This team today shows that they don't have mental toughness. They couldn't come back after a great effort against Duke and put this kind of effort in the first half. Hearing Miller in the pre game show made me feel pretty good. He said the last couple of days of practice was very good and thought they prepared well.

Some the players are obviously not mentally ready to play. Coaching can only do so much. Either player comes mentally prepared to play or they don't.

It must be nice being a Purdue fan when it comes to mental toughness. How come they aren't intimated by their first BT road game of the season? As bad as IU looks, we are only down 10, with the ball and 16 min. left. College basketball is down as our my hopes for this team, this season.

Iu should hire me as the head coach then for $250,000.00 a month.
If any player took any shot that wasnt from a drive\ post up ... They would be benched immediately awaiting harsh practice penalties.

This team is so successful when they do just that.. But its like the blind leading the blind

As was commented after Duke:
Will IU bring the same intensity each game? Those expecting that are going to be disappointed this year.

The reality of this team is that they lost to ISU at home by almost 30 points. Inconsistent effort coupled with inconsistent shooting is an ugly combination leading to disappointment and as if that isn't bad enough, Michigan isn't that good.

That is what SOFT means

Simplistic solutions don't usually work.

Are you saying you'd take a player out of a game for an early stupid turnover and not put him back in? Wouldn't we be playing players at the end of the bench by the end of the first half if we did that?

Are you going to post this in every thread the rest of the year, or just after every loss? What will be the event that causes you to move on? Do you feel you’ve made some extraordinary observation that a team may be more intense playing the #1 team at home as opposed to other road games, etc?

No. I won't be posting that after every game. I posted a couple extra times to make sure that the dense posters like you understood this. Of course, in your world, Archie has till 2024 to get the team built because he gets a free pass working with his roster made up of kids pulled off the upstairs courts at the HPER building.

Lol.....the only one looking dense right now is you. Coach K would not have this team in a better spot right now, neither would Coach Knight. You have to deal with the reality of the situation and act accordingly. Right now you are just throwing a hissy fit because you cannot get your way.

I’m going to give Miller more than 8 games......

And the HPER has a upstairs now? Really?

Sure. I get that but some of you dopes are advocating a free pass for 2+ seasons. Ludicrous. I tried to tell you that after Duke the other night when many of you started up with all the posts about the NCAA tourney. He needs to show improvement. Period. This isn't a roster anywhere close to the first 3 Crean years. You surely don't think that, right?

What do you consider a free pass? I would say his job security should not come in doubt for at least 4 years. If it is just about criticizing him then people have already done that.

The HPER has always had an upstairs...with real courts too! Looks like they use it for fencing now. In the old days, there was so much demand for court time, we had the overflow games upstairs.

A free pass, as many of these posters are advocating, equates to showing very little improvement with the program until all of the Crean recruits are gone. I don't buy that he needs a team completely made of his own recruits to show something. This team is not completely devoid of talent, and if Archie is what I think he is, he'll get rid of many of these bad habits by season's end. A coach worth his salt can take the hand he is dealt and improve it. Not necessarily after 8 games but definitely by season's end they should be playing to their potential.
Now, their potential may not be great but it's got to be better than the turd dropped out there today.

If you haven't seen improvement from this team from game 1 you either don't know what to look for or you just like to complain.

Some improvement. But today felt eerily like watching so many of Crean's teams, Scott. Did not expect a win today but expected a better showing. 1 step forward and 3 steps back. Suspect we'll see a lot of that this season.
I really think Archie will succeed here and I'm not complaining about him but to suggest IU fans have a 4 year break-in period is laughable. This isn't some first time HC we hired here learning on the job like Davis.

1 step forward and 3 steps back? So you think the team is worse than they were at the beginning of the season.

I cannot conclusively say we are heads and shoulders better than Game 1, no. Some of the same disinterest by the team was there today.

Saying "1 step forward and 3 steps back" isn't the same as saying you "cannot conclusively say we are heads and shoulders better than Game 1." It's literally saying that the team has regressed (gotten worse) since game 1. Is that what you think or was that just not well thought out hyperbole?

Maybe not well thought out. I was trying capture the comparison coming out of the Duke game and then today. My post was in reference to the last 2 games. Whereas the Duke game felt like progress, today was not better than that or even the same as that game. It was worse, and felt like a regression. I certainly wouldn't call it getting better. Would you?

Ultimately the coach is responsible for getting the team ready to play.

Certainly a regression from the Duke game yet still an improvement from the ISU game. Not a huge improvement but an improvement nonetheless. Of course, it would be extremely hard to not improve from the ISU game since they played so poorly.

Michigan isn't a great team (not even a very good team) but they are better than ISU and this game was in the road. So losing to UM by 14 on the road isn't nearly as bad as losing at home to ISU.

This team will struggle this year. They don't display consistent effort and are pretty poor offensively.

I agree. But with Cream they would have caved earlier and quit. SOFT yes today. But missed a lot of makeable shots.

The Senior guards just aren't very good. Green and Jones are going to have to step up and make some perimeter shots and AL is going to have to be the PG.

I thought it would be a better game as well but you had to know that there was going to be a let down fro the Duke game.

Why a let down? I think IU fans are conditioned to believe that stuff after 9 years of Crean. That isn't normal to see such disinterest and down nearly 20 right out of the gate. I could see some adjustment. I will acknowledge that we aren't a home and Michigan is not #1. But, teams that are better and tough no matter the situation don't come out with zero intensity.

One these are kids and it happens all the time after a big game. Another thing is that this team is not that good and maybe the Duke game was an aberration. It was the firs conference game and it was also on the road.

I’m not sure that’s the problem. It’s not complicated . They’re bad

It takes zero talent to hustle and play hard. We may have bad basketball players, which would mean that recruiting services across the entire country missed badly on every single guy, but it's past time to accept that guys not playing hard is somehow okay. This "kids," the "road" and the "conference" are all factors that every team in the country deals with. Somehow, we've gotten it twisted up to think all of those things you mention are valid excuses for playing so poorly. I'm not talking about winning the game necessarily but acting like we give a hoot.

I did not think today ha anything to do with not playing hard. They got down early and fought back to cut it to 39-34 and if they were not playing hard that would never had happened.

You are correct. There were spurts like that. I guess my concern has to do more with being completely out of it at the start of the game. I don't quite understand how a team is that mentally unprepared.

This year will be long year still. IU's incoming freshman will have a good chance to start next year. I think that Phinisee and Anderson come in with a scoring mentality and confidence that none on this team have. Hunter will start from day 1. Next year will be 4th or 5th in Big and then we will see how consistent IU can stay at top.
