Kick the FG!

Wilson explained it on the post game that "kicking the field goal really doesn't do anything for you there because 2 touchdowns puts them up." He then said something about teaching the kids to be aggressive, keep coming and not worry about the scoreboard.

You go up by 13 and you FORCE them to score 2 touchdowns to beat you. A touchdown and a field goal would have tied us with around 7 minutes left.

His unwise decision was then explained by Wilson with tortured logic. At least he's consistent.

I'm just curious. If IU makes those first downs, do you still come on here and comment about how stupid the decision was? Or are you just wanting to state the obvious because you know the decision was "unorthodox"? I frankly love to see a team take chances, be unpredictable and not do things according to some ubiquitous coaching logic. Let's let this play out and see if CKW can mold these young, talented players into a team we all love to watch.

The first-half one I definitely would have taken the three points, but in the fourth quarter going against that offense, I could see us wanting to get the two-touchdown cushion. I am 99 percent in favor of taking the three points when presented with anything more than 4th and 1.

If I were going to go for it on fourth down, I would do it more in situations on the other team's 40-45, where it's too long for a field goal but not worth a punt unless you get the ball inside the 5. I don't have a problem with going on fourth down with this offense, but I look at a game as putting points in the bank. Getting three points is naturally always better than none, because it creates different scenarios as the game wears on.

It's too risky and completely unnecessary whether it works or not.

I agree with not kicking drives me nuts but it isn't a guaranteed 3 all the time. But he said something about the players are now used to how crazy his decisions are? He is trying to teach some resiliency. I didn't think they would stop the 2 pointer against SIU, There were definitely times in the next two games IU could have buckled. Mental toughness has been an issue over the years. When was the last time IU was down 11 at half and came back to win? 2 interceptions against an NFL prospect QB to turn the game around. That hasn't happened much.

My first reaction was kick the FG to go up 13. Then I was thinking during the TO, that keeps it a two possession game, whereas a TD makes it a three possession game. I then agreed with his decision as the TD would have pretty much iced the game, whereas the FG still keeps it in question (although we all know a 13 point lead is better than a 10).
Regardless, after their TD our offense did a GREAT job killing the final six minutes of the game. Of course, I would have stuck it in rather than take a knee at the end becasue I'm as cold-hearted jerk.....and still bitter about IU teams of the past get pounded again and again.
