Goosenberg hit a leadoff double to left field that bounced off the wall for the first Northwestern hit of the game. Goosenberg advanced to third on a wild pitch. Hrustich then struck out swinging and Trautwein drew a one-out walk. Dunn then struck out swinging and Bianchina hit a ground ball to IU SS Espalin, who threw to second base. Toetz initially dropped the ball but picked it up with his foot still on the bag for the force out at second.

Sommer is having a great game. He is at 69 pitches through 6 innings which is a little over 11 pitches an inning. Can't ask for anything better. I still would feel better if we could add to the 2-0 lead.

Dunn drew a leadoff walk and then moved to second after Minarovic singled up the middle with one out. O'Donnel then singled to right field to load up the bases. Kaplan hit a ground ball to third base but beat the throw at first base. All runners advanced one base and Dunn scored to make it a 5-1 game. Calarco then singled up the middle and all runners moved up one base. Minarovic scored to cut Indiana's lead to 5-2.

We were cruising until the bottom of the 7th and had to hang on for dear life. NW relies on the long ball and we neutralized that part of their game, but those singles just about did us in. It's still a good win to open the series.

Thanks for your accurate and informative updates. One small suggestion: in baseball, when a batter hits a fly ball for an out, he "flied" out, not "flew" out. I know it's not that way in the dictionary, but "flied" is standard baseball jargon.
