Mata Hari was shot after blowing a kiss at the French firing squad who executed her for accusations of being a spy.
As far as spies go, few of them lived a life as fabulous as Mata Hari. She began her life as a stage dancer in Paris, but during World War I she was embroiled in an espionage ploy by the Deuxième Bureau, France's external military intelligence agency.
In 1916 she was told to spy on Germany for France in exchange for seeing a Russian pilot who was the love of her life. A year later the Deuxième Bureau intercepted German messages that described a German spy who matched Mata Hari's description.
On February 13, 1917, Mata Hari was arrested at the Hotel Elysée Palace and put on trial for the crime of spying for Germany, something that the French claimed cost the lives of 50,000 soldiers. When she was placed in front of the firing squad on October 15, 1917 she refused a blindfold and blew a kiss to her executioners.
