Lander to Western Kentucky

Watching our transfers go to places like Western Kentucky, University of Central Florida, UT-Martin, and Cincinnati really demonstrates how poor our recruiting has been over the years. Glad Woody is doing well.

I'm rooting really hard for him. I think that is a good place for him to go and gain the main things he has lacked, playing time and confidence. If he gets both of those, I can see him being on the move again to a big program.

ha Yes, getting the #1 PG in the class over every top program fighting for him proves our inability to recruit. It's surely an exact science.

I'd be more concerned if they WERE going to North Carolina, Kentucky and Duke as that would mean its our starters leaving. Every program at the bottom is losing players to top programs and programs at the top are losing players to lower tiered programs.

Ranking is one thing, ability is another. At the end of the day, Archie didn't excel at evaluating or developing players.

Yes, losing our best players would obviously be more concerning. Figured at least one of the four would have a better landing than where they signed.

I'll always remember last year when NBAdraft.net had him as a 1st rounder in the 2021 draft. Good luck KL!

Correct and its a perfert fit for him as he was never a five star or even close to it.

I don't know, it's kind of the underbelly of the transfer portal. Unload the recruiting misses to get better. IU seems to have done pretty well with it so far.

Good Luck to Khristian Lander.
With that said, I'm excited to see the high level talent on the IU roster for next year and going forward. IU doesn't just play to be good. IU plays to win National Championships. Win Banner #6. Go IU!

I had the same thought. How do you miss that bad?
I don’t mean to blame coaches or scouts, I just mean how do you judge a guy to be power 5 and he is more mid level conference?
I was comparing him to Delray Brookes

Yeah they do. And they do a good job at it

He always seemed like such a great teammate... Was rooting hard for him to succeed at IU but he clearly just didn't fit or have the talent to be competitive in the B1G. Not sure if the above statement about recruiting is true or if Archie's coaching was just that bad that he turned high level D1 players into mid major transfers... CAM's legacy at IU is about 5 steps below Coach Watson

CAM's tenure at IU makes the CTC period look like glory years. Still baffles the mind how miserably CAM failed at IU...and how miserable he looked here during it all. 4 lost years that cannot be forgotten quickly enough.

I'm still bewildered as to how Lander got rated as a 5-star. Five games into his career made it clear to me that he was in over his head. If CAM and staff initiated the reclassification idea, that is probably the most egregious mistake of CAM's tenure. Lander looked like a HSer playing against 19-22 year olds.

That said, I do wish the young man well and hope that Western Kentucky is a great fit for him.

I’m still wondering how much of a role the pandemic played.

I remember after Saban won a NC he mentioned that the biggest differentiating factor for their team was managing the pandemic. No doubt Miller seemed not happy, and there was a cloud over the entire team. OTOH, we saw mental health issues, depression , etc. skyrocketing.

I’m not suggesting that he is a great coach, but it’s possible he’s a decent coach that did a horrible job managing the pandemic.

we lost those first 2 games. in year 1...by 20 pts each, at home, to mid majors including Indiana State....long before Covid. Covid didn't help, but it was never going to work. CAM was just a bad fit for the program. My belief is that the IU job is such a pressure cooker, high profile gig, that low-key guys like CMD and CAM are eventually going to get chewed up and spat out. The job was a very bad fit for CAM's personality.

I think CAM is a good Xs and Os coach but as Chi-bound Hoosier stated, the IU job was too big for him. I wonder if he would have recruited a reclassified Lander if Lander was from Evansville, IL instead of Evansville, IN.

And the following year we lost 12/13 in conference (also pre-Covid). He lost that team, for sure.

ok, scratch my earlier response.

Maybe KL is being enticed by a NIL deal that includes a new Corvette? Never mind I was just finishing my 3rd Manhattan.

Nah, Archie and the assistants he hired were easily one of the worst staffs in the B1G

One thing NIL will do is teach valuable life lessons. I talked to lander a few times and once you were around him he turned into a very open person, but man he screamed of youth. Just a kid for sure. Nothing like Parker or X for example.

Lander thought, and I’m sure still thinks, he is a superstar. Hell, that isn’t his fault. Him and Romeo both were treated like gods in southern Indiana. In both cases, it killed their career.

the drive and “chip on the shoulder” has to be there if you want to get to the highest level. Talent only gets you so far and we saw exactly where it got both Romeo and lander.

Now lander just saw race get 150k and he is transfering to wku where he will have a free glasses deal. That reality will hit like a ton of bricks. Hope it creates a chip on that shoulder and he starts working.
