Ashley led off and grounded out to third base. Next up to bat, Richardson drew a one-out walk. Barr then struck out looking but Toetz singled to right field and Richardson moved to second base. Fougerousse struck out swinging to end the frame.

B1:

Northwestern strands two runners on base and one in scoring position.

A pitch hit Calarco to put the leadoff man on first base and then Goosenberg flied out to the warning track in deep right field. Hrustrich drew a walk to put runners on first and second. Trautwein then struck out looking on a curveball and Dunn grounded out to third base. Dunn hit a high chopper and Barr charged the ball, caught it bare-handed and fired to first for the out. Great defensive play.

Colopy grounded out to shortstop and then Van Pelt singled to left field. Next up to bat, Hopkins popped out to shortstop and Espalin grounded out to second base to end the frame.

Northwestern takes a 3-0 lead.

Bianchina hit a leadoff solo home run to right-center. Minarovic then bunted to the pitcher and was thrown out at first base. O'Donnell struck out swinging, but Kaplan reached on a fielding error by IU SS Espalin. Next up to bat, Calarco doubled to the right-center gap and Kaplan scored to make it a 2-0 game. Goosenberg also doubled to right-center and Calarco scored to give NU a 3-0 lead. Hrustich struck out looking to end the frame.

Ashley struck out swinging and then Richardson flied out to center field. Barr drew a two-out walk but was thrown out trying to move to second after Toetz hit a ground ball to shortstop. NU SS Goosenberg flipped to NU 2B Bianchina for the out.

Trautwein struck out looking and then Dunn flied out to deep right field right in front of the warning track. Bianchina then hit a ball over the right-center field fence for a solo home run to give Northwestern a 4-0 lead. Minarovic struck out looking to end the inning.

Is this fence like 260 feet? Every fly ball looks like it’s going out. Little second baseman with 2 jacks? To quote our feeble leader, “come on man!”
 
T4:

Indiana cuts the lead to 4-2.

Fougerousse hit a leadoff single to right field but was thrown out trying to move to second base after Colopy hit a ground ball to third. Colopy reached on the fielder's choice. As Gary Cohen of SNY would say, "That ball is outta here! Outta here!" Van Pelt hit a two-run home run to right field to cut the deficit to 4-2. Hopkins then flied out to right-center and Espalin fouled out to third base to end the frame.

Indiana ties the game 4-4.

Ashley drew a leadoff walk but was thrown out trying to move to second after Richardson hit a ground ball to NU SS Goosenberg. Goosenberg flipped to NU 2B Bianchina for the force out at second, but Richardson was safe at first and reached on the fielder's choice. Cole Barr then hit a two-run home run to left field to tie the game 4-4. Toetz grounded out to shortstop and Fougerousse drew a two-out walk. Colopy then struck out swinging to end the frame.

B5: Mid-Inning Update


Hrustich lined out to shortstop and then a pitch hit Trautwein. Trautwein advanced to second base on a wild pitch. Dunn then drew a one-out walk. It looked like he went around on the replay, but the umpire said he held and, therefore, was granted first base.

RHP Braydon Tucker replaced RHP McCade Brown.
 
B5:

Bianchina grounded into a 4-6-3 inning-ending double play.

Espalin popped out to NU 1B Calarco, but Ashley singled to left field and Van Pelt scored from third base to give Indiana a 5-4 lead.

B8: Mid-Inning Update

Northwestern regains the lead 6-5.

Dunn hit a leadoff single through the right side and moved to second after Bianchina singled to right field. Minarovic then laid down a sacrifice bunt to the pitcher and was thrown out at first base. Dunn and Bianchina moved to second and third base, respectively. O'Donnell then singled through the right side and both Dunn and Bianchina scored to make it a 6-5 game. Kaplan then singled to center field to put runners on first and second.

RHP John Modugno replaced RHP Braydon Tucker
 
B8:

Calarco singled to center field and O'Donnell scored to extend the lead to 7-5. Kaplan advanced to third on the single and Calarco moved to second on the throw home. Kaplan then scored on a passed ball to extend the lead to 8-5 and Calarco went to third base. Goosenberg and Hrustich both struck out swinging to end the inning.

Indiana needs to score at least three runs.

Indiana goes down in order.

Barr struck out swinging, Toetz grounded out to second and Fougerousse flied out to the warning track in deep right field.

Indiana loses 8-5 and drops the second game of the three-game series. Tough loss.
 
No ifs, ands, or buts, we fell apart in more ways than one in that 8th inning. Well, if we can take the rubber match tomorrow, it will still be a successful weekend.

Well, we are going to lose some ground to the conference leaders in Neb and Mich, who are both on their way to sweeping a couple of the conference bottom dwellers. That makes taking the series tomorrow even more important since we don't want to drop farther back in the standings, especially with no conference tournament at the end of the season.
