Very true. If a guy has many deflections but keeps letting his man get by him and is not paying attention to where his man is compared to where the ball and basket are then deflections do not mean as much.

Here's a hint - a shot clock violation gives every player on the floor one deflection. That's five deflections on one play dorks and not one tipped pass. Taking a charge is a deflection. A steal is a deflection. Causing a picked up dribble is a deflection. Winning a 50/50 ball while on defense is also a deflection as is a blocked shot. Some coaches even count a defensive rebound as a deflection. Some coaches give two points for certain areas .. be it charges, steals, blocks.
Every coach counts deflections or has a similar manner of gauging defensive involvement which is what deflections track, including ours. They also track them differently having different point values, depending on what the focus of the defense is. They just don't go on TV waving a piece of paper like a raving orange mad man or act like it's the magic wand +5 of winning .. .

That's not Tom Crean's definition he didn't invent the stat, it's Hubie Brown's, who did invent the stat while at New York and where Pitino picked it up and gave it to the world. It is tracked by every pro coach, and every college coach in varying degrees and methods and taken most seriously by pressing teams.

This turned into a strange thread. I would like to inform the original poster that Tom Crean still sucks.
I never said I was a basketball guru. I was responding to the board’s child poster who said I’ve never played or been around a coach in my life.
I didn’t play in college but I played throughout high school. And I doubt anyone on this board was as close to IU’s (or any other big time) program as I once was. Back when we were actually elite. I’ve seen and heard things that most here haven’t. And I’ve spent countless hours with one of the best basketball minds to ever walk this Earth long before most on here were ever born.
Is this why you are so cranky? You've had to deal with countless coaches, players, and administrations ?
