New Coach Choices

He and his staff’s activity was monitored and thus they found the illegal phone calls. Short of having someone with him 24 hours a day, what does having him “on a leash” even mean??
Well, for instance, it would seem that the monitoring of his contacts was reactive rather than proactive. Was there a procedure in place for him to follow before he was to make a contact...or were they just reviewing phone/text records after the fact?

When he made a contact with a recruit, was it just him (or one of his assistants) and the recruit one on one...or was a compliance officer copied?

Any helicopter parent worth their salt can tell you that it's also quite possible to limit contacts to/from specific phone numbers. Was that done or looked into? That technology very much existed at that time. And it's even better today.

Did they record calls and have transcripts made? And, if so, was he aware of this?

No coach ever is going to get a 10 year $100 million contract off the bat. That is patently absurd and it completely handcuffs your entire athletic department for years. These guys like Calipari and Coach K are getting big extensions (after multiple years of success) as it literally makes the impossible to be poached. And while I think Beard would do extremely well in Bloomington, guaranteeing him $100 million means you're stuck with him regardless. Our friends to the south are finding out what its like to be handcuffed to a large coaching contract.
Our friends to the south? Like who?

Purdue and Jeff Brohm. Handcuffed to a massive deal and they're stuck with him the next 2-3 years regardless what happens.
The economic impact of Brohm at Purdue very likely justifies that deal. Their attendance increased dramatically as a result of him being coach. Whether he’s the right guy in terms of the long term direction of their program is to be determined, though it’s universally accepted that football fixes are much more difficult than basketball ones. What is his buy out if Pu decides to move on? Knowing that is the only way one could determine whether they’re stuck.

PU isn’t south of anyone. Did you mean UK and now trying to back track because you realize it was an asinine comment?

PU handcuffed in football (really???) doesn’t have much to do with what we were talking about. You meant UK and cal.

“Coach” was trying to make a point without any facts, then he had to pivot when he was “caught”. Funny.

What company, in any area of business, would hire someone they would have to babysit like that??? You never hire someone you can’t trust. Especially when you’re paying them north of $3 million per year. This is just some ridiculous mental gymnastics you’re using to try and talk yourself into Bruce Pearl.

I'm not talking about Calipari. He's job security is nowhere in question. Purdue gave Jeff Brohm an enormous contract (to prevent him from leaving) that makes him impossible to fire for another 2-3 years regardless of his teams performance. Firing Archie after this season to try and hire Chris Beard would cost IU $14 million just to get rid of the current coach, another $20 million just to get Beard to leave Lubbock, and then at your outrageous proposal to give Chris Beard a 10 yr/$100 million contract, you're looking at nearly $125 million before he ever coaches game. Unless IU recently robbed the Federal Reserve, it ain't happening.

I am just gonna chalk this one up as a big L for you and move on. So much stupid in what you said. Still haven’t responded to why you said friends to the south? Custodian strikes again.

Seriously?

All kinds of companies strictly manage customer and prospect contacts, record and transcribe calls, proactively monitor digital communications, have internal financial controls to prevent fraud and theft, etc.

How much do you know about casino security? They watch their own people more closely than they watch the gamblers.

I can see where a coach (especially a shifty one) might not willingly subject himself to these conditions. But that’s why I think these are the kinds of controls the NCAA should institute. Their compliance offices have quite obviously failed to mitigate the skullduggery.

I got a fix for you, anytime a coach is caught with major infractions, he can never again coach at the NCAA level.

Well, that idea's been thrown out there for years (including from Urban Meyer!) -- to no avail. Your guess is as good as mine as to why it's never gained traction. I certainly wouldn't have a problem with it. But is the NCAA really ready to give the death penalty to some of its most prominent names? Apparently not.

So you wouldn’t have a problem with it, but are pushing to hire someone who cheats???

I wouldn't have a problem with banning coaches, but they haven't done that. Sampson's coaching and has a great team. Pitino's coaching. I could go on.

So, yeah, as long as they're going to continue to allow that, I'd be ecstatic if we hired Pearl, so long as we kept a leash on him.

You’re delusional with your “leash” deal

Why would Few leave Gonzaga? I don’t see that. How about Fife, Alford, Lewis? Need an IU guy to understand what IU is about!
Two with little or no experience and one fired twice at major schools. Would love to have an Indiana guy but I don't know of any that would be in position to come here. It is not the 70s 80s or early 90s and Knight or his clone is not coming tbrough the door.

Maybe. But in what way?

That a school would do it? Could do it? That it would work if they tried? That a coach would willingly sign up for such an arrangement? All of the above?

Yeah, I doubt an individual school could do it and, even if they attempted to, no coach would accept it.

But I think it could work if it was mandated by the NCAA for any coach who “qualifies.” You want to coach a team again? Here are the conditions...at any member institution.

With buyouts it makes it tough but Matta, Belien, Marshall, Fife, Lewis, all could be easily hired.

Are you referring to UK? As in they are in trouble that they gave him a lifetime contract? You can’t be that stupid, no way, right?

