New Coach Choices

If it was such a great gig, why were the top coaches not interested when the vacancies were there?

However, I feel It's still a very good job but not as desireable as many here think it is.
You almost never see coaches going from one P5 school to another unless they were fired. What other top coaches are you referring to? Is IU as good of a job as the Boston Celtics? Absolutely not.

However, to say coaches go to IU to end their careers is hilariously wrong.

I worked at Kilroys at 18 and had a VIP card when I was 19. I was not an Indiana Mr. basketball, McDonalds All American basketball player for IU.

What I said was, by Yogi doing that, was undermining the coach and he didn't respect him or he didn't have control of the program. Are you arguing that?
Definitely. Kids are kids. And there are degrees of infractions. Yogi being stupid and trying to get into a bar (my 50 year old self if I was famous would have been able to logically realize this was a dumbass move, my 20 year old self not so much...) doesn’t register very high up on the infraction list. I worked at Kilroys also when I was 19 and played keys for a less
Than average cover band in 1990-91 just
To have a method to get into Jake’s. Definitely never pondered my explanation of the excise cops made a visit. Today I would ponder the consequences.

So did Knight have control of his players? They partied as much as any including rolling left handers. They got caught numerous times and swept under the rug.

What's your point? Neither situation was the same. Wilson was "pushed" out and Davis ended his by his own resignation.

Total speculation on your part.

It wasn't a sure thing he would've been fired. You're speculating. Not saying you would've been wrong but you seem to easily dismiss the Herbert factor. If you were anywhere close to Bloomington and the campus at the time, the temperature was no where close to what you think it might have been. Davis decided his own fate. End of story.
It was a sure thing. Absolutely, positively, undoubtedly sure. Mike Davis was leaving at the end of that season. It was a sure thing.

Knight had Bloomington under control yes, ha.

scary but true.

Yogi was on espn.com. You don’t see that at good programs because they have a handle on it. We had 6 or 7 of these in such a short time frame. There was no respect for crean or the program. Wasn’t an isolated incident.

How do you know BK had Bloomington “under control”, especially since you weren’t around for the BK years?

good point. I have a lot less knowledge of this times and have to rely on older friends for second hand information. Would you disagree did he not have the pulse of Bloomington?

Not sure what you mean by that phrase. If you’re suggesting that he knew everything going with his players, that would be an emphatic “no”.

Would zeke try to go to bars when he was under 21?
Lets just say that most players during BKs time at IU led active social lives. No one had cell phones with cameras, and rides were often provided in lieu of a night in the Monroe County Hilton. To answer your question, getting into bars under age then was far easier than it is today.

The players were much more afraid of ramifications of getting in trouble with the police under Knight than Crean. Thats the point I am making. Are you arguing that point?

You have it backward. Players were much more afraid of BK than they were of the cops. They weren’t afraid of the cops in the Crean era, and they didn’t respect TC because all he did was talk.

This^^^

Plus, in general, cops for the most part were much more lenient back then they are today. This of course because the police weren’t demonized like they are today. Wasn’t all that uncommon for a cop back then to offer a ride home to someone who had been drinking to much.

Maybe I wrote it wrong, but ya thats what I meant. Players were scared as hell of the ramifications from Knight if they got in trouble with the cops.

I am not a democrat. I live in the country and own more guns and ammo than you could ever dream of. Your stupid little brain puts people into categories by a few posts. Ol boy is a racist. I see it all the time in rural America. Indiana is particularly bad. Slurs and talking down on black people is very everyday talk for a large population of people still. Racism has been, and still is, a huge part of this country. Only way to get it to change is talk about it and make people uncomfortable. Glad to do that at any time of any day.
"Only way to get it to change is talk about it and make people uncomfortable".

Make who uncomfortable? You see it all the time in rural America? Tell you what....go hiking in Gary...day or night, you pick the street. Then come back and lecture us about "rural America", and its racism. To your point....race is not a topic of conversation in America...it is only a topic of lecture.

