Besides the transfers from UAB (very excited about these players), what incoming players do people expect contributing next year?

We have a brought in a proven RB and bring back some young depth. It looks like we brought in a good receiver to help an area I was surprised was an issue this year. Our defense made improvement and I am hoping we picked up a player or two that can play right away to continue the improvement.

I am not sure what our QB depth chart will look like, but having Sudfeld back at the top of the chart should allow us a strong start. As we saw this year, we need to have 3 good options.

From KW's press conference yesterday he was very high on Camion Patrick the JUCO WR. He had high praise for him and compared him to Latimer. Said he might even be more athletic than Cody.

We Have Some Redshirts From Last Year Too

Tommy Mister will play this year - somewhere.
Delroy Baker will get in the OL mix
Tim Gardner can play OL now.
Sykes will join the LB rotation.
Dawkins and Zeke Walker will both join the safety rotation.

We are at a point - FINALLY - where our 2's and 3's can play without us losing a lot.
Lynch never got there.
Hep never had that.
DiNardo didn't have that.
Cam didn't have that.

Especially on offense (although the WR is still a "prove it" spot).

Our DL is solid.
Our Bandit is solid - with several LB's who step in there in if/when needed.
Our LB corps has me excited.

If we "fix" the corners and the WR's live up to expectation, we're gonna be tough.
We have huge pack or WR's to pick from. Having Hawkins here for Spring ball will be a great thing.

I'm wishing Brown and Green could be so good they'd start immediately, but I know better, so I'm hoping Mullen, Clark, Fant, Padmore and Smith can be improve and be good enough that Brown and Green can redshirt. At 6'2" Green could be a monster. We have the speed in that group, but SOMEBODY in that group needs to find the light and become a lock down guy.

Willis might be the stand up backer....

they almost put him in there last year. So add him.

Spot on MTIOTF....as far as the incoming recruits look for Westbrook,

Hawkins and Patrick to fight for starting wr positions. Booth will be vastly improved, stronger and in the mix but lookout for these newcomers. In today's Bloomington Herald Times, KW said that Patrick is "dynamic, a high end BIG player.....more fluid than Cody Latimer". There will be some additional surprises I would think. Possibly look for Tyler Green to get a lot of playing time on the corner and look for Jonathan Crawford to be somewhere on the field. Really nice looking group---is this the class that gets us over the hump?

Good to hear

I have learned to temper my enthusiasm as I have been excited in past years. I am getting that feeling of optimism again. Al year I was excited to watch Coleman play, but sad we would have such a loss when he left. Picking up Howard was the single biggest pick up that would impact the team that I can remember. It raised my hopes before I saw where our class ranked in the B1G.

Curious if any WR could move to a corner. Hopefully we don't need to do that. I hope the team sees the potential and believes they are going to play 13 this year.

Anyone else worried about a repeat performance

at QB?

If Nate goes down, will IU be in a much improved position at QB vs this year or just slightly better off?

I hope for the former and fear the latter.

Really like the two CBs we signed

Their senior highlights are really impressive. Brown and Green seem to be better athletes than anything we have now at the CB position with the exception of Fant. Green might have a difficult time because he's so tall that it's difficult for him to sink his hips and change direction quickly enough, but he makes up for it with his speed and explosiveness. Not sure how that will translate against a really good WR. OSU message boards indicated from camp sessions he has a ton of potential but had a difficult time in man coverage. They were thinking he would fill out and play a potential hybrid S/OLB role that manned up on TEs. Interesting thought. Really like Brown though. I think Brown is able to break and get out of it a little quicker than Green but they both remind me of Bennett's explosiveness when coming out of their break.

Re: Good to hear

Funny you bring that question up. Simme Cobbs was originally a Puke verbal but flipped to IU. Purdue had him ear marked for the defensive backfield. Yeah I don't understand that either. You may have noticed I did not bring his name up along side of Booth. I am at a loss to where Cobbs now fits into the overall picture.

Cobbs, has great potential. The best of the returning freshman.

If he pushes himself, he could be really special. The big question is does he have the drive.

Only Simmie knows that answer. Won't disagree...a 6'4" receiver in the mix

would be another fantastic target. I watched him last year, started more pushing and shoving matches than had caught balls.

True, he had drops.....but consistently got open/separation....

now that doesn't help if you don't catch it, but I think he is the most physically gifted WR on the roster, let's see if he makes that work.

I'd like to see IU move Mangieri down to replace Richardson....

IU has several LBs that can play, and they could use Mangieri on the DL, to add some pass rush.

itll be tough if he goes down again BUT

The WR corp is much more solid. Diamont wasn't ready but with zero help at WR/TE he had little chance.