UK is having a down year, and no one would be shocked if they started streaking and made the tourney, No1, well except morons. Before that they went to elite 8, sweet 16, elite 8, round of 32, undefeated till final four.

Coach Cal is the elite of the elite and any Kentucky fan clamoring to get rid of him should be called custodian as well.

Further, when cal came to UK he was made the highest paid coach at the time, that is why they got him.
You are a moron. Cal is a recruiter not coach. Let’s see how well he would do if he had players ranked in the 100 range instead of top 20.

Calipari can coach. Is he the best ever? Probably not. But he’s an excellent coach, especially defensively.

What do you base this on? The fact he never has taken sub 100 ranked players and turned them into anything. I would like to see him take a team like the one Indiana has and turn it into a final four.

Listen shit stain. I paid for every dime of my college, I have been working since 12, and am sick of old white racist POS like you.

Crean in the stretch of 3 years had around 10 player incidents resulting in arrest. Every other week on ESPN.com was another headline of IU players getting arrested. Hanner got arrested multiple times, once for driving the wrong way down Kirkwood while absolutely hammered and could have killed your grand daughter. Emmit and Davis played drunk frogger on 17th street and they were close to killing one another while drunk. Hanner after getting kicked out, came back and continued to party with the new recruits (TB) and got arrested again. How bout the WHITE EYE that Crean left? Where is the rage over that?

Not one ****ing arrest under Sampson. You think we aren't gonna read about Hanner getting deported soon? Bassett went down the wrong road AFTER he left IU, while he was here he got high and won basketball games. Didn't undermine his coach, that were the players under Crean. Like your captain (yogi) trying to get in to Kilroys underage little 5 week. NO RESPECT for the university or coach.

Where is your rage for the thugs under Crean you racist POS.
love when white racists call out other white racists! Keep up the good work

I could have spelled it out more I guess. Older white people that are racist towards blacks I believe deserve to die.

That way you cant take it as being racist against old white folks. but lets be real, when people do what you are doing it is a huuuuuuuuuuuuuuuge stretch to try to act like hypocrisy. They are just getting away from the point at hand, and this is there way of arguing it. Really dislike this play, and happens a lot today.
Stfu

No one could take a team like IUs current one to the Final Four. If you’ve been watching at all, you’ll see what everyone else does: We’re not that talented and we’re not that good.

As for Calipari (or any other coach), name all the great ones that won at a high level without extremely talented players. Hint: There aren’t any.

Our next coach, whenever that is, should either have strong ties to the program or be a very successful coach. Someone that did well at a mid major or made a Final 4 isn't good enough.

I thought Archie would recruit mental and physical toughness. Leal, Galloway, and Geronimo seem to have toughness but it is hard to see that early. Archie needs a leader on the court. Leadership on the court and players that dig deep and refuse to accept losing is the biggest failures to this point in recruiting.

and someone that can shoot the damned ball in the hoop on a regular basis

I seriously think Stevens would struggle at Indiana. . The dude hates the recruiting part
Stevens is a good coach for sure and wouldn't turn him down . He caught lightning in a bottle 2 years and I know it took skill as well. Not sure had he stayed at Butler he was ever going to do more, great story taking a small school to back to back finals, he had Hayward for one trip and he wasnt a absolute monster in college. I don't see him ever coming back to college. He won't need the money. A lot of boston fans are not real happy but don't think he is going anywhere. He would have to hire recruiters for sure.

You are crazy.
You are crazy. Knight swept shit under the rug all the time. My sister dated a player on the 87 roster. She had party photos all over the place.(some at various bars) Jay Edwards loved his weed. The rest partied as much as any. My other sister best friend almost married Eric Anderson. They partied a lot. They had a leash but not as short as you think.

If it comes to looking at coaches, Marshall, Matta, Beard.

I'd at least take a strong look at Fife and Lewis.

And outside soup du jour guys, Pat Kelsey is doing a great job. I have no idea if he is good enough though.
If Matta was healthy I would vote for him to be IU's next coach. He can recruit at a high level and his teams are very competitive.

Greg Marshall, Steve Alford, Thad Matta, Dane Fife, Rick Pitino, Bruce Pearl, Randy Wittman, Brad Stevens, John Beilein
I saw an interview AJ Guyton had with Steve Alford. Alford said the four times the IU job was open he didn't receive one call. I found that hard to believe they wouldn't even call him. I am not even saying he is right for IU. It was just amazing not one call.

I think if you put all of the stories together a timeline emerges. Lots of things happened at different times that hindered the marriage. You had AD’s and Presidents coupled with Alfords baggage hindering the relationship. It just wasn’t meant to be.

SA made several inquiries via people at IU with whom he had relationships. It went nowhere, and probably ate up most of Rick Greenspan’s 9 IU lives. SA didn’t have nearly enough friends in high places to ever get the ball rolling on any sort of candidacy, and he was never offered the job. It was never close to that.

I'd add another realistic name to that list ... Ben Howland. 3 FF4's and I believe he was fired after going 25-10 in his last year. Much like Matta, underappreciated when that's a down year record
