It's still with us.

It's a good recruiting tool although I'd imagine other schools have followed our lead by now...

The athlete who it really protects is the one who's been injured and can no longer produce at his or her prior level, at which point, many coaches across the country simply pull their scholarships citing pretty much any reason other than injury (and this cold hearted practice has gone on for decades due to scholarship limitations).