Re: Anyone else worried about a repeat performance

I think we have to be better - for the mere fact that (if all goes according to plan), the guy that started our last 4 games or so will go into the season as the #4 QB.

Sudfeld
Covington/King
Diamont

We have no idea how good/bad Covington would have been but since he was above Diamont (and a true freshman, too), you would think would have had better results. Plus you add the extra year they both will have, that has to be an advantage. And we have several other guys that played QB in high school, so who knows if we have a better alternative if 2 or 3 guys go down.

It's A Tough Schedule, But Doable

SIU - If we can't beat SIU, I may become an Alabama fan.

FIU - it's a step up, but FIU has been struggling to win in the Sun Belt.

Western Ky. - Scares me a lot. Maybe because I'm too familiar. Their QB and main RB are excellent. Their defense struggled, but the DC was Petrino's choice for UofL and elected to stay at Western and coach his sons. They will be better this year. We need to be in "well-oiled" mode before this game.

at Wake - road game. ACC. Time to see if the Wake rebuild is getting traction. To get 8, its a big game.

Ahia State - at least we get 'em at home, but we won't be surprising them.

at PSU - we have (oddly) usually played Penn State tough. I don't think they are "well" yet. They will be young. Franklin is enthusiastic, but - IMO - still unproven. Win this one and we're looking at a great season.

Rutgers - I gotta admit they surprised me last year, Home game. If we're "fixed" its winnable. If we're not, we'll know by now.

at MSU - I have said for years that Dantonio is the best coach in our league. If we're rolling, this game will have HUGE ramifications. We could be a spoiler or a contender. MSU is tough as nails. We'll need our best game ever (under Wilson) to win.

Iowa - I have been expecting Iowa to fold for 3 seasons, and they haven't. Ferentz keep finding just enough tough kids to stay near the top of the middle of the pack. Again, if we're fixed, winnable. If not, we'll need to win this to save the season.

Michigan - I expect them be worse than last year, mired in the middle of complete change, with a raving Harbaugh hurting everybody's feewings. Either way, if WE are good, this will be a huge game. If we are OK, this may be for bowl eligibility. If we are not, I'll be watching with the loyal 19.

at Maryland - we took de're playas! Edsall will want to stomp us. If we're out of it, could be ugly. If we're good, this could be a war. I may pick this as my road trip for the year.

at Purdue - POTFB.

I can argue for 5 wins. I can argue for 10. After the Spring Game, I'll probably argue for 12.

1. Improve the secondary.
2. Improve the passing.
3. Improve clock management.
4. Keep the Bucket.

I'm all in.

You forgot . . .

"improve punting".

IMO that was the difference in having a real shot at winning vs. O$U and getting beat by 14.

Re: It's A Tough Schedule, But Doable

I'm with you, need to take it one game at a time but could be a very good season. Hopefully we can get out of the gate hot and get the fans behind it. Can't wait, September is so far away.

Re: Anyone else worried about a repeat performance

I like your thoughts. Something else to take into account is that our staff has learned a few things about better preparing for worst case scenarios. Wilson said that Covington is healing well and will get plenty of spring reps. Let's all remember that Covington had been preparing through summer workouts to compete for a DB spot, not QB. Gearing up for an entire off-season as the back-up QB will get him vastly more prepared. Also, Coach said that they plan to feed as much as possible to Austin King to get him ready. I am still concerned, but the staff will be dialed in with contingency preparations.

A lot depends on how healthy we stay

a few too many serious injuries and we won't go too far

Good thoughts

I felt the same about the staff not having envisioned a disaster at a particular position, and I join you in feeling that they will have planned for that by the time fall rolls around. As far as Zander's performance goes, he should get a lot of credit for that against Purdue and I hope that he can build on that as a QB and get bigger physically as a player. Still, whether him or Covington, there is a ways to go.

Re: We Have Some Redshirts From Last Year Too

You guys have me really pumped up for IU football.Ordered my season tickets yesterday. Have had tickets for thirty years. We always take a bottle of champagne to the game. If we win we drink the champagne. If we don't, we give the champagne to a visiting fan and drink more beer. Want to drink more champagne this year. Go Hoosiers! Love Kevin Wilson.

Re: Good thoughts

Diamont has heart and desire. Looked how much he improved when he was thrown to the wolves and how he reacted. Give him some size and we will have a quarterback, maybe not this year but eventually.

Diamont needs some weight and strength added but I think he could contribute if called upon. Valuable experience for him last year. Covington will probably be #2 but if something happened to Sudfeld would not be surprised if King got in there fairly quick. Really liked what I saw on tape with King. Big step up for him so you never know for sure, but he ran an up tempo spread offense in HS and has a good accurate arm from what I saw.

Why would you be at a loss?

He was just a true freshman.
