Look who's #1 for quality losses. Every so often you see threads about...

IU's historical losing record being one of the worst in the country, but our B1G schedule never seems to be taken into account. A lot of schools would have worst historical records had they played tOSU, UM, MSU, PSU, Iowa, etc. year after year.

It's no secret that we have a very challenging schedule and play in the toughest division in college football. It's also no secret that, for many years, the Big Ten was essentially the Big Two and Little Eight and the conference, top to bottom, was not particularly impressive. Our poor historical record long predates the current Big Ten division alignment and, in my view, relates much more to the historical management (or, more precisely, mismanagement) of the program than schedules.

That said, the past is the past and there's little doubt in my mind that we've turned the corner. Recruiting is up, facilities are first class, we're playing defense for the first time in 20 years, we're competitive in almost every game, and there's buzz around IU football. The wins will start coming this year - - my crystal ball shows seven. Can't wait for September 1 - - five weeks from today!

Thank you, Bowlmania! For years, I've been citing historic mismanagement as the primary reason for the program's struggles. I've felt like a lonely voice in the wilderness -- until YOU came along!

I was in the stands on a rainy, cold Sep. 30, 1978 when we lost to Nebraska 69-17. Yeah. That was Fred Glass' fault.
I was too with my friends and my banner. Watched I M Hipp and the Huskers run over us. Game was over in the 1st qtr. but we sat through it all in the rain

I was there as well. Pretty sure IU was 2-0, feeling optimistic and it was a National game for ABC. It was a “want to believe it’s a breakthrough” game way before Coach Allen. Also think the great LB Stormin Joe Norman was playing.

It was cold, wet and IM Hipp rolled over the defense like a hot knife thru butter and it was an awful drubbing.

But I love what Coach Allen is doing now. Key starts with IU playing such better defense then they ever did, and definitely better athletes/players on the team than in the past too. I’m bullish on at least a return to a bowl game this year, and wouldn’t be shocked if got a few big wins like MSU or Iowa too.

I was there as well.....went with a friend who had bought a nice new IU cap for the game. He walked out when it got to 28-7 and threw his cap down into the stands as far as he could. That was funny as hell but the game was miserable. Like you I stayed around, but the whole game was miserable. One of the worst IU games ever.

Money certainly hasn’t made the IU administration any more competent.

The deck was stacked against Glass from the start. IU's reputation, facilities, and not being in a strong recruiting area and surrounded by blue bloods on 2 sides didn't help. There have been a few self inflicted wounds along the way. Its been a deep hole to climb out of but I think we are making progress. Do you not think so?

Lynch was 5-7 in his final season at IU. Two Glass hires later, IU is still 5-7. Now maybe we are more competitive, and only lose to Wisconsin by 28 instead of 63, but the record is the same.

Well the differences between then and now should be obvious so I won't restate them. If we go 8-4 this year would you be willing to build a shrine to Glass in your front yard? I'm not going to look at one year and make a decision based on that. IMO the trend is our friend.

And how do you propose he fixes it?
Well, we might have. Have an athletic department that can complete financially with Meatchicken, O$U, P$U, et al and hire people who either understand how to successfully manage a college football program or will surround himself/herself with people who do and then will get out of their way.

IU was 1-1 entering that game having had a loss in the season opener at LSU. On a side note, did you know that same Nebraska team got to play fellow Big 8 opponent Oklahoma in the Orange Bowl that season, even though they had already played? Can't remember that happening before or since. They ended up splitting, with Oklahoma winning the bowl game.

This IM Hipp game is the most rehashed bullshit on this board. I was only two or three years old, it's 40 years ago, people!!

Quit bringing this game up, it really does seem to pop up every 6 months. Furthermore, it only goes to show how retarded the Indiana administration was by scheduling Nebraska, LSU, Southern California, Washington and of course annually playing Kentucky.

GD, no wonder Corso struggled to win 6 games.

Sorry to offend, td, but my original point was that not everything can be Fred Glass' fault and that example from my life leaped to mind.

Lynch was playing the cards he was dealt. He started out his last season with victories over 1-10 Towson State, 2-10 Western Kentucky and 1-11 Akron. Later came a 4th win over 4-8 Arkansas State and then there was the Bucket win over a 4-8 Purdue squad.

But as Rocky Balboa ”they don’t remember you - they remember the rep”. ;)

We’ve been saying IF for Fred’s entire 10 years. In both sports. Simple question....how long is long enough? 15 years? 20 years?

I would say he gets at least 3 more. We have coaches with 1 year under their belt in the big 2 sports. The baseball hire looks like it could be a homerun. Really things are looking good at the moment. He went out on a limb with Allen so we shall see how that works out.

That’s what everyone said about Tom Crean too and neither is remotely true.
The circumstances (Crean's and Glass's) aren't remotely similar. Completely different responsibilities, reporting lines and performance metrics.

The only people who said that were the ones that said Glass would never fire him.
Exactly. And eventually the BoT stepped in and fixed Fred’s mess. The same will happen again soon unless Archie and Allen are both home runs.