I have been to Gary multiple times. In college i was a manager for the IU telefund. Befriended quite a few folks from Gary, many of which I keep in touch with to this day. Went to one party, that I’ll never forget. “Get in where you fit in” man, thanks for the memories! shoutout to my man Jovan for taking me.

Oh and make White people uncomfortable talking about racism. Black people know all about it lol.

So you had an escort and went to a black party as a white guy? And who hasn't done that? I went to Leon Spinks birthday party...yep, the only white guy there. I had an escort just like you did. Not the same as walking the streets. Walk through Gary without Jovan....and get back to me. "Oh, and make white people uncomfortable talking about racism"....another lecture......and they are all the same. A real conversation would require some honesty about responsibility which every human being must accept....that isn't going to happen in the PC hell in which we currently live.

I usually start that honest conversation with white folks and tell them I have worked in over 15 states for energy companies and my primary job is to talk to land owners and get them to sign documents. I have had thousands of interactions with landowners, not one has been black. You know because for the most part when the US patented land, blacks were slaves or shortly there after around the late 1800’s when blacks were killed for being successful.

there is a distinct advantage for white men in this country, being given land just a few generations ago, being one of the biggest. While blacks worked that ground for future generations of whites to prosper.

Listen shit stain. I paid for every dime of my college, I have been working since 12, and am sick of old white racist POS like you.

Crean in the stretch of 3 years had around 10 player incidents resulting in arrest. Every other week on ESPN.com was another headline of IU players getting arrested. Hanner got arrested multiple times, once for driving the wrong way down Kirkwood while absolutely hammered and could have killed your grand daughter. Emmit and Davis played drunk frogger on 17th street and they were close to killing one another while drunk. Hanner after getting kicked out, came back and continued to party with the new recruits (TB) and got arrested again. How bout the WHITE EYE that Crean left? Where is the rage over that?

Not one ****ing arrest under Sampson. You think we aren't gonna read about Hanner getting deported soon? Bassett went down the wrong road AFTER he left IU, while he was here he got high and won basketball games. Didn't undermine his coach, that were the players under Crean. Like your captain (yogi) trying to get in to Kilroys underage little 5 week. NO RESPECT for the university or coach.

Where is your rage for the thugs under Crean you racist POS.

Hey there fella. Tone it down a little bit.

You have the communication skills of a fifth grader. I doubt any of what you’re saying is true.

lol. Ya? Since we have never actually spoken to one another or communicated anyway other than text. I’ll let you think whatever you would like my man. Everything I say is true. Always.

You have to be kidding putting Pitino on your list.
1. Thad Matta because I’m sick and tired of us overlooking the excellent coaches coming out of Butler. 2. Beilein, though older, is a helluva coach and recruiter and could be a great bridge to a future up and comer. 3. And please, no more experiments with coaches who have no idea how tough it is to coach at the B1G level.
I would think Crean & Archie both had a pretty good idea what it takes to coach in the B1G from their stints at B1G schools under very successful coaches.

How about Norman Dale . He's like 100 years old now , but heard he would like to take one last shot at coaching . Maybe he could get Shooter to come along , and work with our guys on free throws . They could run the picket fence .

if it ever happens please let the rest of us know so we can watch!!

if he goes to another game I’ll go out of my way to make it happen. Hell I’ll walk into nicks and yell Hawaii is a looooooser go hoosiers.

you don’t know me very well, I have less of a filter in real life.

Jesus the other old man that wants to fight me. Shouldnt you be taking a nap? Why do you follow me like a female dog. Go ask your buddies at the retirement home about me!

Fight you? Sean, what would that accomplish? I'm pushing 70, you've embarrassed yourself enough already.

Far far different being the head coach than an assistant. Just no comparison regarding responsibility, pressure, media bs, closing with recruits, pressure from administration, alums, etc. Crean and Archie are exhibits 1a and 1b for appearing so unprepared for head coach responsibilities at such a high level.

WTF is actually wrong with you? Meds, drugs or what? You are on your 3rd cavanag in what 3 days now?

meds and drugs are the same thing. People get butthurt on a free internet chat room, this is my 13th name. This gives me giggles in this shitty covid where I can’t go socialize and go to games.
Don’t take the internet that serious.
