Matthew McConaughey

Children were slaughtered in his hometown so he may have felt compelled to respond.
Is he the only person ever born in Uvalde? Why is he at a press briefing and not some no name?

It’s because this admistration feels the message is more impactful if it comes from someone in the pictures.

I like him. When I lived in Austin you would see him walk into bars as if he was just any old average Joe. But his opinion on guns and what happened in Uvalde carries no more weight than yours or mine and far less weight than someone who actually holds elected office.

He's debating the issue, you aren't. If he told you it would hurt to shove a red-hot cactus up your ass, would you disregard the truth of that because of the source?
There are already threads debating the issue. What purpose does this thread serve? Idol worship?

Than who should we listen to? Who is willing to address the issue?
Uhm. Aren’t they passing new gun legislation this week? Do you think that’s because mr “alright, alright, alright” went up and gave a heartfelt speech?

Listen to whoever you want. Just don’t act like Hoops original post was any more worthwhile than posting some YouTuber with 5 views, give their opinion on guns.

Actors have one very specific skill, they’re opinion on other matters is not newsworthy. Are you a part of the til tok generation?

Wasn't Reagan an actor? Who is allowed to have an opinion?

Actors make about as much sense as most of our politicians. I don’t listen to any of them. I’m a registered Republican, lean conservative, yet don’t understand why anybody in their right mind needs to own an AR

I think only those that agree with his opinion.

Like it or not, people are more likely to listen to famous people than your average joe
I didn't think someone could find an issue with anybody advocating for a bipartisan effort to do something about school shootings. I also didn't know Ronald Reagan is totally irrelevant regarding politics because he was an actor.

That’s what you don’t seem to understand. I went and watched the video, I don’t even disagree with Matty’s ideas necessarily. Although the talk was mostly platitudes.

When McConaughey becomes president like Trump or Reagan, then I will start taking his celebrity opinion into account. Or even if he runs for office. Until then, he’s entitled to his opinion but it’s just as meaningless as your or mine. Not thread worthy unless you just looking to incite.

Keep up the good work.

People post tweets from Catturd.

Exactly. And props to him for using his platform to actually make an effort toward meaningful change instead of just hashtagging something and feeling good about himself.

People with platforms are listened to, regardless of what they say. And public opinion matters.

This isn’t new. Politicians have leaned on public figures to help get points across for longer than most reading this have been alive.

Like it or not, people with public platforms can impact policy and voting.

Why do you think Trump brought Bob Knight on stage while campaigning in Indiana?

It is great marketing and the use of recognizable faces can easily sway those who really have difficulty thinking for themselves. The, if McConaughey thinks it should be so should I or if Knight likes him then hell I do too mentality, plays on the uneducated or uninformed and that is dangerous.

I don't blame anti-gun or pro gun law advocates using McConaughey it is smart business, business use things/people all the time to get additional customer or in this case advocates. I don't think it will work just as I don't think there will be any radical gun laws or banning of any guns anytime in the near future. If anything this probably caused the pro-gun contingent to go out and arm up even further.

That's very unfortunate as they tend to be uneducated, inexperienced in the field, removed from reality, yet get a platform to bleat their strong opinions. More of the dumbing down of society listening to celebs and athletes. Hell we got Trump

Rank these things to make kids/schools safer quickest:

Physical structure/safety measures of school buildings
Physical presence of trained safety officers at schools
Mental health identification/treatment of psychos
Gun laws

He is articulate, though, and charasmatic. People pay attention to him, like it or not. I am glad that he is leveraging that for good.
Well I've followed him a bit and he's got a lot of mitigating factors. He doesn't produce the gag reflex of a Steve Kerr or so many of the Hollywood types. He's a Texan. This town was his hometown. Oil is in his blood. He's a graduate of UT. Good public university. His brother's the Rooster. Another oil man. He's spent time with both the Rooster and Wayne Butch Gilliam out in West Texas around pipefitters, and oil men, hardscrabble men who've never even heard of paternity leave. He refers to the far left as the illiberal left and chastises them for being patronizing, condescending, and arrogant to the other 50%. He thinks Republicans are mental for believing the election was stolen. He recognizes fake news and that we are being fed fake news. He's an MLS owner. Not a fan of the entitlement of thinking he should stand before the White House lectern and talk but he's not a total vapid, partisan celebrity/athlete hack.

Deal breaker.

He has common sense - or as much as a pretty boy model/actor can.

Had enough sense to pull his family out of Hollywood and raise em on a Texas ranch
