I think the UVA game is key to this season. Not to overlook FIU which we beat by only 3 points 2 years ago with a pretty good IU team that lost to an excellent Utah team in our bowl. Nevertheless, I think we can beat FIU. UVA worries me. We beat them last year, but they improved beating Duke, Boise State (in Montana) and Georgia Tech and went to a bowl where they got pounded by Navy. They had other games where they didn't look so good and they lost their QB and some other good players. But they have a good coach in Mendenhall, and will give us a good game.

It's a key game because if we lose to UVA, or FIU for that matter, we will have a tough time with our schedule winning 6 games. We can't afford to lose any of our 3 non-con games or we will be playing from behind from the get go. I would feel a lot better playing Minnesota or Rutgers at home.

By far and away a straw in Coach Allen's hat last year. Mendenhall has been around for years and has had some really good football teams. I did not think IU was going to waltz in and beat UVA like they did with Mendenhall at the helm. A saavy coach for sure and no gimee!

Agreed but one game at a time...

The bowl season against Utah was 2016 and we played FIU down in Miami the opening game and won by a score of 34-13. That year, we crapped the bed at home against Wake Forest 2 weeks later.

Yes, but IU was losing 13-12 vs. FIU n the 4th quarter of that game, till Lagow made a great play on an RPO, and then the D came thru with a couple of picks, including a pick-6 (Tegray Scales)..

Most of the game was a struggle tho.

The defense saved that game. The offense was stagnant most of the game.

I view both the FIU and Virginia game as a test of BOTH mental and physical.

If the team does what too many teams do - and thinks they beat these teams in the last two years so we can/should/will win, we will be unhappy quick.

I wanna see a team on a mission from the opening kick.

"Mental is to physical as 4 is to 1."

I believe you are correct. I got the score off of a college football historical score site which had it 34-31. Didn't remember it being that close. Should have been 34-13.

Mendenhall is on record after their spring game saying something to the effect that they only have 27 ACC caliber players on their roster. FWIW.
