Based on what we actually KNOW, it seems Dolson is doing the right things. He weighed his options on Archie, determined he needed to go and found a way to fund it privately. He thought through what he is looking for as a replacement, and likely had some good ideas of who he wanted to target.

But most importantly, he took the responsibility of making the hire himself. To me, that’s what I want to see. Regardless of who he hires, I’m going to support it believe he knows what he is doing. I will give them a fair opportunity to bring us back to prominence, and I hope everyone else does the same.

There is all kinds of speculation beyond that, so getting all worked up about timing, Dolson’s approach, how great or terrible Brad Stevens is and all that other crap is just that. Crap.

Dolson is clearly attempting to keep things quite, and minimizing those involved. IMO that’s the best way to do this. So if you just like having fun talking about it great, but people are getting pretty nasty and I just don’t get it.

My issue isn’t Dolson. My issue is that our program is a laughingstock that most coaches probably aren’t interested in.

clearing the buy out and transition were two mighty steep mountains to climb. Think about it....Crean left IU in a bind financially, and likely why Archie was here. He was well paid, but IU can match the bigger competitors if need be for the right guy. He was a yellow tag lawn mower at Lowes....returned and marked down....take your chances. We did....

IU has the bank roll, and frankly, all the time in the world. I say use it. The fingernail biters can pound sound. IU has to get this right. I think Dolson knows that full well. Pressure is an illusion. Get this right. Recruiting is a secondary consideration, not the most important one. With the right coach, the stars will align themselves.

No matter who is hired, I’m more excited today about the prospects of IU “getting good again” than I have been in a while.

Dolson had a lot of legitimate reasons, or excuses, depending on your point of view, to not fire Archie. The fact that he did so, in spite of all of them, tells me he cares very deeply about IU “getting good again”. I think all ADs in the past have cared to a certain extent. I think Dolson is one of the few that was willing to put his job and reputation on the line.

That’s pretty cool.

excellent post--no one can say otherwise

Wouldn't call it a laughingstock but we have to accept that the task at hand is extremely challenging. The program has been stuck in the mud for the better part of 2+ decades, and the incoming coach knows that there is a substantial portion of the fanbase who will expect the new hire to turn the franchise back to its circa-1992 days within the first 2-3 yrs.

If you're sitting in Beard's seat right now, or Drew's seat, or on top of massive NBA contracts like Donavan or the Masshole wonderboy.....do you really want to walk away from what you presently have, and take on such a task? The fan base has turned on every coach hired since RMK was dismissed (albeit Sampson turned on himself and the admin had no choice).

And I hope I'm not proven right with my next statement, but I don't think coaching lightweights like Calbert, Fife, Lewis are up to the present task at hand (all due respect to these former IU warriors).

We'll see if anything actually happens this week. After last week's noise, and my own foolish decision to go against my instincts of believing the Stevens' rumors (after yrs of accepting his ship already sailed), I'm not getting to stoked up over any twitter stories concerning new hires.

We’ve certainly been a train wreck for a while, but I don’t agree that most coaches aren’t interested. For starters, any coach worth a drop of consideration is going to have enough self confidence to believe they can turn it around. They would also see what a mega hero and high profile coach they would then become. I live in Texas and while it seems like there are hoops programs on the rise everywhere here, IU is still on network TV here more than any of them. That kind of exposure is valuable.

Plus we’ll pay pretty well, which dosen’t hurt.

Agree. It can take time to find that right fit. I have interviewed people I just KNEW would be good. Then after the actual interview, I had already changed my mind. The complete opposite has also happened. It’s a process and you can never predict just how it will work out. This is a big hire and I really hope we get the right person

Good post. I fell for all the hype on Stevens, but I think we all did. The fan base is desperate for hope. The program is a sleeping giant, and for 48 hours, it was like we could envision success for the first time in two decades.

Dolson has made a good early impression. I like the due diligence and not jumping on the next hot name. He gets it from all levels, and has at least earned his shot.

This is perhaps the most encouraging aspect of all this. It was said by multiple coaches, that the reason for Butler’s success over the years was because of Barry Collier. He instilled the leadership that built and maintained that culture of winning. Barry is a Butler guy, Scott is an IU guy. I hope the parallels bode well.

So maybe it isn’t the program who is the laughing stock but some of our ridiculous fans???

Give me a morning cocktail of Prozac, Miralax and Viagra and I'm a happy guy.

Well that's why I'm trying not to get too far ahead with expectations for next season. A new coach, a new offensive system, several new faces.....typically does not translate to a top 15 team next February. If CMW can land at least one more home run transfer...or maybe 2 decent transfers (wing shooter and another big to replace Brunk), then I might expect more. Besides...it's only mid April....been on here debating IU ball all winter and the season doesn't begin for 6+ months...I could use some down time fishing out of my kayak.
