senior, who's second look was blocked by a Maryland defender.

After 110 minutes of play, the match remained tied at 1-1 and headed to penalty kicks to decide who would advance to the Big Ten Championship match.

In penalty kicks, Indiana put in Christian Lomeli at goalkeeper looking to advance. After two rounds, IU took a 2-1 lead when Lomeli made a great diving save.

Despite the heroics of Lomeli, who totaled three saves in PK's, the Hoosiers were unable to convert on their last four penalty kicks, and Maryland advanced after six rounds, 3-2.

The No. 22 Indiana Hoosiers will now wait until Monday to see the team's NCAA Tournament draw. The NCAA Division I Men's Soccer Selection Show will air this Monday, November 16th at 1 p.m. ET on NCAA.com.
